Autopsy 31 point loss to Collingwood

So, so, so much the bolded. I never want to hear about Amartey being useless again. He's our most important forward, I don't care what anyone says.
I agree. Amartey IS the forward line. Build it around him. McDonald comes in. When Amartey comes back get Ladhams the hell out of there. I am not sure about McLean, makes too many basic errors, like trying to take chest marks instead of marking in front of his face. Wil is a problem. Did not even get involved and when it is like this for him he stops chasing. He loses confidence.

We need a big midfield recruit kinda like Beisbane with Neale

This was before Neale was a brownlow calibre player

Turned their weak midfield into a top 4 one

I dont think our defence is the problem, its losing almost every centre bounce and field position

Dont want to see McLean in that side again. He’s hopeless, proves it week in week out. Yes kicked two goals, me from a ruck free kick and a Joe the goose and the back.
Ladhams is like a 200cm headless chook, Amarty, just wildly inconsistent.

So right here it’s obvious we have the 3 worst talls in the afl. Can’t take a grab, get bullied in ruck contests, what’s the point?

Florent again 0 impact, but let’s keep wheeling him out.
Hayward, big game so standard is he folds like a target deck chair.

Got to get games into Sheldrick and Cleary in the middle, Rowbottom a genuine battler, Warner playing mostly forward and we have a tagger in there so someone has to step up as a contested ball winner.
Yes Sheldrick poor disposal but he needs consistent games to get used to the speed on the AFL then his efficiency will improve.

All in all the same faces just proving they aren’t up to it when pressed by the better teams.
When denied the corridor, what’s plan B Cox?
I think Sheldrick's poor disposal is natural and won't get any better until someone takes him aside and does kicking drills under pressure with him.

I would put Blakey in the mids.

maybe bring in Buller as a second ruck/forward

But who replaces Rampe? Cunningham?

Interesting to see how Bowman goes next week.

Reserves don't play this week as it is the SAv Vic state games.

I think we never really looked 'on' from the opening bounce. All three areas of the team were pretty poor and the skills/ball handling issue seemed to become infectious amongst our players.

The positive is that we showed enough fight to keep at it. If this game happened in recent years it'd be a 60+ point loss.

Yep accuracy kept us in it too, but they didn't really drop their heads. The flat start in the second quarter was odd when everyone even Heeney looked lazy for a few minutes

Yer even when we closed within 2 goals just before HT we still didnt look likely given how easy it was them to score 4-5 in quick succession which what happened.

I dont think at this stage we can compete for 4 quarters against the upper top 8 of the teams, to many injuries not enough depth and just in general cant sustain the effort.

Pies i think will play finals but against top contenders we will get annihilated if we drop like we did in the 2nd.

I would argue that was the period that basically won Collingwood the game. They kicked 5 of 6 goals and we had a pressure rating in the 130s. I didn't really need Garry Lyon(?) to tell me that our pressure was shite in that 5-10 minute period. It was pretty obvious just watching.

But we've done the post-GF humiliation season before. We know how this goes. I think we will ultimately look very good sometimes and very bad sometimes, and those swings will happen from week to week, even quarter to quarter. It's gonna be frustrating AF and we'll have little choice but to just ride the ride.

I'd strongly consider leaving Ladhams there once McDonald returns. I think we need 3 keys there and we especially need a second ruck that can spend enough time in the ruck to protect Grundy.

Agree with McDonald for McLean though once Logan's fit enough though. The only alternative for mine is IF McLean can return to his 2023 contested marking form (big if because he's looked nowhere near that) then I'd leave him there and Ladhams would ideally play a few games to rest Grundy.

I liked the idea of a forward line with only 2 talls, but I think for that to be successful you need them to both be strong contested marks, otherwise it becomes too easy for opposition teams to double-team Amartey, as we've seen, and when Amartey has to ruck (or McDonald), we're kinda ****ed. If McDonald could find a way to improve in that area it would make a big difference.

But 100% Amartey is the most important factor to the success of our forward line.

Good post. I think we really just need to ride out the 2 months or so leading into the bye and try to go in with a positive win-loss ratio and go from there. I'm trying to keep my expectations at a minimum so if we can achieve that positive W-L ratio I'll be happy.

Positive is we started with a pressure rating of over 200 and maintained it for a 1.5 quarters then it dropped to 140 and we got scored against heavily.

I’m intrigued to know how they calculate the “pressure rating”.

I reckon sone dude just sits there and sticks an arbitrary number on screen, making it higher when there’s lots of stoppages and BT is yelling idiotic hyperbole.

Achieveable if we win all our home games.

So basically make Blakey's weaknesses exposed even more?

Buller would be worth a go, if he hadn't been unsighted for the most part in the last VFL match. Logan needs more time, so might have to at this stage. I don't think Ladhams and McLean will cut it for the next week or two. If Melican is back, can see us rolling Tmac forward again, but would prefer it's him, Melican and Hamling down back.

Bowman hasn't shown a lot so far, but early days coming back from injury.

IIRC its based on tackles/inside 50 tackles/spoils and 1 percenters.

Whatever it is it does have some correlation to how the game is progressing

Several factors go into the team rating. It's obviously not an exact measure.

You forgot our trump card Hamling forward

Our contests forward of the ball was a big let down watching back a bit of the replay.

Poor pressure, no service aerially and struggled to lock the ball in our forward half. Ball goes inside 50, hits the deck then straight back out from a well drilled Pies defence. Rebound and picked apart their loose options. Happened way too often.

I wouldn't be dropping Hamling, yes he got beaten a few times, but the ball basically spent 70% down there and I would blame Blakey more who contributed to the chaos.
