This aged like warm milk!

I like King, but I’m not one that would encourage us to chase him unless he’s going to start rucking for 20 mins or so a game. You need to be involved more to justify the $1.5m price tag (or whatever it costs) and can’t just be a mark and goal player.

He does kick a lot, but he doesn't quite impose himself. In the instance of supply drying up he becomes a fairly unimpressive player

Rather spend the money on Butters/Rowell if either are a chance.

I think he’s far too reliant on the ball coming in on his terms. Now that Brisbane have the matchup and pressure ahead of the ball right I don’t think he’ll get a sniff.

This one will blowout now unless Rowell and Anderson pull one out of the fire.

Likewise. For that sort of cap investment you want a guy that you can be confident is going to impact finals. You could always throw it at Newcombe to keep Hawthorn honest.

Gettable and useful are very different.
Do you think Frampton's useful? He's a way better version of Frampton. Awesome in a contest, but can get done over for positioning by a smart forward if it's not just entering in straight lines.

100% this. I’ve been an advocate for King till now, but he just doesn’t get involved enough in any other facet of the game outside of kicking goals. Yes that’s the number 1 priority for a tall forward, but he needs to be able to get up the ground to prove relief marks from defence, and do the team things, and he just doesn’t seem to be able to add that to his game.

I watched Buller’s highlights

Has anyone seen him play live?
  • leading patterns
  • contested marking
  • making contests
  • ground ball
  • speed / agility
  • get up the ground
  • ruck work
  • football intelligence

All of the above going by the small snippets we've seen. No ground ball ability footage.

I think we've got to stick with basic principles here. He's an exciting prospect with huge upside if we get him and a D grade mid-career journeyman if we don't.

Trouble is, Manic, I think they were also evident in Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls‘ YouTube footage

I want info that’s not highlights related
I trust the club - but I am interested to know how he goes over a whole quarter / game / season

You could watch some Sydney games on YouTube. That would give you a better prospective. He's got strong hands so that's a good start I suppose

If Dimma had his way, I am sure he would trade him for Curnow, he doesn't rate King as highly as others.

Regarding Buller, I like what I saw of him when I watched his games, would be very handy for not much cost.

If we can get Buller and Caminiti for low cost we’ll have done well to help shore up our key position depth for the next few years especially with Howe finishing up after next year. And Checkers and McStay will also be transitioning out over the next 2-3 years

But there’s a ugly tariff on our purchases.

Yes, but we may have to take Petracca if we can get him for a bargain, we still need another midfielder who will help nick, Petracca is perfect assuming we aren't in the Butters race.

But then if we are into Merrett or Butters, you would have to maybe just get Buller and not Caminiti. So much to play to and I think everything hinges on what happens over the next fortnight. Retaining Billy is paramount regardless.

Do we pay 100% of his salary? If so, not sure it’s for us. Would take us out of the running for Butters next year, Rowell year after, let alone any younger stars on the way out or better fits (agree Trac helps but don’t see him as best fit va a Rowell).

I got a theory about our interest in Ben King and maybe JUH.

If we get JUH for a packet of chips this year and we go after Ben King as a FA next year we essentially get two KPP without giving up much draft capital which we don't have much of and may be our only chance.

We will then have two extremely athletic talls who are 197+ and maybe one will be trialled as a potential Darcy Moore replacement.

Just a theory, but wonder what we plan to do post Darcy Moore.

Answers like Frampton, Reef, Cochran and even Caminiti having to do the heavy lifting if Moore goes down doesn't fill me with great confidence. But would love to be wrong.

I think we've got to forget about getting top shelf RFAs for free - particularly from good teams.

We're just really unlikely to be be offering unmatchable contracts. So teams like GC with King will match and trade rather than just accepting pick 15 or whatever as compensation.

Merrett is better than jaicos and contracted and captain. I can’t see them letting him go without asking for a huge return
In the hypothetical were we offered J Daicos for Merrett, they would take it and run. Merritt has no chance of playing in their next finals campaign, while Daicos, being 3-4 years younger, has a chance and should play an extra 60-100 games more than Merrett.
