I think they said Friday. It's the same day the seniors play.

I got into the Whitten Oval towards the end of the 2nd quarter.

Was good to see Hynes, L Kennedy, Croft, Bussllinger do well. Hynes very good in the 2nd half. Moves very well. I hope we give Buss ago at some stage but there are a lot still ahead of him.

Lachlan Smith very good.

Lachlan Smith rucked against someone from his draft year and was the clear winner. He is tracking nicely and has a great all round game.

I was really impressed by Hynes spread from the contest. Could’ve been used multiple times streaming into F50. Really attacking, using good burst but also seems like a hard nut. Firmly believe he will be a long term mid, that rotates forward. Exactly what we are after.

Maybe a bit of a Tory Dixon type , similar size ?
Smart and good kick for goal.

Don’t think he ends up on a AFL list.

He used to rotate forward/mid last year with Harvey Langford who is probably my favourite kid in last years' draft class.

You can see how clean Hynes often is with the ball, that's natural. For all the athleticism arguments in modern football I feel like Hynes is your classic "footballer first" type that has genuine goal sense and game sense. He probably ends up having less X factor but more production than most.

Yes that's probably a good comparison. About 184cm, not a prolific ball winner but has good instincts as a forward.

The VFL has announced the Smithy’s VFL State Team squad ahead of the clash with the SANFL’s West End State Team.

The Victorian Football League (VFL) has today announced the Smithy’s VFL State Team squad ahead of the clash with the SANFL’s West End State Team during Gather Round.

Footscray vice-captain Cooper Craig-Peters and electric forward Phoenix Spicer have been included in the 43-player squad ahead of the 2025 AAMI State Game, which will be played at Tanunda Recreation Park in the Barossa on Saturday, April 12.
The clash between the VFL and SANFL representative teams will follow the North Melbourne vs Gold Coast Suns AFL match at nearby Barossa Park, providing a footy showcase for the Barossa region.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team squad features representatives from 18 clubs across the 21-team competition.

Only VFL-listed players are available to be selected in the Smithy’s VFL State Team, with current AFL-listed players ineligible.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team coaching panel was announced last month, with Box Hill Hawks coach Zane Littlejohn reappointed as head coach.

The coaching panel comprises an additional five Smithy’s VFL club coaches in assistant roles. They include Jamie Cassidy-McNamara (Coburg), Stewart Edge (Footscray Bulldogs), Ben Hudson (Brisbane Lions), Jackson Kornberg (Frankston) and Taylor Whitford (Casey Demons).

I believe it may of been cancelled earlier in the week. I’m trying to confirm.

I understand the VFL is a competition in its own right and does not bring in the same amount of revenue as the AFL but the VFL does have a role in the development of some players into AFL standard. The VFL fixturing is woefully inadequate to meet this role. The number and timing of byes is a joke.

The AFL will only fund the VFL for 18 games with teams from 3 states flying every week. The AFL clubs want their VFL teams to be playing up and during the AFL finals so players are match fit to jump into an AFL final if required. Hence the 18 game VFL season is stretched out as long as possible, hence lots of byes.

I get that, but surely Vic teams could arrange practice matches amongst themselves to fill bye rounds? Maybe we can host a few at VUWO/MWO?
