No actually Eddie is correct for once and is actually not looking after his own club interests on this one. The VFL was a breakaway competition from the VFA not a continuation of it. The VFL continued after the breakaway and provided a further 4 clubs to the VFL who under this plan wouldn't be allowed to recognize their VFA Premiership won after 1896.

To suggest the AFL started in 1870 is to completely rewrite history and ignore the history of the VFA and its role in the history of Australian Football.

We can and do count the VFA premiership for what they are and the competition for which they were won, but to suggest they're Premierships won in the same competition is wrong and misleading history wise. I'm happy to say we have 5 VFA Premiership and 5 VFL/AFL Premiership, not 10 Premierships from the one competition.

Good luck with getting the Cup back. Got melted down at Cash Converters to build the Norf war chest.

That would be a big joke. You can't wipe the 100 year celebrations for 1996 from history because...

do we then go change norths gold cup back?

This.

Its ham fisted. The VFL/AFL isn't the VFA. Do we ask Port Melbourne and Williamstown if they want to join the AFL next to celebrate the league they helped create and carry once we all bolted? Insulting really

Port Melb into the AFL would be interesting...

The record books should be split imo. Nothing pre-1990 should count as AFL history.

Get a little peeved that VFL history is preserved in the AFL record books but SANFL/WAFL history isn't counted as 'AFL history'. VFL wasn't that much stronger than the other two at the time, surely?

Ken Farmer would be renowned for having the most goals of all time instead of being a relatively obscure name, for example.

1990 was only a name change, your argument would have merit if the different state leagues merged that year but they didn’t they continued and still do. The VFL/AFL doesn’t have the right to include or exclude history that isn’t part of their league for their benefit.

To exclude VFL history from before 1990 because they changed their name means that by your reasoning the Swans history from before 1982 should be as well.

It doesn’t work like that. The VFL continued as the AFL and not all three leagues merging where historical records can be disputed. End of the day there is a clear start date for the league and a clear time line. To in history of other leagues would be of a disservice to them and be rewriting history.

**** i agree with eddie,

ill be committing myself now
i believe I held this view before I read this, so I am thinking Eddie actually agrees with me. Its about time he started to come around to some decent thinking.

Agreed. It has to commence when the AFL started otherwise you have to also include Freos and Ports premierships. I can't get over the self-centredness of Victorians in the AFL
