Autopsy 31 point loss to Collingwood

I think the major issue with tagging Daicos is the way he plays

Neale/Serong are ball chasers so a tagger can go with them at the coalface and win their own ball.
Daicos on the other hand, if he doesn't win the first ball, is quite happy to be the first or even second receiver and the tagger can get lost when they are still at the contest.

Against Daicos I think the tagger has to essentially forget the ball and just run everywhere with Naicos, otherwise he will lose the tagger in traffic.
You probably almost just concede Daicos gets 30 and just go head to head each contest
Nick ****ing Daicos - the best player in the comp according to to every Victorian commentator.
Hes very good, yes,, but is made look better with the elite support / footy nous of Sidebottom and Pendles.
A couple of years ago (maybe early last year?) every player that got near him, bumped him..it put him off his game. even his whinging coach complained.
Love the idea of a soft tag - Jordon.. with support from every player bumping him at every opportunity (surely he cant be awarded more than 5 free kicks!?).. and at an occasional random (to outwit Sidebottom & Pendles) stoppage set Heeney, Wicks, Warner, the task to absolutely smash him. Line him up, hit him hard.

U16 Grandfinal on North Sydney Oval my team was down by 5 try's.. We used the play 'Hit the c**t' and after legally smashing their two best 5/8s (both left the ground in pain) we came back to win.

Like Clarko said last week.. 'Its a big boys game'

That shits almost not his fault i guess is how I view it.

Anyway stuff him, he is great, not best in the comp though imo.

Would not swap Heeney for him regardless of their age and years left in the game. Its here and now. He has now added the false tough guy to his playbook which is all well and good until the next short step he takes in a heavy contest. His speed and ability to balance and hit a target could be difference in the last 30 seconds of a GF but so could his ability to shit himself with incoming heavy body contact.

The idea Daicos shits himself or is a squib is totally false imo.

Lets be real if he said get me to sydney we go make it happen

Our pressure drops off to badly to be considered a finalist challenger. I said it after the GF. Our main core of players have accepted taking a breather throughout games. Last year our stars put the foot down with some front running footy in bursts & it got us over the line in many games. But it wasn’t toughness & resilience but some flashy brilliance from 3 players. Warner, Heeney & Gukden. But they don’t defend they just front run.
Now no Gulden & Warner not in form which leaves Heeney to try & do it on his own but it’s not enough. We are no longer a quality TEAM but a collection of talented players at the top with a list that thin s out severely after the top 6 or 8 players.

Of course you would not take him. Instantly makes our midfield 100 percent better but if you don't think he shits himself regularly you are not watching him close enough. Short step, soft, shits himself all can be looked at differently and people's opinions will differ which is all good. For instance I wouldn't say Blakey shits himself but is he soft ? 100 percent he is.

When can we stop hearing this. I'm surprised we haven't heard the Ling stuff up in a while.

Genuinely like watching Serong play, but sometimes I hope he spontaneously combusts so that I don't have to hear about the fact that we should've picked him.
Word connect game that goes on in my head:

Zac Bailey - Matt Ling
Caleb Serong - Dylan Stephens

Trust me, I hate it too but I can't control it.......

Melbourne aside every team seems to have better marking forwards than us.

I think even Amarteys work is being a touch over sold this year , we really need more .

We also need McDonald to get fit and become the best version of himself

McDonald needs to grow a beard. Has worked wonders for his 2020 draft colleague, Thilthorpe.

I felt before the game that the biggest threat was the fact that the Pies , the oldest side to ever play the game, but with excellent talent, we're coming off an 8 day break, whereas we were coming off a 6 day break after travelling last week.Their old timers must have been
relishing this fact. And a side with so many veterans is going to almost coach itself to execute a game plan really well, which is what they did .

They certainly seemed sharp compared to our guys. It seemed to me that our veterans were struggling the most to recover. Rampe, Lloyd, and Grundy, especially early, was out of touch.

I'm not sure whether our preparation, too,was overly taxing or not, or whether the team caught Chad's virus, but we were certainly off the boil.

Likes

  • Heeney class
  • Sidebottom and pendles timeless
  • McLean was solid despite some drops

Dislikes

  • Out coached. Struggled to understand how we just let a team like Collingwood taken uncontested marks down the line without adapting our game plan. The great teams adapt
  • Contested marking..becoming an issue now, not the first time
  • If we can’t play the corridor often seems we look a little lost what to do
Solid despite drops? Thats McLeans job, catch the ball. He was putrid.

I think Sheldrick's poor disposal is natural and won't get any better until someone takes him aside and does kicking drills under pressure with him.

I would put Blakey in the mids.

maybe bring in Buller as a second ruck/forward

But who replaces Rampe? Cunningham?

Interesting to see how Bowman goes next week.

Reserves don't play this week as it is the SAv Vic state games.
I’d like to see him get a run of games, settle in and if his disposal is still poor then it’s prob not going to change drastically.

McClean moves like a Kenworth Road Train trying to do a three point turn. Relies on quick transition where he takes any marks he actually holds over the back. Almost looks like he gives up when ball goes to ground. One of Heeney's kicks to him last night was as lace out as you will see and he tries to take on the chest with his defender right on his hammer. Extend your arms out in front and at the very least he makes contact with your arm. Knowing our luck he doesn't get the free but that slab of concrete sitting on his shoulders is glaring. Serious lack of footy IQ playing at the highest level.

Welcome to the board , i enjoyed that

Disposal efficiency of our mids on Friday:

Rowy 59%
Ladhams 60%
Grundy 65%
Chad 66%
Campbell 66%
JJ 69%
Corey 69%
Heeney 75%
Gus 77%
Cleary 79%

Sheldrick’s kicking was a bit ordinary early in the season. But on Friday, he was good & our problems lay elsewhere.

Bice and Florent topped the charts at circa 90%. Both higher than I’d anticipated.

Great summation.

I've just watched the replay and tried to avoid all news until then. (So I haven't read any other comments.)

I thought it was a good game of footy where we got touched up by a team that were better on the day. Collingwood's experience in particular told, I thought, as well as their ferocity and class. I didn't think it was our skills letting us down so much as us implementing the structures wanted by the coaches - and that's on the coaches at least as much as the players.

Heeney was our best player by miles. He's an unbelievably good player. So balanced! Great at all aspects of the game rather than being the best at any one thing.

Braeden Campbell was solid but didn't take his chances as well as he might have (including a couple of shots at goal) but overall I think he's having a really good season. Little by little looking more confident at the level and I think the improvement will keep coming.

Corey Warner had the best game I've ever seen from him. He's also reaping the benefits of a run of games and acclimatising to AFL level footy.

Hanily and Bice were both great.

I thought Rowbottom had a better game than Chad, although neither really stood up. Nor did Olly or Wilba or Dane or the Lizard or Grundy or McCartin. All were solid but none gave quite enough for us to triumph. Only Heeney really shone from our more senior players.

We didn't get much out of our forwards. McLean's first goal was a gimme (but his second was better). Amartey obviously injured early but hadn't done much to that point. Will be good when Logan returns but he isn't the answer. I think McCartin will play forward next week and hopefully Melican can come in to stiffen our defence. If Melican isn't ready then it will be trickier.
