So what do you have?

B Anderson Bower Simpson
HB Walker Waite Thornton
C Gibbs Stevens Grigg
HF Russell Cloke Houlihan
F Blackwell Fevola Fisher
R Hampson Judd Murphy
INT Kreuzer, Jackson, Hadley, Armfield
Emerg: Betts, Wiggins, Austin

In: Blackwell, Hadley, Jackson
Out: Carrazzo (inj), Scotland (inj), Bentick

Bentick dropped on account of getting him finals eligibility for the Ants. Browne not recalled on a similiar account. No reason for Betts or Wiggins to risk reinjuring themselves. Blackwell and Jackson deserve one last shot to prove their worth to the list, especially with reports of Scotland and Carrazzo having pulled up sore after the win.

Grigg to go to Hodge, Anderson to Williams, Russell to run with Bateman, Walker to go with Campbell Brown, Gibbs head to head with Mitchell, Bower to be directly opposed to Franklin, with Waite double teaming, Thornton to Roughead.

Etc. etc. etc.

I'd be inclined to make minimal changes given the result last saturday night.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Bentick out, Hadley in. Hads is almost as hard, just as "quick" and a far bettr user of the ball.

Scotty and Carrots can hang in there for one more game, surely ?

Perhaps one other change will be The Wiggler coming in if he's fit. Not sure for whom though.

Can anyone honestly see us bringing home the bacon this week?

It would give the players that edge and hunger going into the pre-season.

Pleeeeeeease Blues.

Liked the team we had last week and was happy Hoops played well
Wiggo, EddieB if fit could come in and of course
DAVID ELLARD should be in but next year I guess.
Their big forwards will trouble us so we need to win the ball in the middle, run hard and tackle hard etc
Lets not get too far behind any rely on our big finishes

I drove over from Adelaide for the 99 prelim. on the basis that funny things can happen in football and you never know when a proud, gun club will pull something amazing out of the hat.

Our VERY BEST football is pretty good, as we saw in the first quarter against North. Some day soon we'll put 4 quarters of it together. If that's this weekend we'll win.

I can't see Jackson and Blackwell playing for Carlton again.

Gone.

AB might be a better match up for Mitchell or Lewis as a defensive mid than Hadley with his tackling. But I can see Gibbs playing on Mitchell after the pre-season game at the Dome when Gibbs shut him down and won 9 contested possessions. Hadley would be a better match up for Lewis than AB because he can kick a goal and has better disposal.

Russell might get Ellis or Birchall.

Walker would be a good match up for Birchall or Brown playing out of the pocket and would keep them honest with his leap and size.

And keep Brown from helping out Fev's man.

Hodge does the same thing, but I hope he drops in front of Fevola like Slattery tried and cops it.

Make Hodge earn it if he wants to get in your space and the chance to bump him presents itself.

Hawthorn have too many half backs to cover when Brown, Hodge, Ladson, Ellis, Birchall, etc. can all use the ball well running off half back and the wing.

A Wiggins v Brown match up would have been a good tough contest.

In: Hadley
Out: Bentick

Who gets Rioli?

On holidays Monday so hope the team gives it a red hot go instead of starting the vacation early. Going out on a high would be great. Want to win the game as the priority so hope we are not too focused on Fev and the Coleman.

Thinking along the same lines here. We can really go hard this week, as our next game is 5 months away. So we really should make Hawthorn earn their stripes this week.

Not to fussed what changes they make this week, as long as all 22 have a dip.

Somehow I think Hodge may enjoy it too much, in a sick, twisted sadistic kind of way :p

On the match-ups...

Bryce Gibbs to Grant Birchall: Grant Birchall is the HB general and the one most of their plays go through. Bryce has the footskills to damage him the other way but also shut him down.

Joe Anderson to Cyril Rioli: Only option as far as I'm concerned. We need someone to completely nullify this guy because Franklin and Roughead create a lot of crumbs, and his tackling swings momentum. We need Rioli tackled early and with conviction.

Bret Thornton to Lance Franklin: I said this last week prior to the Brisbane game. Waite is a zoning off CHB. You can't zone off Buddy Franklin and get away with it.

Paul Bower to Jarryd Roughead: Bower is quicker and can hurt Roughead going the other way. Roughead likes leading towards the goals and bower is particularly good at stopping that move.

Jarrad Waite to The Space 10 meters in front of Buddy: We must make Franklin mark over the top of other players. It's the weakest part of his game and something we should try to exploit.

Richard Hadley to Luke Hodge: Hodge needs a hard tag and I think hadley is our most versatile option.

Chris Judd to Sam Mitchell: Mitchell is damaging in and under, but Judd is better. Mitchell's strength is linking the ball to Hodge, Birchall and company so if you've got them covered, you can afford to go head-to-head with Mitchell.

I think it's going to be a lot closer than people think.

This is where it would fall apart. You cannot expect a guy that's been out of A Grade football for so long (and whos not even that good when he is in it) to take on one of the games best players. Hodge would blow him to smitherines.

If we are serious about developing players for next year then Austin must come in IMO, remember Hampson and Jamieson getting valuable experience late last year and they have certainly benefitted from those games.

I would play all the blokes this week that we need to get answers on and in the roles we need them for the future also, hell play Austin on Buddy with Waite the 3rd man up as he couldn't do any worse then Thornton.

Bentick out as we know what he brings to the table, could also argue the same point with a few others also and as much as i would like to see Hadley in and playing well there is no need to risk him as we have a fairly good understanding of what he can bring to the table also.

London Calling you have got the team all right but if Carrazzo or Scotland want to play drop Armfield. Jackson and even more so IMO Blackwell deserve a game.

Judd>Hodge
Stevo=Mitchel
Gibbbs=Crawford
Murph>Swelle
Grigg<Bateman

pretty even game but fev's in town

I don't understand what all you guys see in Blackwell. IMO he's not even worth persisting with and he should be dropped when the opportunity comes. He's not fast, his skill level is nothing special. Basically there is nothing that makes him any better than anyone else, Can someone tell me if Blackwell played much towards the end of last year(i can't remember)? if not. was he injurerd? If no to both then he's looking very unlikely to be playing with us next year.

You guys are looking at matching up on the wrong players, IMO. Birchall, he needs to be severly tagged, because his disposal will hurt you. Osborne is another dangerous player that you need to look at. He never gets noticed by teams, because lets face it, when you got Hodge, Mitchell and Bateman, you are never gonna get noticed.

Also, watch out for Ellis.

Carlton is full of jokers :).

The difference between Carlton and Hawthorn is players that are the 10th-22nd best players. In a team like Hawthorn, Geelong, etc. the players who are fringe players are better than fringe players in a team like Carlton, Richmond or Brisbane.

I don't think so Murph is not that good yet. And Gibbs is more like Mitchell, Stevo more like Crawf so that is who you should be comparing. And in that case: Mitchell > Gibbs, Stevens = Crawf. Hawks have the wood on us in the middle.

Your patrol just moved on to the left, you better catch up quick if you don't want to be left behind...

Spot on. I am not saying that Carlton are crap, you have some really good players. You can heavily tag Hodge, Mitchell and Bateman. But then your gonna get guys like Lewis, Ellis and Ladson stepping up.
