Sorry another music post, so if ya not interested p*ss off and don't reply.

Were the 80's the worst musical decade?
Synthesisers, baggy trousers , break dancing ,big hair, uuggh please! easy stomach!
Who could forget names such as Spandau Ballet, Joe Dolce, Uncanny X men, Kids In The Kitchen, and the incredibly stupidly named Wa Wa Nee, to name a few. Giz some of yer worst 80's musical moments. Mine would have to be 'Sugar Free' by the incredibly stupidly named Wa Wa Nee.

where's wally?

Did anyone happen to catch Rage last night? Played a couple of 80s Countdowns, including one episode showcasing the National Breakdancing Championships.

A sad, sad phase in the history of popular music.

Yes Mr. Ripper, caught a bit of it when i got home. Wasn't sure what i was seeing (thought i was in the middle of a very bad dream) at first (a few lagers last night) Absolutely appalling (loved the hair). Was the inspiration for this thread.

P.S. The Vics won, definetly a 'home town decision'

Thanks for that Mr Ripper..near enough to the 80's though!!!

Grease is playing on foxtel this month and it played all last month and i have watched it every single time it has been on this year... i never get sick of it but i think im driving dad and miss magpie crazy by singing all the songs all the time!!!

Ok I'm a victim of the 80's.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love.
Cutting Crew - I just died in your arms tonight.

Silly names (and by no means a reflection of their music) :
The Cockroaches
Talking Heads
Yazz
Fine Young Cannibals
And a zillion others that someone else will no doubt mention.

Ah, the 80s. It started out as a very promising decade, but by 1983 I'd lost interest.

It was tragic the way post-punk music degenerated into that new romantic crap. But amid the dross there were a few gems.

The Hoodoo Gurus were a genuinely great pop band.

The Birthday Party were at the cutting edge.

Madonna was very classy. She was to the 80s what Bowie had been to the 70s. Bowie, unfortunately, had become as boring as bat shit by the time the 80s arrived.

The Stones were still making great rock and roll, but nobody was listening to them any more.

Iggy Pop had lost much of his creative edge ... but was still one of the greatest rock performers in the world.

Oh ... and how could I forget the Violent Femmes. Their first three albums were brilliant. Then they lost the plot.

On a positive note, the 80s really was a pioneering decade for much of the synthesised computer-based music of the 90s and into the present. A lot of this stuff sounds very cheezy now, in much the same way that 50s rock 'n' roll sounded God-awful to the teenagers of the 60s. But without those developments ... and some of the crap they produced ... there could have been no Chemical Brothers, no Leftfield, no Fat Boy Slim.

So, music didn't really go to sleep in the 80s ... I did.

Agree with ya on the Hoodoo's Alf. One of our best i reckon. They were a great live act. Used to follow The Angels around town in the early to mid-eighties (saw 'em at least half a dozen times and every time they delivered, even now they still kick arse caught 'em on their 'Liveline' tour in '99)Dunno much about The Birthday Party, was that one of Nick Cave's early projects?

For Aussie bands (or bands that Australia claims as its own), what about Noiseworks.
"Take Me Back" might be packed with cliches, and it typifies the year 1987 but it's a great rock/pop song, in my opinion possibly the greatest Oz rock song ever.

Went and saw the Melbourne Storm play against Cronulla last year.

Best ever Aussie rock/pop songs: how about some of these?

To Her Door - Paul Kelly
Bittersweet - Hoodoo Gurus
Dead Heart - Midnight Oil
Message To My Girl - Split Enz
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
Standing On The Outside - Cold Chisel

What do these songs have in common? All from the 1980's. Don't judge the decade by the Uncanny X-Men. Great music will always be made, it's just a case of wading through the teeny-bop to get to it.

I thank you.

You were obviously listening to the wrong radio stations, going to the wrong clubs, or hanging around in the wrong record shops. For starters, haven't you ever heard of the Smiths? Or the Jesus and Mary Chain? How about the Go-Betweens and the Triffids? Did the C86 era completely pass you by? Have you never, ever read anything written by Matt Haynes and Clare Wadd from Sarah Records? Didn't you ever get to hear the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa"? And we all know that the Offspring are just a lite version of the Dead Kennedys.

Yep. There was plenty of shit in the 80s, but if you looked in the right places, there were gems everywhere.

I listen to music to be entertained, not to find out the meaning of life.

The 80s was an excellent era for pop music, and a reasonable one for rock too.

To me, Duran Duran has aged well as has a lot of the other New Romantic stuff, especially compared to that p!ssweak hip-hop, R&B crap that's in the charts now.

And Georgio Moroder's (Human League) songs still sound great.

BTW: Who the hell is buying that Puff Daddy/Craig David/Destiny's Child-rubbish in Australia?

Don't forget R.E.M., there Shinner's! Possibly the absolute standout of the 80's (and beyond).
