Past #26: Tarryn Thomas [Part III] - [C.Twomey] AFL rules TT is eligible to play in all competitions as of 14 October

I really appreciate Sphynx and all the effort he puts into posting. He gives us great insight into training, drafting, etc.

In an effort to safeguard himself (and others) in the future should he look up thesaurus.com and look up possible synonyms? If he said "Thomas looked slothful today" or "thomas was really passive during drills" would that be okay? Is it just the word "lazy" that needs to be avoided?

Or moving forward should no one say anything negative about his application, fitness, game? It'd be good to get some clarification on this.

The issue with this thread is lazy automatically gets brought up with any criticism.
He could have a 25 possession, 3 goal game and miss a tackle, the line gets thrown about, if only he was a better trainer, he would’ve made that tackle, he’s lazy etc, etc..

You know the hilarious thing?

I never even mentioned the word lazy, it was you and The Warlord who inserted it in the conversation. So who has the subconscious racial stereotyping again?

I called him a shit trainer.

Is "shit trainer" a typical racial stereotype you hear on a daily basis when referring to first nations people? I wouldnt have thought so.

It certainly wasn't a one off comment by that poster - they have a loooooong rap sheet when it comes to Tarryn. Is why I made the posts I did.

I have a long history criticising Tarryn's training standards.

Because he has a long history of never achieving even the average AFL fitness levels.

I have a long history doing it, because I've witnessed it, in person for that same period of time.

Can't remember taking the same issue with Jy Simpkin, I wonder why?

It's entirely hilarious to me that your defence seems to consist of "Oh but he finished 6th in the B&F in 2023"

Can't remember taking the same issue with Jy Simpkin, I wonder why?

Really?

You didn't have an issue with Jy's standards when he got himself shitfaced and hit by a motorbike and almost ruined his career during pre-season?

I certainly did.

But then I don't make this shit up as I go along like you do.

No. Because, again, you seem really confused about basic comprehension.

I have an issue with Tarryn's training standards and general fitness levels. His current off field issues are completely separate to the issues I have with him, most of my criticism pre-dates his off field problems.

Kids make mistakes like getting pissed and hit by a motorbike. Kids make mistakes like having a messy breakup like Tarryn did with his mrs..... You want them to learn from these mistakes.

Jy Simpkin finished 5th in the club time trial in 2018 when that occurred, behind Mason Wood, Trent Dumont and Tom Wilkinson.

Tarryn finished 42nd last year.....

Now, not everyone needs to be Jy Simpkin (hello Ben Cunnington), but I think Cunnington's limitations were physical ones, not a mindset and attitude one, like Thomas.

Thomas could be one of the greats of this football club, there's currently a 1% chance of that happening.

The hilarious thing will be when you turn on him when he moves clubs at the end of the year though. Can you imagine the mental gymnastics you are going to have to undertake if he moves to Tullamarine with Brad? Lets revisit your attitude to him then. There were a hell of a lot of defenders of Ben McKay this time last year also.

Anyone who thinks he can judge training standards and fitness levels of an individual athlete from the other side of the fence without access to any data or awareness of training loads, or injury management, or the explicit instructions of the fitness staff is most likely delusional. And if that dubious judgment is directed at a single person over a sustained period, then it naturally attracts suspicions of prejudice.

does that mean we should stop critiquing match day performances or discussing selections too? Because to be honest we don't have a whole lot of anything on this forum other than observations from behind the fence or on the TV/computer. But we are here and we chat so I guess that makes us all delusional :thumbsu:

Oh this is just magical stuff, keep going.

We keep coming back to the reality that he was able to get back in the team quickly last year and deliver at a very high level.

But that's right, that doesn't count as actual fitness or training dedication because he was only winning contested footy, clearances and smashing in inside 50s in a historically crap team.

Its genuinely hilarious now. I know you're fooling yourself, but this stuff isn't working on normal people.

(And I'll wat for him to move clubs before I bag him for moving clubs, but tbh with racist snipers like you around, wouldn't blame him. Of course if he re-signs, what will your excuse be then?)

Selection and form is far from a "gotcha" moment.

I don't care about this conversation, but there have been plenty of poor trainers in the AFL that are good enough to always get selected when available and play at a high standards.

I hope Tarryn can sort out these off field set backs and do what he does best, but better!

When it comes to footy, being selected in the side and then playing well is the only metric that counts.

Do you honestly think Clarko gifts out games to poor trainers?

Out of interest, how many games did TT play under Clarko?

From memory his first one back was against Essendon in early June.

Clarko was off then, but Ratten and Viney aren't exactly soft touches.

Clarko returned for Rd21 against the Dees in August.

Tarryn played all the games under Clarko.

He only missed one of the possible games after his return, Round 15, too - which speaks to him being in very good nick.

From training well.

Seriously lol at those who think Viney would’ve let TT back in the fold if he came back unfit or not busting his arse at training.

Especially given Viney was the key footy person involved in bringing him back. And how much work they're putting in to building the culture in the playing group.

Here less so, plenty elsewhere on social media who want him sacked.
The hypocrisy about Tarryn is astounding.
Yes this young, immature man from a very difficult background (some posters may share a similar background, but most of us don’t and I can say this being a youth worker who’s daily is child protection services and students with trauma backgrounds) has made some stupid and damaging actions, we hear about these inappropriate text messages. Nothing else has resulted in police or convictions. Neither convicted or settled out of court.

We have Jordan DG, love his turn around in form and behaviour but he has worse priors. Pleaded guilty to lesser sexual offence.
Stringer, affairs while wife pregnant, that comes under heading of domestic abuse in form of emotional abuse.Worse than a stupid, nasty TT text, I’d say. Stringer is a media darling.
We can go on.
People need to be leaving young, sometimes stupid Tarryn alone and letting him get his shit together.
I want the boy back smiling, kicking goals and getting the support to grow up and make better choices.
I’m with you Tarryn 🌈

Whilst stereotyping of Aboriginal people around laziness and violence is horrific, I would suggest in this case, saying an individual is a lazy trainer is not racism. If the comment was 'All Aboriginals are lazy trainers' then that would be different. I certainly would not take racial offence at being called a lazy trainer.
