Still reckon it will be around 1.5mil combined.
Reports were suggesting a fair bit less. And it's a fair bit less again as we'll need to replace them and even first year players get paid a bit - you can't spend it all on one salary. Their 3 salaries will be replaced by 3 salaries.

When has the media ever been accurate on salaries?
We know the average wage is now around 500-600k. Not sure how much below average wage they will be getting paid. Yep, first year players get a little more, but putting some senior players on the rookie list also saves a portion of their wage.

The reports alongside Checkers departure and Elliott:s prolonged contract negotiations makes me think that dropping veteran salaries is our strategy. But yeah the size of their salaries is a guess.

The bolded isn't a saving. We always run with the maximum of 6 rookies, which gives us the maximum possible saving from the rookie rules. It doesn't matter who those 6 are as the saving is only the base rookie wage.

Space will be there due to the regular salary cap increases and us reducing the wage of veterans, more than by veterans retiring.

Depth outside the best team is already an issue and will start impacting the best team if we don't get lucky with developing kids. I think guys like Pendles, Sidey, Howe will need to be replaced by blokes on decent wages, so wouldn't view their retirements as adding to a war chest for a star. But it sounds like there's enough there anyway to make a big play if we can persuade someone.

If you put HDM and Ryan who have contracts for next year on a rookie list and 70k less of their wages isn’t included in the cap and can be re-directed elsewhere- granted it a huge amount, but could we give the extra $140k to someone else?

From what I hear, we have ball park money to bring in both King and Butters next year. Others are offering more, but we are still in with a good chance. Trading for matched bids will be a challenge if they nominate us.

It's not a "saving" on our current postion as we already do it. Each rookie gives you the same amount of discount. We've been shuffling between lists for years in order to run with the maximum number of 6 rookies and thus get the maximum discount.

I think nearly all clubs would be doing it - it's a stupid rule and creates all the questions about senior pros becoming rookies through the rookie draft. Just scrap the discount and increase the salary cap by the amount of the discount.

Thankyou! I just had this exact conversation with my brother and was about to jump out the window. You can’t replace veterans with volunteers, you still have to pay them at least the minimum.

This is not an attack just an observation

2 players we really wanted but didn’t give up enough to move to the pick to grab them
  • Bont
  • Humphrey

I don’t know if St Kilda would have moved off pick 3 or if GCS would have moved off pick 6
(Or what it would have taken)

In what universe were we getting the Bont?
Club wastes too.much time on pie in the sky stuff rather which mostly fall through (except Houston thou he fell into our laps due to the dees issues and ports ineptitude).
Should go back to what we did in 22 which netted a flag

Target some players on the periphery.
Will Graham would be a great get, get him on the cheap.
Jake Rodgers is one we should target. Was a Collingwood supporter and plays midfield quite a bit in the VFL. Instant bobby replacement but with the ability to go into the middle and impact

It popped into my head bc of Humphrey’s performance last night and our want to get him at his draft time as was our desire to get Bont when we moved up to six but didn’t move to pick 3

Just a discussion point

Cool pointless aggressive post however

LOL at all the people telling us not to target Petracca because his body was done.

Would of singlehandedly extended our window, and if he dug his heels in, we could have got a deal done.

Wouldnt put it past him to win the brownlow this year.
We didn’t have the capital to do the deal
Look at what the deal was in the end.

It’s great to “LOL” and say “had he dug his heels in”…when the reality was had he dug his heels in he would still be in a Dees jumper sulking it up and stinking the joint out
It was not a Clayton Oliver firesale

he wanted out of Melbourne. And we didn’t have any currency. Pretty simple stuff. For partly the same reasons we were never in the race for Oliver or JUH. Our club doesn’t suit players wanting out of the spotlight.

Wasn't meant to be aggressive.
Didn't know you were referring to the draft.
Anyway I do maintain the list is in trouble long term demographic wise.
Absolutely have to nail any fa from here and find a way to give more games to more younguns.
e.g. I reckon Lipinski and Bullers spot tomorrow should've gone to West and a debutant.

The West obsession is getting ridiculous. He looked a mile off against norf. Let him continue to learn in the vfl. If we get injuries, then he might be considered. Buller was covering heaps of ground and presenting really well. Which debutante would you play?

11 disposals. 2 goals. 5 score involvements I think given the conditions he did pretty well. Def not a mile off.
Won’t be too long before he pushes his way in.

Against norf in a practice match. Not exactly a good guide. He won't be playing ahead of our other 3 tall forwards unless there's an injury or a dramatic form slump. He'll get a few games but can't see him being a regular this year, which is perfectly fine

he’s a fan of playing anyone manic, wanted Macrae and HDM to get regular games. Tad harsh on west, he was ok in testing conditions given norths midfield dominance.

I do agree though, I just can’t agree with all those pushing for Steene, Cochran etc to play. They’d get destroyed in match day threads

I really like West but we just need to be a bit more patient. We've got better key forwards atm. Steene looks like he'll need more development and Cochrane is close but still quite far. Maybe we're a bit more patient. I'd love for all of them to play but you do more harm by playing them too early.

If you are judging him against north then you should judge everyone against north. But given his inexperience he did fairly well against an afl opponent- he looked really mobile and fitter in getting up and down the ground. I would give him a tick in his development.

He’ll play games this year just a matter of when. He’ll start tearing games in the vfl even more so than last year and they will be forced to play him.

Patients jen, it hasn't even happened yet. All I'm saying is that patience will be required.

Nobody is saying he needs to play ahead of the others right now - I just think you are being pessimistic for no reason. He showed great signs and he’ll get even better moving forward.

Go look at what Gold Coast paid for him and tell me how we get that done without seriously compromising our chances of landing Butters or King this year
