I genuinely feel like we're flotsam.

Situations that befall other clubs to me just don't feel like they MUST receive the same treatment when we're involved.

Take the first-round priority pick stuff. I can easily imagine a world where West Coast do receive one, and would wholeheartedly think they deserve one if they didn't sell WA's entire iron ore supply for Tim Kelly. I never felt we deserved one.

Or the suspension stuff. A world where we are suspended for actions for which other clubs cop a fine (or aren't even cited). Aside from moral/fairness qualms as North fans, it doesn't feel naturally wrong, like disruptive to the Earth's rotation, if we are given a bullshit suspension. It feels like, 'yeah, it's North' just about covers it. At least to me.

Is it because of our low fanbase? Low ratings?

It's a hierarchy, and I feel like we're slipping away from everyone

In short mate, the club is piss weak.

The last time anyone from the club got pissed off about something was when Bard lost his shit over the roof being open...

We should be pot shotting all arms of the AFL until it stops. **** them.

We're an easy target. It's not malicious, they are just indifferent to us. Small vic teams being successful does nothing for them - no extra eyeballs, no expansion of the game, and most importantly less clicks on their crappy click bait than if a big club did the same thing. It's why it's easy to use us as a tool to demonstrate they are trying to protect players or as a proxy to test new teams in new areas - we're not useful successful so they find another use for us while pointing to our low income as leverage.

I think Sonja and Jenn are doing a good job, but I would only ever see the AFL perception of us changing if they were forced to by a Gregg Swan type - sadly old white guy with boys club connections will always win out in that sense.

That's not true actually.

Bart lost it at the treatment of LT and copped tens of thousands of dollars of fines.

They’re not going to change the f/s for at least a couple of yrs - bluws have Walker coming through next year and * have Bewick in a couple of years.
They won’t want to upset them

We've got lucky with timing here. I can't imagine Graham Wright just copping it with Walker coming up.

I think they should leave f/s alone - it’s a great part of the game.
NGA is what there should target
It depends on what the end point is that they are trying to get to.

If it is a cleaner draft then they need to remove Academy access.

If it is equalising access to F/Ss then reduce the amount of games played required.

what it really depends on is what way the AFL want their thumb on the scales.

There needs to be an adjustment to how you pay for F/S...you can't have top teams paying for Ferraris with loose change.
This is not limited to F/Ss.

The points arrangement is broken. It was arguably fairer in how we had to pay for Luke McDonald.

You could make it "fairer" by making clubs pay for a nominated selection with a pick that can be no more than 15 picks from the nomination.

Gold Coast have top potential top 5 picks this year. If they get nominated at picks 2&3 under the above the cheapest they could get them would be with picks 17 and 18. We have live trading so I don't see an impediment to that.

It would end the pay for them with 5 picks spread across the 20s and 30s.

I doubt the AFL have any real interest in fair by the way.

If they thought they could get away with it they'd abolish it for night 1 of the draft when we had no first round pick and reinstate again on night 2.

Watching Ashcroft x2 and Fletcher duke it out with Daicos x 2 it became clear to me that the F/S needs to go.

Personally, I'd get rid of both the NGA's and F/S and just have a pure draft, you can't have the best teams getting access to the best kid in the country cos it feels nice.
I'm in the camp of kinda liking the romance of father/sons. But the price that needs to be paid for them is the problem. When strong sides can get a top 3 pick for the price of a couple of future thirds it's a stacked deck. And the less said about the academies the better.

Time to ditch father-son. Especially with the AFLW now becoming a juggernaut. It's just gonna become way too confusing for my liking.

Wrote this in the Toby Pink thread as well, but;

Ignoring for a moment that Pinky clearly earned the new contract, it's also important to note that moving him to the senior list and off the rookie list is a pretty big indicator that the club expects to lose the extra rookie list spots for 2026.

Current rookies (we have two extra spots) and those in bold/italics are the ones I expect we'll see delisted at the end of the season:

Zac Banch
Kallan Dawson
Robert Hansen Jr (signed an extension that kicks in in 2026)
Finnbar Maley
Geordie Payne
Toby Pink (signed an extension that kicks in in 2026)
Brynn Teakle
Cooper Trembath
Payne delisted? Phillips? I don’t think they’ll delist Trembath after 6mos on the list

If F/S is so important to the players then surely Ablett JNR would not have gone to GS. Sure he returned but he still left the club for a few season...Also it seems that F/S only apply to the clubs that have the players they want and not the ones that wont make it. Other clubs can have them..

The same thing applies to academies.

Not a single one of the four clubs would forgo selecting a first round talent should they be bid on by another club.

It’s hilarious hearing Kevin Sheehan wax lyrical about how good the system is when an academy club doesn’t match a bid in the 50’s….

F/S access can be achieved, but teams need to pay overs for the privilege of being able to jump the queue.

Whatever pick they are nominated for plus 50%... How much do they want these kids?
