OK, I brought this up last year and I'm bringing it up again now.

Since the final 8 was introduced in 1994, the average number of teams to drop out of the eight from one season to the next is 3. Four finalists from 2001 didn't make the finals in 2002 (Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn, Sydney) and four came in (Collingwood, Melbourne, Kangaroos, Eagles). That happened from 2000 to 2001 as well.

And yet every year, the vast majority of predictions for the final 8 have only one, or at most two, teams dropping out.

So, what I want to know is: given the likelihood (historically) that three or four teams from the 2002 finals won't be there in 2003, who do you think they will be? And which teams will replace them?

Let's say, three likely drop-outs and one possible.

No "this year it won't happen, because the best eight teams are settled" (I heard that last year). No "how dare you put my team in, I'll bring this post up in September" (after all, it's just a prediction). Just give it a bash. Here's mine:

Out: Melbourne, Kangas and Essendon. Adelaide maybe. (Lord knows why, same bad hunch as last year I suppose).

In: Hawthorn, Bulldogs and Fremantle. St Kilda might.

(Last year I had Richmond, Carlton and Adelaide to drop, and Hawthorn as my possible, which isn't too bad. Can't recall who I thought would come in. I also had Sydney as a Grand Finallist, which is a bit embarrassing)

It's a good pick up Rodger and I'm glad you did the research, because I know I wouldn't have.

You can't blame people for basing their opinion on last year's performance. There are going to be potential moves downwards that seem fairly obvious (eg. Norf) and teams that should move up (eg. Hawks).

From there, it is really up to too many variables to make a call on a team performing above or below expectations.

Out: West Coast, Kangas <sniff><sob!>, Melbourne

In: Saints, Geelong, and ... err ... Kangas (wahoo - back in !)

(in is more likely to be Hawthorn or Richmond but since I picked both these teams to sack their coach I can't very well stick them in now)

:)

why are so many people writing off Essendon so easily?

Ive wondered this all season - I am expecting top 4. We werent that far away last season, yet I see so much improvement, or potential improvement, it isnt funny. Our injury list in 02 was at least 3rd worst, if not worst, in the league.

Or am I too one eyed?

out: collingwood, essendon, brisbane, west coast, port adelaide, adelaide, north melbourne and melbourne

in: the other eight, 70s fashion, saying stuff then saying "dude", the amish and steve irwin inflatable wedding gowns.

Since the average number to drop out is 3, but 4 have dropped out for the last 2 years, then to maintain the average only 2 will drop out this year

Out Melb Norf

In Hawks Someone.

People never predict the fortunes of their team with "we will have a bad run of injuries, and therefore we will drop 5-6 places", but teams do have bad runs of injuries, and rarely do supporters take into account those teams that had suffered a bad run of injuries the previous year.

Who is going to have a bad run with injuries this year?
