If I recall most AFL publications etc (particulary the HS) gave our 2009 draft a pretty low score...

Well at AFL.COM the following article rating the 10 best first year DT players seems to contradict things.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/90294/default.aspx

Two of our new recruits are in the top 10...

7. Kane Lucas
Lucas was the third-best performing player at the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships averaging 85 points per match. Likened to a Scott Pendlebury, he averaged 21 disposals and six marks per match at the carnival and looked extremely impressive. Carlton's midfield is already brimming with talent, so the West Australian’s acquisition will add more depth to an already strong group. He will definitely get games this year, but he may not set the world on fire considering he struggled with the step up to WAFL seniors last season.

8. Marcus Davies
Davies could be a real smoky this season after impressing for Tasmania last year in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He averaged 20 disposals per match at the carnival, but collected some impressive numbers in his two games in the TAC Cup averaging 104 points per match - ranked No.1 of any draftee. He’s a ball-winning defender and considering that Nick Stevens has retired, he could be used as a running defender by Brett Ratten.

So wonder if our draft assessment should be reviewed by some media.

They should be revised because they may score well in DT?

Come on, DT is great fun to play.....but it's certainly not necessarily indicative of how good a player is. Or are you going to tell me that Daniel Jackson is a better player than Simon Black?

If the draft was re-done every single player would be taken at the same pick that they were a few months back. That a player is more likely/less likely to play than others in their first year, and therefore probably score more than someone else, doens't mean they would be taken in a different order.

Really like the look of Rahan Kerr as well. Late pick, but he has great ball skills, and has that bit of X-Factor about him that could really light up our forward line in years to come. WH has copped a fair bit of critisism on these boards, but I really think he and his team did a fantastic job at the draft table a few months ago.

Dream Team is a horrendous indicator of worth as an AFL player.

SuperCoach is marginally better as it tries to factor in what you do with the ball, but is still awful.

Conclusion: that Lucas and Davies might be OK fantasy footy rookies this year does not in any way indicate whether we drafted the right guys or not.
