DC on 400K? Give the man a raise, pies.

“The half-priced Pies; you’re looking at players like Darcy Cameron and Bobby Hill. They’ve been outstanding for Collingwood so far ... What do you think they’re on? They’re on $400-450,000 a year, which is quite remarkable given the value that they’ve given,” McFarlane told Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle on Tuesday night.

“There are a number of clubs, including from Western Australia, who are very keen on these two native Western Australians.

“The Pies are really confident they’ll keep them, they’re very, very confident they can get a deal done, but they’re going to have to pony up with some money.”

Both Cameron and Hill’s current contracts at Collingwood run through to the end of the 2026 season.

The media are relentless at attacking us. Why do we have to pony up with some money when every other club in the league has half priced players but manage to keep them. Glen must be running out of material to come up with ,with this crap

They don't criticise Cats for being able to keep their players on less, or other clubs which have had players take less to keep the team together & because they want to stay at their club..

In fact they applaud those players & clubs for being able to do so.
Saints are throwing money around like lollies and keep getting knocked back 🤣

Yeah always Anti-Collingwood and they love it when we lose

I would not 100% trust what they say

Saints offer Callaghan $17m and he declines lmao, even big money isn’t enough to stagnate your career playing RossBall

We'll have to pay them a fair bit more on their next contract, but both clubs and players take a risk regarding value when they sign a contract. Clubs sometimes don't get close to the value that they're paying in the contract and sometimes players give a heap more value than they get paid. It's just the way it goes. We've got lucky with these 2, but they had very few runs on the board when they were signed. Bobby must have wanted the security of a fourth year when we signed him and we took that risk.

Both players deserve pay rises.

I also wouldn't consider Fox Sports to be above writing articles like that if requested to by a player's manager who's looking to get the best deal for their client.

I’d stay away manic , undoubted talent , his not in a good place and is off the rails with his life enjoyment choices .
He could be the next Jesse Hogan. But he would probably have to move to Qld or NSW to get away from the crazy AFL state environment that is Victoria.

Yeah, unfortunately that's bubbling away in the back of my head. I've heard some worrying things about the lad but who really knows. What a talent though

PIES DUE A PAY RISE

Collingwood’s ‘half-price Pies’ Darcy Cameron and Bobby Hill have attracted plenty of interest from rival AFL clubs, despite both being contracted until the end of next year.

But the Magpies remain confident they can lock in extensions for the star ruckman and enterprising small forward, which would see them rewarded with a big uptake on their current bargain-basement deals of between $400,000 to $450,000.

The pair have been strong pick-ups for the Magpies since arriving at the club, with Cameron considered one of the best ruckmen in the AFL right now and Hill producing a stunning Norm Smith Medal performance in the 2023 grand final.

West Coast is becoming more aggressive in the player acquisition space and has an interest in Cameron, who originally comes from Western Australia, as does Hill.

Collingwood brought in free agent Harry Perryman and traded to secure Dan Houston last October on deals believed to be worth up to $900,000.

Cameron told the Herald Sun this week that he is happy at the Magpies, but will let his manager work through a possible new deal with the club.

TOUGH FOR RIVALS TO LAND ROWELL

Matt Rowell would find it extremely difficult to get to the club of his choice this year given the Suns’ determination to open a premiership window instead of stockpiling more picks.

The Suns are brimming with optimism that Rowell will sign a new contract, but even if he has doubts a two-year deal getting him to free agency would give him the chance to move elsewhere by the end of 2027.

They are not even considering what it would take for a rival club to trade for Rowell, with Essendon, Collingwood, Geelong and the Bulldogs having met the inside mid over summer.

But the Suns already have three first-round picks and would in theory want a top-six player in exchange for a star of Rowell’s quality after 25 Brownlow votes last year.

They have in the past been keen to retain high draft picks given salary cap pressures but signalled their intent this summer by handing over pick six in a deal for Daniel Rioli.

Rowell is less likely to consider Collingwood despite his meeting with the Pies and left his discussions with the Dogs impressed by Luke Beveridge.

But Beveridge is no guarantee to be at the Dogs next year given he hasn’t been offered a new deal.

So a club like Essendon with multiple first-rounders this year would have to satisfy the Suns with one of their A grade talents, which would off-set the benefits of securing Rowell.

I think the chances of us landing Rowell are pretty small because of our draft capital - maybe the best thing for us is if he decides to stays at GCS or if does he moves to Essendon so we can pick off one of GCS/Essendon's young developing mids.

Kind of feel the same way with LDU, if he doesn't choose us and moves maybe we can get someone who is on the periphery.

Do people think we have hit a point with the list build where we may need to trade one or two good players in order to set up for the future?

It's no secret that we have the oldest list in the competition and that some of our more decorated players are nearly at the end. With this in mind, whether we challenge this season or not is unlikely to change the fact that we will need to refresh the list.

As painful as it may be, is the time right at season's end to trade one or two who otherwise might not have been considered in the past? Someone like a Hill to West Coast for picks, or Darcy Cameron for a pick?

If at season's end we could add McGuane and two high class free agents to the list (LDU, Richards, TDK), as well as two to three high draft picks, would you consider it?

I don't have a set view on this yet, but it's something I've been mulling over from about halfway through last season.

Why would free agents come to us if we’re trading out senior players? None of that makes sense.
We either trade out players and go to the draft or we trade some players in and bring in free agents to replace our ageing players. What you’re suggesting here is a net zero gain in terms of list building.
Frankly, I’m of the opinion that if we can bring in a free agent like Richards, pick up McGuane in the draft and trade in JUH for not much, then we’re a long way to building up a new looking list anyway. Especially if Allan takes the next step during this year. It doesn’t take a whole lot to turn things around and focusing solely on the draft just doesn’t seem the right way to do it anymore.
