I was just thinking today about what a Collingwood side in 5 years from now would look like. Obviously with the likes of Bucks Burns Clement and pebs gone it is going to be a rather different lineup. I've had a crack at what i believe our side will be, leaving a few positions open with question marks for what i hope will be taken by future draft picks. Here goes....

B: Anthony Brown Johnson

HB: O'Brien Cox R.Shaw

C: Thomas Swan H.Shaw

HF: Egan Cloke Reid

F: Maxwell Rusling(?) Didak

R: Fraser Pendlebury ????(recruit) No burns OB Licca

Int: Dick ???(RUCKMAN PLEASE!!) ???? ????

This leaves Dawes, Goldsack, Toovey, Illes and Medda on the sidelines

Im presuming that Davis Lonie and Richards have been sent packing and our older blokes have hung the boots up. I really believe the pies have a bright future, better then ever, and the only way is up.
A few queries ppl might have are

Egan- Has the x factor about him, great skill good hands and i believe the ability to win us finals

Jonno and Rhyce- Both will have hit the 30 mark in 5 yrs and will be of great assistance down back where they started their careers.

Reid- The interesting one, tough to know where he will play at this stage but looks a potential gun, im hoping in an Adam Goodes role.

In summing this up the side is fairly tall but possesses lots of pace and more importantly a ton of ability. Love to hear peoples personal thoughts and own sides. Thanks.

Ps- The lineup across the middle i can just imagine... tommo swanny n heater!

Good team but I don't think ???? can make it as a player. Too many question marks about him.

I think it would look something like this.

B: Lockyer Maxwell Cox

HB: H.Shaw Cloke R.Shaw

C: Thomas Reid Johnson

HF: Egan Brown Didak

F: Rusling(?) Dawes Dick(?) Medhurst(?)

R: Fraser Pendlebury Swan

Anthony H-Bomb Clarke Judd Goldsack Toovey Wellingham

The more scary thought than that is it will improve more considering there is about 15 new players to rotate through the list, who to replace?
That would be the biggest and one of the quicker teams in the AFL. That side would just smash teams through size alone. It would be unstoppable.

I think we should be perfectly clear about a few things. The odds of 50%, maybe 60%+, of our current list being still there in 5 years is remote. The average career is just over 3 years. We have a lot of players nearing the end. There are doubts over numerous players due to injury and exposed form/ability. Our success in 5 years will depend more on how we drafted in 2006 and how we draft in the next 2 years. Even then we have to get better at trading. If Josh Fraser is our ruckman in 5 years we are kidding ourselves about winning a premiership.

This is how I would look at it.
Players that I would earmark as probably vital to a premiership assault in 5 years:
Didak
H. Shaw
Thomas
Johnson
Swan
Pendlebury (still not 100% certain)
Cloke (maybe)

The rest are up for sale or retirement apart from the untried and unproved draftees/early gamers who may me superstars in the making or cannon fodder.

If we are to rebuild that is a realistic view. If we think tinkering can get us their then that requires a different approach but IMO we went passed tinkering to a flag 2 years ago.

Why would we play an AA Full-Back at CHF and a potential star CHF at CHB? Just wondering.

Do not understand the amount of effort put into talking up teams 5 years into the future and how good teams will be......every team does it, and every team thinks they have awesome teams

West Coast should still have judd, kerr, cox, waters, etc running around in 5 years and they are the best team going around now

All teams have succession plans in place, and all would be fairly confident about their future

talking about 5 years down the track is too long, no idea which players are going to blossom, which players are going to stagnate, be injured, never make it, be traded, new blokes come out of no where etc.

For instance who at the end of 2005 would have said that at the beginning of 2007 H.Shaw and D.Swan would have stepped up into a couple of our best ball winners and users of the footy????

2012 is soooo far away that these type of threads are pointless

even trying to predict our best 22 at the halfway mark of 2007 is a tough excercise

will bucks be back??
will medhurst be in the team??
lonie get a game??
dick, toovey, cox, o'brien....will some of these blokes have demanded a spot in the 22??
didak up forward or midfield??
egan, will he be in the team??
can holland, licca, burns, buckley, obree be all played in the same team??

that is just trying to pick our best team for the middle of this year!!

forget about these 5 years away threads, we are not richmond, carlton and hawthorn!!;)

Cloke is not a star CHF and will never be a star CHF, he is the perfect CHB, in my opinion Cloke is not a natural attacking player, he has great instincts, however i think they are the markings of a defensive player. He can stop but im failing to see him start an attack. As for Brown, if i can use an example, presti was a CHF in his younger days, that doesnt mean it will transcended in the AFL. Brown is aggressive, can take very big marks and does not hesitate to play on and keep the ball moving, thats an asset in a forwardline not a backline, he is also lightning quick for his size and would impose himself more on the game at CHF. I dont think my team will be anything like what we have in 5 years, thats just what i think right now where players should be playing on potential.

Anyone wanna have a guess as to who will be coach then? Bucks? Voss? Brown? Lyon? Shaw again? ;) ...... with MM getting an extra year tacked on and with a good chance at least one team might be changing coaches at the end of this year McKenna might be leaving us. :(

Choco, Mathews back? Maybe Buckley, but will probably only be 1st or 2nd year as coach. Surely they can afford to pay Mckenna a bit to hang around another year as an option in 2009? Although a lot of people call for Malthouse to go he will be big shoes to fill.

McKenna will be our next coach unless we poach a current one. Buckley has all the time in the world to be a senior coach, I don't know why people want him to be our next coach, shades of Shaw for me.

I was referring to in 5 years time. :p Bucks and Voss (who is doing a great job with his special comments and insight) need an apprenticeship first. I think that's a given and no matter how they come across I don't think any club is willing to take anyone on these days as a senior coach unless they've served being in an assisting role somewhere.

The thing is with McKenna being a senior assistant coach is that if a job is up he's gotta go for it like he did going for the Saints gig. It's understandable and even MM says quite often he expects any senior assistant coach no matter who to strive for a head coaching role. So here's the potential problem...... Guy is set to replace MM but if MM gets the pies into the finals this year and next year do you reckon the club (Eddie) would be letting MM go? I don't think so ..... and unless MM is sick of coaching, which is highly unlikely given his career, MM might be around alot longer if he produces finals footy out of the boys.

What are the key areas we need to work on over the next 3-5 yrs?
We need a decent ruckman, Josh is good hopefully he becomes better, but i don't think is going to be an out and out genuine tap ruckman. I think Trav Cloke will(hope) become a very good key forward, just a feeling about him.

That young Scott Reed looks like he is going to be a monster, hope he can play!
