Skipper wins appeal

Nick Maxwell was cleared by the AFL Appeals Board on Friday 20 February
Collingwood's captain Nick Maxwell's four-match ban for rough conduct has been thrown out by the AFL Appeals Board.

It means Maxwell will be able to play in Collingwood's next NAB Cup match against Richmond next Thursday and will not miss any games in either the pre-season or home-and-away rounds.
The appeals board has given no reason for the verdict yet, and are expected to release a statement later today.
Maxwell had been cited for a heavy hip and shoulder on West Coast's Patrick McGinnity during their NAB Cup clash on February 7, which left the young Eagle with a broken jaw.
But the AFL Tribunal's decision to find Maxwell guilty on Tuesday night had polarised the football community, with many suggesting it would spell an end to the hip-and-shoulder in the modern game.
The three-man appeals board listened to one hour and 15 minutes of evidence on Friday morning, in which Collingwood's advocate Terry Forrest QC argued Maxwell had no reasonable alternative but to make contact with McGinnity.
Maxwell said he was relieved he was free to play, and wished McGinnity well in a recovery which will take at least 12 weeks.
"I feel great that we've been vindicated in this," Maxwell said of Collingwood's decision to fight his case.
"I'd also like to wish Patrick McGinnity all the best in his recovery and hope he comes back and has a long and distinguished AFL career."
It is the first time in 11 cases brought before the Appeals Board since the new AFL tribunal system was introduced in 2005 that an appeal has been upheld and a tribunal verdict set aside.
Forrest successfully argued that if Maxwell had taken the option of putting his head over the ball rather than bumping McGinnity, it could have resulted in serious injury to both players, as well as Collingwood's Anthony Corrie, who was nearby.
"We say it is unrealistic in those circumstances, considering a player has a duty of care to the players around him, to put his head over the ball in the particular circumstances," Forrest told the appeals board.
"Putting his head over the ball with Corrie and McGinnity coming like a freight train is not asking him to execute a realistic alternative.
"It was a situation fraught with injury if Maxwell was required to put his head over the ball."
Forrest also said the option of Maxwell pulling out of the contest was not a reasonable one.
He suggested dodging a contest was not in the spirit of the game, and also wondered how a player could explain that sort of decision to a coach - in this case Collingwood's Mick Malthouse.
"That is not our game. 'I'm a tenth of a second away from impact, I'll pull out of this. Sorry Mick'," Forrest told the panel.
After less than five minutes of deliberation, the panel of Peter O'Callaghan QC, Brian Collis QC and retired Victorian Court of Appeal president John Winneke emerged to give their decision.
"It is of our opinion the appeal should be upheld. We'll publish our reasons later," appeals board chairman O'Callaghan said.

It has been a tumultuous first game and following fortnight for Nick Maxwell as Collingwood Captain.

Thanks Snag for posting the great news below.

Firstly I would like to thank all the opposition club's supporters who made the time to post their support for Maxwell and Collingwood in their appeal.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Secondly to thank our board members for showing their support on our board but especially on the main board. Rarely is a victory over the Trolls so conclusive and sweet.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Lastly to those few Pies "supporters" who took time to attack both Maxwell and the Club, here is something I think is pertinent;

From the great Bob Dylan.

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you gota helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

You know who you are.......:thumbsd::thumbsd:

A brilliant and fitting selection, Pie Eyed. I can hear Dylan in my head. But the Youtube would be good here too.

And yes, it was good to have so many non-Collingwood barrackers standing side by side with us on this one.

Collingwood Captain Nick Maxwell will play his 100th game for the Collingwood Football Club in Monday nights match against St Kilda.
Congratulation to Nick and I hope he can mark the milestone with a win...:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I have been very remiss (slack) in keeping his thread updated, but have a litany of excuses with Nick being suspended and myself having been ill for a fair while, consequently meaning I have been flat out at work catching up.

I swear I will lift my game.:D

Just wanted to give some credit where it is due.

He is a very impressive captain from an opposition perspective.

I have hard him interviewed about three times (the first of which was on footy classified) and each time he was very god to listen to. No cliches but still gave honest and responsible answers.

I will admit that I didn't believe it when I first found out that he was to be captain. But I will admit that I can understand why he was the one chosen after listening to him speak.

Collingwood FC have taken the initiative to organise the opportunity for supporters to "chat" with Nick Maxwell.
Nick's first chat was yesterday after training and Optimax took the opportunity to ask Maxy a question along with plenty of others.

The thread on our board ...here.

Nick has obviously made a conscious effort to concentrate on Captancy and has made very few media appearances.
There si very little in the way of coverage of either his personal performance or performance as the Captain.

I am sure this a good thing as normally if Max was doing anything wrong we would be reading about it ad nauseum.

Below is a link to Nick's radio interview after the Swans game.

I'll have to do another Wallpaper to put some colour in this thread.
Trouble is they are not even taking Pics of the man.

Collingwood Coach Mick Malthouse has had a bit to say about our Captain on the Pies website this week after our tough win over the old enemy.

Maxwell 'as good as any'

Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell salutes the crowd after the win

> Watch Mick Malthouse address the media after the win

MICK Malthouse has lauded Nick Maxwell for his courage and says the Collingwood captain is leading his team as well as anyone he has seen in his time coaching.

Maxwell was among the Magpies’ best in their convincing 54-point win over Carlton at the MCG on Friday night, a win that further consolidated Malthouse’s side in the AFL’s top four.

But after the match the coach revealed his skipper, who had earlier displayed a couple of trademarks acts to deprive the Blues scoring opportunities on a night when goals were at a premium, had played hurt.

> Watch Leon Davis speak to CTV in the rooms after the win

“Nick was very, very brave to be out there tonight,” Malthouse said in his post-match press conference.

“I can assure you, without telling you what injury he has, he was terrific.”

The veteran coach refused to divulge the exact nature of the injury, and also declared Maxwell was fine to continue playing otherwise he “wouldn’t be out there”.

And one suspects Malthouse thinks Maxwell’s presence could be crucial in determining just how far his team could progress this season – given how highly he spoke of his leader.

“I think one of those sayings is that when you get [given] leadership, don’t change, well, I don’t think that’s necessarily right,” he said.

“I think you’ve got to do a lot of things different when you become the main player, in this case a club captain.

“And he [Maxwell] took a lot of those things with him that he did previously and joined on the things that he needed to do to become a captain,” Malthouse said.

“So he’s fulfilling a lot of those requirements, he’s leading as well as I’ve seen anyone lead a football side.

“He mightn’t have the charisma or the ball-getting power that a few of the captains have had, but he’s certainly as respected as anyone I’ve seen in the short time which is terrific.”

One suspected the Magpies coach felt as relieved as much as he did pleased with the four points after his team had kicked clear in the final term to win 14.10 (94) to 4.16 (40).

> Watch the team sing the song after the win

All eyes were on the Pies following last week’s disappointing loss to Hawthorn, and Malthouse was proud of the way his young side responded.

“We were taken to the cleaners last week,” he said.

“You know, we’re still a developing side in many respects … [coming off a] six-day break, I guess it was better to get back on the horse as quick as we could.

“We did a lot of things right. We did a lot of things wrong but we did the majority of things right, which we needed to do.”

Captain brave

By Mic Cullen 1:17 PM Fri 07 August, 2009
COLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse says rookie skipper Nick Maxwell has "exceeded expectations" in his first season in the role.

Maxwell took over from the retired Scott Burns and his appointment came as something of a surprise to the AFL community.

But Malthouse said the match committee was certain they had selected the right man for the job.

"I've got to say he's exceeded my expectation – I recommended him, well, we recommended him as a match committee to the board, but he's gone beyond that," Malthouse said on Friday.

"He's changed – he was brave, now he's become braver.

at first i thought maxwell was a horrible choice as captain, thought he had a pea heart and was a sniper, HE HAS PROVED ME WRONG. he has displayed great courage - WELL DONE

gotta love that play from half back, one of the best bits of play I've seen this year from any Collingwood player

Modest Maxie denies "elite" Tag.

Maxwell would not budge when challenged about his declaration he was not among the game's elite, despite his selection in the All-Australian team. ''I understand that, but you can have a good year and be All-Australian. I'm still a long way off some of the best players … so I want to keep working on it.''

Once again Maxwell's words betray his humble greatness.

Congratulation to Nick Maxwell on All Australian selection.

Nick Maxwell wins the R.T.Rush Trophy.

090930_C_2nd%28246%29b.jpg

Nick Maxwell polled 48 Copeland Trophy votes to finish second to a deserved winner in Dane Swan(57 votes) to win the R.T.Rush Trophy.
In what has been a stellar first year as Captain, Nick also tied with Heath Shaw to share the Bob Rose Trophy for Best Player in the Finals and also won the Gavin Brown Award for leading desire indicators for the third straight year.
Add these achievements to his All Australian selection and of course the greatest honour of all, The Collingwood Football Club Captaincy, and it really has been a most extraordinary year for Nick.

Congratulations Nick and here's hoping for another step forward next year.

Player review: 5. Nick Maxwell

2009 season
It was an extremely impressive season for Nick Maxwell, who took the reins from Scott Burns as the Collingwood skipper. After a shaky start to the season which saw Maxwell miss rounds four and five through suspension (rough conduct), the 26-year-old played in the final 20 matches of the year and was a standout in September. He relished his new role down back, playing as a loose man in defence, which led to and average of four more possessions a game than in 2008 (13.4 in 2008 and 17.9 in 2009).

Skipper ties the knot

091021_maxy_2.jpg

Nick and Erin Maxwell were married last weekend

In front of 150 close family and friends, Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell tied the knot with his longtime partner Erin last weekend at the picturesque Gurragawee retreat, located in the surrounds of the Byron Bay Hinterland.

Congrats to Nick and his missus.

Article in the Herald Sun today. 20-11-09

"That was just luck (he doesn't say whether it was good or bad luck). It just fell to me, then I got swamped. Got a cheapie (free kick) and then turned it over with with my first kick, which wasn't great.
"Nick Maxwell came up to me after the game and gave me a few words of advice and wished me good luck.
"I can't really remember what he said, something like, `Well done, work hard, good luck'. He'd been into me all day.

Thought it was pleasant reading. I do get into Maxwell a bit, but I do admire and respect the way he goes about it.:thumbsu::)

Maxwell carries on where he left off.

Maxie started 2010 the way he finished 2009, leading from the front and inspiring belief in the boys. Maxwell had a fantastic first season as Captain, impressing supporters, foe and detractors alike. I don't think I can remember any player giving so many sceptics reason to openly admit he had changed their minds regarding both his ability and credentials as a Captain in such a short time. Maxie is arguably the best Captain in the competition at the moment and has the opportunity to cement that spot over the coming weeks.
(No point arguing that point here....:D)
Despite being truly a rock in defence Maxwell was shaded by Harry in what would rank as his best game for the side to date.

All eyes will be on Melbourne next week, with the Dee's keen to earn some credibility and pride after a disappointing first round belting at the hands of Hawthorn.
No doubt they will come out as physically as they can with the few mature bodies they have at their disposal and Maxie will be one who will need to weather the storm.

I'm sure Maxie would agree that Sunday was one win and nothing to get carried away about. That said it was an important win in regard to getting a good start and building both momentum and belief within the side.
Our brief stint "under the radar" has come to an end and the serious business of ensuring a top 4 finish continues.

In Maxwell we Trust.

Our Fearless Captain is still quietly, efficiently controlling the back half and doing so with little fanfare. A trio of 50+ point wins has thrown up a litany of BOG performances from a range of players but Maxie has been consistently in the top 5 all year. Any win over Carlton is welcome but this one was especially so.

Nick was happy to accept the Dick Pratt trophy from his widow.
