Joondalup is like 20-30kms from Perth CBD. It's a part of the Perth metro area which has like 2 million people. I'd think it's gonna do alright. Big challenge is pulling away some fans from West Coast and Fremantle.Populations :
Cairns - 161,391
Darwin - 150,041
Joondalup - 166,598
Canberra - 472,000
Anyone who thinks putting an AFL team into a small country town is going to work has rocks in their head, it'll be Canberra by the length of Flemington straight.
I think stick with 19 for a few years, see if a 20th is warranted . Possibly a merger could occur ( like bears and fitzroy) between Gold Coast and a Melbourne team.
Or a merger between the new Tassie team and a Melbourne team could occur.
Compare the population of England (and Wales I guess), France, Italy and Spain to Australia though. The EPL, Ligue 1, Serie A, La Liga, that's four of the top five football leagues in Europe (and the other one, Bundesliga, has 18 teams).
Canberra will get behind their team, they average decent enough crowds for GWS home games.
I get GWS getting a certain amount of funds from playing there. Is it possible for GWS to replace it with a large NSW population? Not sure what's West but I guess they could try the Central Coast?

With how many A/C units?NT is my choice with TIO Stadium having a roof
They do it for the Easter Show talking over their field don't they? Could surely play a few weeks at the SCGI still think GWS should play more games in Sydney, but if they had to play one or two outside for scheduling/sponsorship reasons, I'd pick Newcastle.
Largest city in the country without a team, and they've just reconfigured their stadium to better suit AFL. Decent amateur league, too.
I could definitely see that working. maybe a Norwood/ Sturt JV based at the Parade? Ready-made old school class rivalry with Port, though you’d get a lot of conflicted Adelaide fans.In terms of something already established - Norwood would be the biggest club outside the AFL.
If they could make The Parade comfortable for 15k, they'd sell that out for every home game. It is Adelaide's version of North Sydney Oval.
Their rivalry with Port on a national stage would create another drawcard fixture. Norwood would get 40k plus at Adelaide Oval for the games against Crows and Port and 20k-30k against the big drawing interstate clubs from the get go.
The Crows might take a bit of a hit initially but Adelaide is big enough and footy mad enough to ensure the Crows remain a big club. I'm not sure who Paul Kelly would support. He's already done all the dumb things so I suspect he'd stick with the Crows in the AFL.
Port has become established since the move to Adelaide Oval and going back to being "one club" and drawing on its tradition. Their home at Alberton in the outer north-west of Adelaide is in the heartland of where most of their support would lie - although like all clubs, they'd have supporters scattered all over.
Norwood would need to do the same from the start re calling upon their tradition. They are based at The Parade in the eastern suburbs. Less than 5km from Adelaide Oval. If you were to hop on an electric scooter you'd pass by Prince Alfred College, St Peters College, Adelaide University and some parklands on the way. The "other end of town" to those from Port Adelaide. Norwood would not expected to be as big as Port or Adelaide, but could become a boutique type club, who could add value by being self sufficient and adding an extra game to the AFL calendar. AFLW games are already played there.
I'm not sure what footy is like in the WAFL, but in Adelaide it was always Port vs Norwood and then the rest. Three teams in SA could work. There is a natural rivalry already established and deep roots laid of the three clubs.
The Adelaide Crows soon to be new base at Thebarton Oval, West Torrens old home ground, is in the inner west of Adelaide on South Road. About the same distance west of Adelaide Oval as The Parade is east. This section of South Road is the last to be redeveloped (called the North-South Motorway), which connects the far south of Adelaide from Old Noarlunga, which is the gateway to the Fleurieu/McLaren Vale etc. to the north of Adelaide and onto the northern expressway out to Gawler/Barossa and beyond with no traffic lights. The Crows remain centrally based, if not the Team for all South Australians, then at least the team for the rest of them. And the rest of them have a strong dislike for Port and Norwood.
There are already 110 South Australians on AFL lists. With some concessions, similar to Tasmania, they could establish a squad with a healthy amount of strong local talent. Plus, the SA Premier and current AFL CEO are already best friends. Pump some of the Gather Round profits into The Parade, get some of the benefactors of Norwood Footy Club involved and you could pretty quickly establish a team to enter with Tasmania if the bye was considered less than ideal and the extra game brought in more TV $$.
As much as I dislike Norwood, they are a club that deserves to be on the national footy stage.
