Mccartin forward won't change much imo

Agree. But we can't just replace Amartey with McInerney. Or could we? I think we need some taller, bigger bodies to help our structure and bring the ball to ground - otherwise we will be a little bit to predictable if we never bomb it in and then the oppo's defenders will be able to press right up and we'll never get anywhere.

McCartin is the biggest competitor out of all the talls up forward. He would at least bring the ball to ground and then have 2nd efforts
We needed more of that against the pies.. Got out marked far to often

I thought a lot was poor delivery.

I don't mind Mccartin leading up the ground, just not sure he is clunking contested marks in the forward line , and he is more effective in defence imo. Need to be able to kick forward.

Not sure where we go next week. Guessing Mcdonald isn't ready or Melican and now Amartey out.

Maybe we do just go one less tall?

I agree that McCartin is likely to go forward
Melican was a test last week, so should be good to go this week, freeing up McCartin
McDonald may come back in to replace Amartey.. maybe even Hamling plays (or rotates) forward. He took a lot of fwd 50 marks last year in the vfl

I think Ladhams and McLean play the same 2nd ruck role and theres prob only room for one of them. If Amartey wasn't injured and Melican or McDonald are available, one of the 2nd rucks may miss out. Wouldn't be surprised if one misses out regardless
Also think Lloyd and Roberts play the same - lack one on one defensive, safe half back distributers, lack leg speed.
JMac will come back to a wing/half back flank, so Lloyd or Florent could be pushed back.
Roberts lack of leg speed and one on one defensive is a concern. He may be pushed out. Cunningham isn't far away either.

Mostly agree with that but I don't think Roberts is in danger of being dropped. Wouldn't mind him being given a bit of time onball in the midfield though.

I think we must face reality, we choke on the big stage and in big games. Against top sides we just seem to falter nearly every time. Good for a half then drop off a cliff. Midfield has been broken for years. No new voices in the coaching box. Persisting with average/honest toilers like Florent, Hayward, McClean etc

Gulden and Mills ain't going to magically make us a top 4 side. I hope we have the guts to get some fresh voices in the coaches box with new ideas and move on some players who are not part of our next premiership.

we need more clean centre clearances and McLean is a nullifying second ruck who does absolutely nothing in terms of hit outs to advantage nor when the ball is in dispute.

Although ruck is not the be all and end all for centre clearances, I’d be more confident of us winning more of them with Ladhams there so he gets the nod over McLean for me

Port don’t have a huge forward line so if Melican isn’t ready, will Cox do the unthinkable and debut Snell and move Mccartin forward if Melican is not fit?

At least Mccartin can mark the ****ing thing.

Edwards played pretty well in the vfl last week too.. anyone but Francis
If Melican was a test for gather round, he should be good to go v Port.. Still wouldn't mind seeing how Snell or Edwards look

you're prob right.. but Roberts was dropped last year for 4-5 games.
I think Roberts lack of leg speed is a real disadvantage to him, in the midfield as well. Parkers skills, toughness, endurance etc were all very good, but we saw last year his speed really drop off and he would get left behind at the contest.
Roberts speed and endurance aren't up to scratch

Yeah interesting one, because part of me think Roberts could be the big bodied kid we need in clearances, but yeah is he a step too slow?

Im thinking Mills will be that - did that job very well in 2022
Was good to see Gus play his best game, getting better with each run this year. 6 tackles, 1 clearance, 13 possessions (half contested) @ 77% efficiency, 1 goal and all in 38% game time.. looked pretty good

We miss Mills so much, his 2021-2023 patch was so good

I've just watched the replay and tried to avoid all news until then. (So I haven't read any other comments.)

I thought it was a good game of footy where we got touched up by a team that were better on the day. Collingwood's experience in particular told, I thought, as well as their ferocity and class. I didn't think it was our skills letting us down so much as us implementing the structures wanted by the coaches - and that's on the coaches at least as much as the players.

Heeney was our best player by miles. He's an unbelievably good player. So balanced! Great at all aspects of the game rather than being the best at any one thing.

Braeden Campbell was solid but didn't take his chances as well as he might have (including a couple of shots at goal) but overall I think he's having a really good season. Little by little looking more confident at the level and I think the improvement will keep coming.

Corey Warner had the best game I've ever seen from him. He's also reaping the benefits of a run of games and acclimatising to AFL level footy.

Hanily and Bice were both great.

I thought Rowbottom had a better game than Chad, although neither really stood up. Nor did Olly or Wilba or Dane or the Lizard or Grundy or McCartin. All were solid but none gave quite enough for us to triumph. Only Heeney really shone from our more senior players.

We didn't get much out of our forwards. McLean's first goal was a gimme (but his second was better). Amartey obviously injured early but hadn't done much to that point. Will be good when Logan returns but he isn't the answer. I think McCartin will play forward next week and hopefully Melican can come in to stiffen our defence. If Melican isn't ready then it will be trickier.
About right. Pies protected Naicos really well to allow him to escape JJ. An object lesson in how that is done. We played nervous. Worst games I can remember from Florent (others will differ), Hayward, Rampe, Lloyd where the younger guys played up to their ability a lot better. We got killed on the wings and flanks which is supposed to be a strength. Out coached I'm guessing.
The real disappointment was the lack of devil in so many.
Coaches votes will probably only have Heeney.

Maybe we can protect Heeney a bit more .

Who coaches 3 of our guys going up for the same mark and spoiling each other every time ?

Should be a droppable offence.

Neanderthal strategy.
It's panicking and a lack of trust in your team mates. Especially when Collingwood were clunking every one on one, players felt that they had to fly for everything.

Bad mark? No he isn’t.

But either way not in love with the move, but at least did something, I think the problem was in the middle though , needed a move there, Blakey midfield, Cleary, Hayward f knows. Something

I agree about the middle, but I think the McCartin forward experiment is just an embarrassment. It’s obvious that TMac isn’t and will never be even a mediocre forward and it’s painful that our coach seems determined to turn him into one.

I don’t think he’s a good mark at all. He’s decent at uncontested intercepts, but that’s about all.
