So are you saying the contract that the Lions offer won’t set him up for life?
I don't get the whole 'set for life' thing.
What ever is wrong with doing some work when you finish playing footy ?

Most players would have around 35 years after footy before retirement age to at least earn enough to cover living expenses.
And surely at a bare minimum they'd own a home if they played 10 years of AFL.

My guess is Logan will end up at either TAS, Geelong or pies.

One of those clubs will make a crazy offer.
Pies love their key forwards starting with letter M in last name. :D

McStay, Membrey, Mihocek etc.

It would be a big hit but he already has 2 premierships (hopefully 3 by next year) and we can’t afford to give him a huge payday, he could get massive offers and for team balance I dont think we can match them. I really hope I am wrong but I think his offers will be absurd.
He could be a triple premiership key forward at 22 years who has proven he can lead a forward line at 20 and kick 50+ goals already.

Vic media frothing over NAS is silly, Morris would be the one who can trigger the 10 year 20M offer.

McKenna and McKeown.

Morris’s career achievements could be outrageous, hopefully we lean on making a legacy here with us and get the deal done.

2xpremiership player already, currently on trajectory to be the clubs all time leading goal kicker, potential top 20 all time. A few of the boys will have similar choices. Hopefully there are some precautionary tales about players like Ah Chee, TDK, etc that team and individual glory doesn’t necessarily follow them with big money offers.

As far as Logan Morris is concerned, making him our highest paid player is not an issue. When the money comes for him, we need to match it. Forced to choose between Bailey and Morris, I’d choose Morris every time. Given his age (21 in May), he could sign a 5 year deal on great coin at Brisbane and be every chance of picking up a couple of Premierships. If he, or his manager, really wants to chase the MEGA DEAL they should look at what he can command as a 26 year old.

Again, put Morris in a ‘lesser’ team and he may not be such a stand out. So far he has had the benefit of being able to run around in a forward line where opponents have had to try to cover Hipwood, Daniher, Rayner, Cameron and this year, Allen.

All that said, Logan Morris is among the most gifted players I’ve seen at this stage in his career. He had the potential to be up there with Bernie Quinlan and Alastair Lynch as one of the greatest key forwards in our club history. We can’t let him go. The upside is that the club knows this and must be doing, or have done, medium to long term salary cap projections and developed strategies to keep key players.

I'd sooner pay Morris $1.5 million next year than pay Zac Bailey $1.1 million next year.

Can’t we offer him a few hectares of prime undeveloped Springfield allotments too?

Just quietly, we'll have a serious problem next year in terms of keeping Morris. Unless he signs early this year, there'll be some massive offers rolling in for him. Keeping Hipwood as our steady hand along with Allen and young Gallop would be our likely way forward.

I actually like what Gallop is starting to show in defense. He can become a serious contributor once he gets his timing right on when to go and when to be smart about it. The way he almost took Dunkley's head off going for the spoil shows he'll bulldoze through any pack to get a spoil in. Great signs.

Or you know, we can pay Logan enough to get him to stay. Paying good players high salaries is ok!

We will offer what we can - considering the rest of the list profile.

Logan's willingness to stay for less and what other mega offers are out there may be the deciding factors.

With Gallop still wonder if backline might be a place for him.
If you look at our tall stocks outside of Gallop
Ruck/forward: Draper, Fort and Smith(Injured)
Forwards: Allen, Morris, Curtin and Hipwood(injured)
Ruck who play back: ZZ
Back: Harris, Lester, Joyce, (Dizzy and Payne Injured)

Defence has the most holes.
No idea how many years Froggy will keep going on.
Dizzy out for weeks again not getting any younger.
Payne played a 23 game season and 18 game season. Apart from that 13,12 and 10 games.
Not sure we can count on him playing a full season unfortunately.
Joyce a break glass type player.

So who do we have in the backline young and upcoming.
If everyone fit we have 5 Tall backs and 5 tall forwards (inc Gallop)
Although we playing the 3rd tall as a ruck. So currently only need 2 out of 5

Will add ZZ who does play in backline in VFL, Fagan said sees more of a ruck than defender.
Smith injured again and who knows with the new ruck rule how he go as not super quick.

I can’t cop losing Neale, Bailey and Logan in 2 offseasons. If you are committed to a salary structure that sees good players leave when they are out of contract (not in contract when we can get good value for them) then you need to rethink your strategy.

I cannot see Logan going to Tassie next year and we should be able to pay him good money ($1.1-1.3m) to stick around until he hits free agency.

Isn't Tasie 2028

We'll know the intentions soon either way. If Logan's like Ashcrofts then he'll lock in a contract up until free agency with no fuss. Same with Lohmann I hope. Fingers crossed.

Agreed with others Morris will most likely sign a very good deal to get him to Free Agency. From there who knows but we should not be stingy in the money we spend on him. Brisbane should know more than most how hard it is to find and develop great key forwards.

Some good points here davemc_lions, but I am not as concerned about our defence. Andrews is 29 and could play well into his 30’s, Lester could easily go again next year given his form and fitness and Payne is only 26. I think Joyce is better than people give him credit for and he’s turning 29 this month. Throwing Gallop (only 20) down back permanently is not out of the question given his ability to compete fiercely and Zane Zakostelsky is also only 20 and could become strong option, irrespective of how Fagan sees him currently. Then there is Gardiner to come back. We also have the ability to try and pull a defender with a ‘moneyball’ style draft pick, like Lobb at Footscray. At some stage we will also have a fit Hipwood as a WILDCARD.

These are only our taller defensive options. We certainly aren’t short on smaller back pockets / half backs.

The first step is to convince Lester to keep going after this year. We still have time on our side.

Never underestimate Froggy and Joyce is more then usable.

Although Payne and Dizzy get a lot of injuries. If Gallop plays well for 8-10 weeks while they are out.
Could cement his place as a back who can swing forward.
With Hippy coming back we also could drop a ruck later on and Gallop rucks defence and Allen forward.

Agree. We have options. We have won our last two games with no Andrews or Payne or Gardiner and Froggy holding our backline together. Not many people would have thought that was possible a few years back. Andrews coming back is huge for us. Hats off to Lester (superstar) and keep an eye on Joyce. He is massively underrated.

Agree with many that losing Logan would be the biggest blow. I think it’s likely Tassie will pick up one of our young guns as is the nature of expansion sides and us being flush for depth, but with impending retirements (plus Neale going) we will have the cap to pay very close to market value for most.

That said, we’ve always been good at identifying talent on other lists and bringing them over. IF we were to lose one or two of our up and comers, I’d be looking at our neighbours who also have a number of guys that can’t break the senior team (some Queenslanders too). Hasn’t shown the consistency, but I’d be asking Jed Walter the question first.

Given what our club has shown in recent years, we won’t be static in ensuring we’ve got contingencies in place to keep the group contending if the godfather offers come for some. There’s enough of a nucleus signed up for the long term that we will be up the pointy end for a while barring any unforeseen issue.
