If that's what it takes to get him. Yep!
Ho noes, this multiple premiership-winning Brownlow medallist has taken advantage of free agency to get paid more than me!

This is the only element that gives me pause, but Elliott got paid. It may have cost us Mihocek Sunday showed though why we low balled his offer. Neale is a significantly better footballer than Elliott and would walk in as top 3 on our list so you frame it to the vets that they’ve been looked after over their career and this is purely about winning. They’re OOC though and not as valuable as Neale would be so they can look elsewhere.
The vets won’t care, they’d be chomping at the bit to get him in if it means one last crack at a flag.

Hewett would be cheap. The biggest knock on him pre-draft was his kicking. It’s hard to believe that both Tsatas and Ned Long have Hewett covered for career kicking efficiency. Hewett has been dropped this week after struggling to get near the ball this season averaging only 4 kicks per game
Hewett is a player with immense upside if he can stay on the park. Looks like a good kid and a leader.

He would thrive in our system and wouldn’t cost much at all. Can run through the mid and play forward. We would be crazy to not look at him.

There may not be many vets left come next year lol

I’d have thought the same of Mihocek, but it destroyed his 2025 according to his Ball Magnets interview. Crisp is the one I look at (even though he has the trigger) and wonder after losing his two best mates and remaining so loyal for so long whether he could look to cash in elsewhere given he thinks he has another 5 years in him. I’m not anticipating it happens it did cross my mind though.

The poor kid has had his fair whack of injuries since being drafted incl. a foot injury that progressively worsened over time just after he was drafted.

He has had little exposure in the Eagles midfield since being drafted and has been stuck at half-forward struggling to get a kick. He gets dropped, only to star playing midfield in the WAFL only to be brought back in to play half forward with little midfield time despite the Eagles lack of midfield talent.

He does have skills but has had little chance at senior level to showcase them

The Eagles have put a new long-term deal to take him through to free agency (reportedly $3.5m) which he is reportedly in no hurry to sign.

It has been reported in the media that he is gettable. If the Eagles value him that highly why aren’t they committing harder to developing him as a midfielder?

Context for Checkers is very different to most 33 year old AFL players. He only had an eight year career for us. The first couple would have been on a standard Aussie wage. Year 1 as a rookie would have been $70,000+ match payments. Most blokes still playing AFL at 33 won't have to work again if they don't want to. He will and won't slot straight into the industry and isn't particularly suited to talking at sportsmen nights. He needs to cash in from playing.

So if Pendles, Sidey and Howe all retire and we got Lachie Neale, he'd be the second oldest player in the team after Jamie?
Yeah, just. A few months older than crisp. So Crisp would be third, the the rest are more on the 30 bracket.

Talk of vic clubs monitoring Elijah Hewett

His body has been a little bit a miss but he could complement our next batch of on ballers —particularly in the JDG mould of power and burst.

Wouldn’t come too expensive via trade either I reckon on exposed form.

One to watch and hopefully we consider if he’s serious about moving from Perth
Watched him heaps in '25, would be a great get. Only concerning thing is his injury issues.

The ground in WA is terrible for foot injuries because it's so hard, he may have better luck playing on our grounds more often as they are softer, except for Marvel.

I would hope that each and everyone of us over the age of 16 is familiar with his journey. Not to mention that it was something he covered in the podcast. The point still stands though that Crisp has forgone a lot of money over the years and we can’t ignore the possibility that he no longer has the same emotional bond to the club he once did with Checkers and WHE alongside him for the previous 8 years. All of this is theoretical of course and ultimately unlikely to come to pass, but I think it would be naive to think there won’t be broken eggs to make an omelette in 2027 inclusive of Neale and King. It’s a relatively minor egg, but I for one wouldn’t complain if Allan is plying his trade for his dad’s old club next year with O’Driscoll replacing him.

If the definition is 30+ in 2027 then outside the eldest 3 I have Crisp, Elliott, Neale, Cameron, Moore, Maynard, Membrey, Frampton, McStay, Houston and JDG (Shoota is 30 after GF day).

I think the whole point is if Crisp leaves for money, they won't care. They'll thank him for fabulous service and shake his hand.

Maybe they don’t think his body can take the physical load of playing midfield - that seems the most logical conclusion.

It’s the correct point just separate to what instigated the discussion. Philosophically I’m very much aligned with your views on it.
Surely Membrey is done this year. I’d probably chop him before the older three tbh.
Quite possibly and at this stage I think all three of the older crew are probable’s for 2027. I suspect though that the club will look to transition the list in phases which means a few depart each year and a challenging offseason from a cuts perspective.

In terms of the veterans -

Membrey - could be his last year … maybe gets one more if West doesn’t develop as hoped and/or McStay struggles in second half of seadon

Pendles. Let’s be honest - his call. Depends if he wants st start the next phase (coaching/media) or if he still has the hunger.
Howe - reckon this is his last season
Sidey. Maybe survives if Pendles retires
