I wonder when our team will realise the game has moved on and new tactics are required.

We need to play a style and select a squad that can comfortably generate a run a ball type cricket.

That's the point. Agar doesn't have a test 99 for nothing, the kid can really bat. If the top order goes ape shit he's the sort to maintain the momentum until the end. If they fail he's bloody good insurance down the order. And his spin bowling balances the attack.

And more importantly, Agar is lucky, the way Gilchrist was. Which makes him really useful in clutch situations. He's got an excellent temperament, obviously very confident but he's very lucky too. No-one can have performed the way he has under numerous tight situations for WA in all forms without that sort of luck.

I wonder when we will get a captain and coach that realises SOME tactics are required, not just bowling short and wide and hoping they will get out. Getting a captain with some feel for the game so he can understand what is happening and what to do about it would also help.

Getting bowlers to stop bowling short and wide down leg side would be a good start.

Having a bowling plan on a slow pitch like having strong fields straight, bowling just outside off stump and forcing the batsmen to play square to get runs would be a great plan A. Pity we didn't do that instead of bowling short and wide and watching the ball go to the fence time and again.

A captain with a clue would have won us that game. We didn't have that.

Agar is maturing at a rate of knots and actually bowling very productively - that said, Lyon should be playing every match.

Absurd that the world's best bowler, and that's what he was in 2017/18 - can't get a look into a side that has no top flight spinning option.

the issue is Lyon has had problems in the past going ODI->test, in that his action deteriorates and he starts bowling darts in Tests.

i got worried when Lehmann was complaining England are copying our gameplan.

You mean the game plan where you go hard early, consolidate and then push in the last 10 overs?

Pretty sure the Sri Lankans came up with that one in 1996...

NZ actually invented the concept of the opening pinch-hitter in 1992 with Mark Greatbach, interestingly enough. One could argue that the Sri Lankans just built upon their idea by having two aggressive batsmen rather than one.

was it the Agar and whitmen that was saving WA from capitulation few years ago?

Think Agar needs consistency and probably needs a season where he really dominates with the bat and ball and both levels. He seems to have one good year with the ball, then the following year with the bat.

What an odd post. Consistently performing in clutch situations is the opposite of luck.

Yes, it was.

I've said he has an excellent temperament but a fair bit of luck goes into it too. There's nothing wrong with having fortune shine on you.

I expect at some point that he will play all formats for Aus.

we don't have alot of experience with spinning all-rounders but for mine, if he had the same opportunities as Mitch Marsh we would have more to show for it.

He'll need to force his way into the short format teams. I hope he can. He's a good fielder as well as all the other whistles and bells.

He's young, he'll keep getting better, spin bowling is one of the dark arts of cricket, especially in this country. Indians develop quickly with it as it's so respected as a skill, it's not like that in Aus. Look at the wickets these guys play on in Shield.

And do explain how he is in any way "luckier" on field than any other player? :drunk:
