Player Watch #31: Josh Goater - re-signed until the end of 2026

I think the below is what most modern defences look like - one big gorilla, a more agile marking CHB, a couple athletes who run kick defend mark and a lockdown for the third tall / medium types. Probably a hot take to have B George in there but he has skill and can mark I do think it’s safer to develop him back there and he wasn’t horrible when he was (we also don’t need anymore medium forwards)

B: Goater, Dawson, Archer
HB: Hardeman, Whitlock, George

That backline is about 3 years away from being consistently good players barring injury.

George???

Taylor Garner was more durable and he was made of paper mache.

Agreed - that’s not for the now nor anything to hang hope on. We have no fix for this year unfortunately.. but we have to work towards that type of defence. No more 200cm blokes playing loose or tiny blokes who can’t defend. Everyone has to be able to defend and kick and be athletic.

Have to pick up one or two mature bodies to let those guys develop in the meantime

I actually want to see how Brayden George could partner with PC. He was drafted as a forward.

Yeah I know that just not sure how we fit all these guys in - George, PC, Duursma should all be playing in the same side in the future but can’t all fit up forward. I’d love to see how it would function as they’re all exciting forwards but there’s a lot of pieces to fit in not a lot of places up forward.

Those 3, a small pressure forward and 2 Keys. Seems a good balance to me, Harry rotating through

Struggling to find any updates on Goater. He should be close to returning?
Would love if we could get him up and running and at least 8+ games in the back end of the season.

Should be out for no more than 1-2 weeks then will play in the vfl before returning to the seniors. So l'm expecting Round 13 for the Weagles game..if his form warrants it..

Youngster Josh Goater has suffered a setback on his road to a return, having picked up a small quad strain during his reconditioning session over the weekend. He will re-load with running on Friday and build once again from there.

Bummer. Hopefully not too big of a setback. A week or 2.
