Player Watch #39 Mate Colina - delisted

What a colossal waste of time, money and resources that was.

Find an Irish kid or a cricketer if were going to look at more long shot cat Bs, as long as they're mids or flankers. No more 7 foot basketballers please.

Got to be one of the most amazing non careers at RFC ever. 5 years (approximately 110 games) for a total of 0 games.

Didn't we bring two of them in? And one - Hayes-Brown - is doing perfectly well enough. The other got destroyed by injuries.

Mason Cox, a 7ft basketballer who would not have even know Aussie Rules existed until his early 20's has ripped a couple of finals apart.

Tylar Young, a tall soccer convert is now holding down a spot in our team and looking good.

There is a time for every strategy. We cast the net wide with some hail Marys for tall players when our cupboard was looking bare. Blight, Young, Lefau, Fawcett, Koschitzke, Ryan, Hayes-Brown, Colina. Before that, Miller. If we end up with 2-3 useful best 22 or depth players out of all these speculative low cost picks, or get some good trade returns, the strategy will have worked out fine for us.

If you're happy with 'perfectly well enough' I guess.....

We could've just drafted a young ruckman and got better results. The juice is hardly worth the squeeze.

Young wasn't a cat B and was drafted out of the VFL. Not the same.

That's a record I'd guess. Pretty solid achievement by the big Mate

Stop thinking using a portfolio view. You can only judge success one thing at a time obviously.

If you look overall and see a few successes in a portfolio of cheap picks that's the wrong approach.

Just get with the program man!

Speculative picks can be justified somewhat when you are up and flying, like we were from 2017-2020/21, but it's a narrow view.
The good times don't last forever and these sorts of picks hurt you long term.
Most on here have agreed we need to find a replacement for Nank and have done so for two or three years.
We are right now no closer to finding a replacement or cover for Nank than we were two or three years ago, while we've been hoping and praying on a long shot getting up.

Yes and no.

If you carefully create a portfolio of long shots in positions where you can get bang for buck (mostly ruck) you pay a small price to get the odd success. Given that the alternative (you carry these lists spots anyway) is a player in a position that is easy to fill with someone of good quality, it's easy to see why the club would try to get another Soldo. These guys aren't elite rucks, but can provide you with a solid option in an important position.

Using Cat B or very late picks on more speculative types is worth it if you 1) use a portfolio approach (take a bunch of picks knowing most will fail, but overall there is a decent chance of a good success) and 2) put the resources into development and are patient. So if you have a strategy and stick to it, no problem. Every once in a while it gives you another piece to the puzzle. Otherwise you just ty to pick the next most likely, after all of the likely guys have been taken for 'normal' positions like mids, HBF etc.

Soldo had actually played footy before though hadn't he? Colina was a basketballer in Hawaii that happened to be related to Balta
He must've thought the girls would put 2 and 2 together. He's 211cm. Things are probably in proportion

Think it was the other way around. Colina had played footy, maybe even been involved with TAC Cup? Soldo I am not sure had ever touched a footy prior to age 19.
Soldo played TAC cup with the northern knights, Colina played basketball in Hawaii. That’s how their footy journeys started lol

Threads like this just show me that some people here seem to relish in the failures of players, being happy to see someone get delisted.
He was a free list spot, unless we have another long shot project we want to take on from outside the AFL, who will go through the same development challenges Mate did, then we cannot replace him with another player.

Glad he had a crack, which is a lot more than some of the keyboard warriors taking cheap shots on this forum.

I'm happy to see him delisted.

He has claims to be the worst player ever drafted, and our list balance was way out of whack with all these talls. Not to mention we kept him around for 5 years when it was obvious to anyone with eyes 2 years ago that he was no good.

Nothing personal, but I'm glad to see the back of him.
