F/S access can be achieved, but teams need to pay overs for the privilege of being able to jump the queue.

Whatever pick they are nominated for plus 50%... How much do they want these kids?
Maybe, it's a reasonable solution. The Clubs will find a loopole and stockpile worthless picks to gain enough points to pay a premium.

I just think it's easier to get rid of the concept all together. If Clubs are that desperate for the romance they will still access to all 2nd round talent, they will just have to use their 1st pick to secure them.

Cant have more picks in the draft than available list spots.

I've suggested before this kind of system:

You can match a bid in the same round
If you don't have a pick in that round stiff shit
If you already used a pick in that round stiff shit

Sure, clubs will occasionally take the piss but they can't manoeuvre around using a pick in that round.

Examples:

Darcy bid on pick #4, dogs use their 1st rounder #16 to match

Ashcroft bid #1, Lions use #18 to match. Fletcher bid #8, Lions have no other R1 to get him - unless they can live trade one in they miss out.

Gold Coast hold 3x R1s but no R2s. They match bids on Walter, Read then have to use the 3rd one to draft Rogers themselves without a bid rather than let him slide into R2.

This would be a hybrid between the different f/s and academy systems. I reckon it'd balance up between clubs and prospects over time.

Equalisation

1. Remove father son
2. Transition academy programs to AFL ownership. Graduates to become part of open draft pool
3. Extend draft contracts to include team option. e.g. First round draft picks would have an initial 3 year contract with a team option up to two years they could trigger
4. Remove Cat B rookies. Only way to enter the playing population is via open draft.
5. Remove all restrictions on pick trading
6. Expand free agency to commence following the completion of draft contract. Remove compensation
7. Allow for contracted players to be traded without consent
8. Publicise player salaries for transparency across the league working to highlight possible salary cap tampering

This is great

Might be a fire sale at the dees now

Lever, Trac, fritsch, clarry, van rooyen etc
Not sure why they'd want to start a rebuild by getting rid of a 22 yo key forward who's contracted until 2029. But if they're that stupid, consider me interested.

This is where it falls down eg: North have say pick 4, McCartney likely to get a bid in top 3, we just trade down to Brisbane at 18 plus extras. You never pay full value for the selection.

I've been in the scrap it all camp for as long as i can remember, but still can't see it happening.

But at a minimum you need to pay a premium if it remains, start with something like a 20% points tax above the value of the pick he's bid on at.

Agree there's room for some manipulation but at least this way you're always within a 17 pick range of the bid and have to be in the same 18 pick bracket.

ie you can't use pick #19 to match a bid at #10 because they're in different rounds.

And can't game the system using multiple 2nd rounders to pay for a 1st round bid.

Could be a big ask from our guys but smart targeting of role players feels like a good plan this off-season. Especially with our draft hand and a shit draft. We don't need to get younger either.

Get a few of Khamis, Davies/Windhager, Wilson, Gruzewski, Derkson, Budarick, Jiath, Frost, Chol, a big body second ruck.

love this. i like the romance of F/S but it has to go if we're to ever become a professional sport.
we should start with the first four right away, the others little by little over time.

AFL running academies is such a no brainer. Only reason they don't do it is to protect the northern clubs.

What happens if the premiers bid on a player at 18? eg: North pick a player at 5 with normal selection and Sam Harris is bid on by Bris at 18.

It's always going to be rorted so let's just scrap the lot, then Geelong, Pies and Syd can only manipulate the cap.

Mate, you get a shitload right on here and I reckon you’re bang on with this as well.

We need to get ruthless with a couple of these blokes and for me that’s LDU and Zurhaar. They are emblematic of our wishy washy environment. Ditch them.

But FFS, get rid of Brady first and get some campaigner with a bit of nous. Brady would call sen talkback on a Monday morning and tell the whole ****in afl world big sale! big sale!
I agree but I don’t think we have the balls for it with the people in charge. LDU and CZ have some currency. People have said we can’t trade them as no one will take on their contract.. We pay a fair chunk of it for better trade return. Rawlings need to go... Replace with a recruiting team that is ruthless at the trade table to extract maximum value and try to fix the unbalanced list that we have.
