Preview 2026 MSD Draft Prospects

This was the game that had AFL clubs sit up and take notice as Noah McMenamin took a stack of intercept marks and put himself on the radar for the mid season draft for teams that need to bolster their tall defender stocks. McMenamin will reportedly line up for Collingwood's VFL team this weekend to give the Pies and others a look at how he goes stepping up to a higher level.

I'm a fan. My thoughts towards the end of April below. At 188cm more a medium defender would you say?
If we can't get Bamert, I'd be more than happy to pick up him or another state league defender.
Noah McMenamin from Western Jets shows some promise as a 188cm swingman who looks pretty athletic to the eye at least and takes some nice grabs. Pretty good composure when he was playing down back.

Thredgold is a kid whose development is critical on where we end up.

And because a few of you want to see how someone goes in the back end of the season you expect to stunt his development of getting perhaps 4-6 games into him to bring someone in.

Where would that leave his mindset over Summer if he was ready to play in the back end of the season and then potentially a VFL finals series.

You’d have the Club say to him sorry pal you’re fit now but just sit it out because we needed to trial someone else for a similar length of time? Great retention strategy.

Just let the medicos determine what’s best for Thredgold, which no doubt they are doing, rather than pontificating here about the fact we should just stunt the development of a talented young player so we get a pick at the MSD table.
Absolutely. If there's a chance that Thredgold can play some footy in the back half of the year, you'd take that every day. He is going to be an important player.
💯 this.

This kid has something special and I prefer we get half a dozen games into him come July than a shot at a ‘shiny new toy’ who has a high chance of not even being on the list in 12 months..

Get Thready Ready!!

Funny thing re Fishers, we didn't enquire about his professionalism or lack there of.
Apparently Carlton would have told us, but as we didn't ask, they felt it not necessary to divulge any pertinent information.
Now that is a strike against the responsible person at North
But yeah IDRGAF, we seem to be heading in the right direction and as long as we learn from our mistakes.

We got Fishers and pick 17 for 21 and 25, so yeah ouch. Not sure what the Blews did with the picks. Goadness me was who we selected with 17 which became 20. I think anyways
Will Dawson

We seem to have a habit of not doing our due diligence with draftees.
We took Dawson with 20 (17). They took Ashton Moir with 29 (21) and traded 25 for Elijah Hollands from GC and got pick 28 back (became 34), which they took Billy WIlson with. So Wilson and Moir vs Fisher and Dawson.
Pretty happy with what we got with Dawson, but Dawson/Morris at 29 and Freijah at 34 would've been unreal.

Melbourne and North like Bamert, but not sure if we go with him or look at some hb class or height. Should hopefully be simple, get Bamert and turn him into a bullocking mid-forward.

A huge performance at the perfect time for NHH who reminded recruiters why he absolutely should have been selected in last season's national draft. He played the first half on a back flank, flying out of the blocks with a 12 disposal first term, looking composed with the ball and working hard with rebounding run and folding back to cover defensively. In the second half he moved to a wing, playing 100% of game time, showing his elite endurance and running power, continuing to rack up stacks of the footy and use it well. He was a bit more conservative with the ball than usual, but must have gone at nearly 100% disposal efficiency and hit the scoreboard as he often does with a couple of majors.

I like Jake Smith or Jack Riding from Werribee.

Jake Smith should have been taken in his draft year IMO, and has come a long way at Werribee from a role player to an essential part of their midfield alongside Charlie Lazarro. Super classy, can play inside/outside and very versatile positionally - doing his apprenticeship at Werribee and biding his time to win a midfield spot has been good for him.

Jack Riding trained with Hawthorn over the preseason and they chose not to go with him, but I think there's a place for him at AFL level. You could put his last 15 games at VFL level against anyone else and make an argument he's been the best player in the comp over that time. He's a hard edged midfielder who hits the scoreboard regularly - I could see him playing basically any position on the ground outside key position posts/ruck.
Watched a bit of Werribee this year, Ryan Eyers and Jake Smith have been impressive. I’m tipping they’re the 2 that might go in the MSD….the footy factory will continue to deliver this year. Few others like Lazzaro, Pinniuk, Brady Wright could also be a chance.

I was a fan. Has he improved his 2km time trial this year?

Who would go for pinnuck? He’s 28 and has been trying for years to get drafted with no luck.

Any decent forwards coaches in the VFL looking for an opportunity?
Not happy with X. Clarke? Racial.

I'd imagine there'll be not much change if we had 0 coaches versus what we have currently.

I'm trying to remain positive however, if we keep making no changes and continue playing those we shouldn't, I'm about to have Michael Douglas 'Falling Down' type day.

The forward line seem to stand in a bunch, flat footed, expecting the ball on a silver platter. It looks like an area that could improve dramatically quite easily.

The backline is just a potato farm.

Is Mitch Mellis a massive Smokey to get selected? Thoughts. He’s been a terrific player at local footy. From memory he was stiff not to get selected out of the Eastern Ranges.

Also does anyone know if any players have been subject to a medical. Haven’t seen this spoken about anywhere.

Thanks Mrs Mellis, I hope your boy goes well.

Still think Louie Montgomery or Jackson Voss would get a game and contribute at a solid enough level from the get go across half back.

Montgomery more damaging with his kicking Voss more dour with his lock down ability.
All the talk appears to be Bamert but you’d think these guys should be a priority on a needs basis if we think either are up to it.

We liked Jaxon Artemis in his draft year, we interviewed him for a potential rookie spot. I'd imagine we'd still be keen on him, but I reckon he'll go in the top 2-3 picks given his athletic upside at AFL level.
Definitely expect the Tigers will take Artemis.

Really like the Voss and Bamert suggestions. Curious if we look at a tall at all.
