Not a big fan of SEN due to Gerard and Cornes but I do like listening to Hoyney, ever other week he’ll point out something damming about North, he’s not a dick about it just very matter of fact. The stat tonight which tales129 posted was so depressing, ranked 18th, 17th, 18th, 18th, 18th & 18th defensively across the last six years. It’s diabolical. NOTHING HAS CHANGED in six years. NOTHING.

The thing is every AFL team gets the same stuff from Champion Data so we’d be well aware of these stats and still NOTHING HAS CHANGED. It’s not like the Premier League where teams use their own IP, which gives clubs like Brighton and Brentford an advantage and allows them to punch above their weight, we have access to the data and we’re either ignoring it, not doing anything to address it or our players are so incompetent they can’t execute what they’re being told because, dare I say it again, NOTHING HAS CHANGED in six years.

The one thing Hoyney has said repeatedly this year is speed of ball movement wins you games, I can’t remember our exact position it’s either last or second last. Which is another thing that we’d be well aware of but again are either doing nothing about or too incompetent to execute.

Suffice to say there’s not much point getting Hoyney or someone in from Champion Data unless we’re going to act on the information they provide us.

Well we should get one of them on the team.

I know you're being facetious but the way Hoyney talks about the game trends, what the best teams are doing and how it wins them games it's staggering how incompetent in these areas. We would definitely benefit from someone like him consulting us (cue Glenn Luff jokes).

Listening to Simmo on AFL360 he just explains everything so clearly and simply something that I don't think I've heard Clarko do once in his tenure, really breakdown a game plan or opposition tactics. Yes he's probably doing it behind closed doors however the longer he continues in his role the more convinced I am that his best, particularly tactically, is well behind him.

Simmo didn’t do it when he was paid to coach a club either.

Watching this now. Some sketchy notes:

Leigh Adams - no major tactical tweaks in midfield. Improvement in our craft
Leigh - been able to defend ground better since Round 5 or 6. Need to improve connection with mids and forwards. Need to get more inside 50s.
Leigh - defensive pressure. Ability to pressure around context, in close. Pretty good forward of the footy. Letting us down lately, failed tackles. Issue of turning the ball over
This f*cking kills me, it has been our achilles heel for 6+ years and like so many other issues nothing has changed in that time.

I am Les.

I like Simpson too. Ex North captain, dual premiership player, 300 games, beat Collingwood in GF 7 years. That's a full resume.

Thing is, he didn't do too well at WC after that. And I suspect Clarkson, if you could deal with the "ummms", would probably sit there and do the same under no pressure on TV and radio.

I don't know if Clarkson is capable anymore, but what we need is someone setting trends. No good following, you'll always be behind.

Which leads to the next question. Where do our issues ultimately lie?

Poor coaching/game plan?
Poor drafting?
Poor recruiting from other teams?
Poor development?
A bit of everything?

Do the skills kill any game plan? Are the poor skills due to players not being confident in what they're doing? Are the players just no good? Would the players be better in another system?

So many questions.

Hit & Miss Talent Identification (Draft & Recruiting) > (Historically) Poor Player Development > Below Standard AFL Skills > Inability To Execute (Preferred) Game Plan > Inadequate Game Plan > Poor Coaching > Angry Big Footy

For me it's as simple as standards.

We will forever be no good if the Simpkins, LDUs Sheezels, Powells, Logues, Zurhaars keep watching as their opponents burn them back to goal and choose not to chase.

I don't claim to have any coaching nous, but I've argued since Boomer was long in the tooth, a coach needs to regularly drop players who refuse to chase. It especially applies to senior players, and needs to take into account their years in the system and endurance. But for f*** sake, set a standard and enforce it consistently.

A lot falls back on to the Dorothy Dix questions the journos ask at the Pressers.

It’s like AI robots are sent there to ask questions

Here’s one for this week that should be asked-

“It’s been highlighted this week that Colby Mk over uses the ball at times. Whilst encouraging him to take the game on, what coaching strategies do you implement to improve his, and the teams transitional disposal?”

Instead we will get-

“Larkey likely to come up this week Clarko?”

I had zero expectations regarding the quality and incisiveness of the questions asked, and was still very disappointed. Presumably, any member question of any genuine interest wasn't asked. And I may have misread his facial expression, but Nick didn't look like he wanted to be there.

Personally, I would have liked to ak Nick "Why do you rarely lead at the ball carrier?" but I was sure it wouldn't have made the cut.

These things always only result in softball questions getting aired. Mind you I can't complain as I did not submit a question.

It only works at events where supporters can ask off the cuff questions from the floor but clubs really shut down opportunities for this nowadays.

This is the thing that gets me, how about these journos do their jobs for once and ask some hard questions instead of bowling up half track rubbish every week.

He gets no real scrutiny and ends up talking about the opposition half the time anyway.

It’s not just him; it’s all of the on the ground journos while at the other end we have the Opinion Makers creating faux outrage

You know the club has failed again this year as soon as the term “silver bullet” is mentioned.

That means you are praying for a miracle to happen and are unsure of when the form of the side will turn.

It’s just hopes and prayers right now.

They’re just counting down the days until the offseason when they can kick start the new ‘hope’ campaign and reel out the whole spiel ‘oh our young blokes are a year older, more familiar with the system and structures, running harder than before, Northball’ etc etc.

Sad state to be in and I suppose we just await Sonia’s email on the eve of our last game!
