Cripps aims for midfield berth
PATRICK Cripps is on a fast track into the Carlton midfield.

Physically, the strong-bodied clearance machine is already feeling a level of comfort locking horns with his Blues' teammates this pre-season.

Instead of spending hours in the gym like many other young draftees, Cripps helped steel his body for the AFL by hauling sheep and filling grain bins on the family farm in rural Western Australia.

When the Blues recruiters arrived to talk to him in Northampton, only days before last year's draft, the 18-year-old was out harvesting the family wheat crop.

"I actually blew a tyre while my old man was having a chat with them, so he wasn't too happy," Cripps said.

Taken at pick No. 13, Cripps arrived at Visy Park at 194cm and 91kg, putting his frame already on a par with big-bodied Fremantle jet David Mundy.

If he keeps this up, he will play in the ruck in round 3.

I reckon that he will be playing in the ruck against Fyfe later on in the year :)

Just had a good read of that... apparently we still have the third oldest list around...

I read that too. But according to fanfooty.com.au (which lists each team's average age) we are not. I wonder where Clark got his data from. It is the herald sun mind you.

yeah kids don't win premierships, leave the young lists for the rebuilding teams. The best teams have fairly old first 22s but a young second 22. Quite simply from the Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney moulds. Draft well have plenty of experience and senior bodies in the 1st 22 and make sure you have the talent coming on as the older ones retire to replace them. I think we are beginning to get that going now. Nothing wrong with having an old list providing you have young quality players coming through, which we do and that you are achieving successful results which we are close to doing IMO.

Not to mention our average age should decrease dramatically once Scotland retires at the end of the year. With ? marks over Waite & Judd potentially too. Duigan gone as well.

How many games do you think he will play in 2014?? Hopefully he has an injury free preseason and can show some early form in the praccys.

Competition in the midfield lot stronger than previous years - see him realistically only getting 2 or 3 games to whet his appetite for 2015. If we end up with a few serious injuries to any of our core midfielders then you never know how many games he will play especially if he grasps his chance. Good thing is that he doesn't need 2-3 years to develop his body for a midfield role and is largely ready to go if he's good enough (looks it) and builds his tank a bit over this pre-season.

If 194cm now then surely he's our new full-forward! Must be the food he's been eating over here in Melbourne - those *Doner kebabs sure build you up quickly - by year's end he could be pushing for a ruck position!
Idiot! :thumbsu:
