I am a big fan but the time where you could baulk around an opposition player has long gone. Just get rid of the ball with the first option. Never try to outrun or run around your opponent.

I think Leigh has already passed this message on to him:o

Brad had absolutely nothing to kick to. Whole bunch of two on ones towards the middle of the ground and nothing but Melbourne towards the boundary.
Big Red should have been out near the boundary line providing an option.

Exactly.

Easy to lay the blame on the person kicking in....but where was Merrett.......or anyone else for that matter?

Absolutely no-one moved to present a target for the kick-in.

That was the point they made on the radio call of the game at the time.

The umpire called "play on" so what was he supposed to do?

Brad was hung out to dry.

Brad was hung out to dry.

Ive seen a Brad Scott & Jared Brennan thread with criticism.......... yet some have escaped.

Quite disappointing again & is really playing for his career....... I hope he shows a bit in the rest of the season, cause some rookies are going to be placed permanently on the senior list. Obviously room needs to be made.

Is the experiment running out of time?
If it comes down to Wood/Merrett which way do you go?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I think its a fair question.

Absolutely it's a fair question, and Merrett's 3 possessions have slipped under the radar (and he dropped a sitter of a mark in front of goal too).

I'm coming to realise that you can't afford to have too many project players, as this year has shown that it is important to have depth with players that are up and ready now.

I can't see Merrett in the forward line anymore, so I think his best chance of being saved is if he is looked at as a replacement for Mal Michael. It'd be interesting to hear how he's going in the ressies as a defender...

We are taught in Under 10's that your first option is usually the best. Not having a go at anybody here, but if you look at the replay, the camera from behind Brad clearly shows a Lions player 20 metres clear of his opponent near the HFF. Brad hesitated and then the chance was lost. I haven't read any other posts, so I'm hoping that Brad isn't getting singled out for our loss. I thought we were fantastic considering the relative inexperienc of the side. The old footbal adage, bad kicking is bad footbal came back to haunt us last night. You cannot miss 4 or 5 set shots from inside 40 metres and expect to beat good sides. Keep our heads up, the future is bright - the future is maroon , blue & gold!

At the moment, Merrett.

Wood rucked against Barney French, Deluca and Wayde Skipper and couldn't provide anything. Merrret did better against much better players in White/Jamar. Wood has shown nothing around the ground. Merrett was stiff not to get paid the early mark against two opponents -- might have been just the burst he needed, I reckon.

I'd like to see Strawb ruck/chf with Charmo/Pask next week again.

Bad kicking has let us down a lot lately unfortunatley.its the basics of all footy.
I was watching the hawks match yesterday, and Croad had the ball lining up, you new he was going to miss becuase of his technique.A shocker.Never made the distance even.
Also taught at Under 10's to kick with both feet.W ehave some players who can't manage that. They need a quick lesson, they get caught out sometimes by this basic skill they don't have.hey Possum.

Bad kicking has been mentioned by a couple of Posters. There where 6 set shots/running shots by us that missed the target yesterday. Melbourne missed 8. Brennan 2. Bradshaw 3 and Pask 1. All others where rushed or touched over the line.
Melbourne had Neitz 2, Yze 3, 1 for Johnstone, 1 for Green and Picket 1. We had a massive turnaround on last week and this effort was not the worst kicking at goal ever. That is the last area I would blame for last nights defeat. Melbourne missed 3 more set shots. IMO we got beaten by a more mature side late in the game for me. Our older players have still to learn the younger players styles. This takes time. crispy cremes comment about Brad Scott having no one to kick to is also moot. The one area that I think the youngsters let themselves down on is the ability to get back to position quickly or present themselves. These things will come with time. I am positive about our future.

I think Brad Scott has been a revelation in the last few weeks.

Has been composed and very smart, giving us some stability down back.

Bit harsh to pin that incident on him last night when no one wanted to run into space and provide an option.

very valid point. Merrett has had to work his a$$ of to get back in the team and he is still dropping under 10 uncontesteds in the goal square. TRY TAKING THEM OUT IN FRONT WITH YOUR HANDS!

In reply to others saying 'dont blame scott, no options'. No1 was blaming him for not hitting a man on the chest, there was no1 really to kick to. But a guy so 'experienced' should know that in defence you dont try and run around the guy on the mark (especailly if ur a past-ur-peak 'veteran'), if there are no options you bomb it long along the boundary, hope a tall can punch it out and then start again at halfway rather than in front of goal.

i think after i bagged him alot earlier in the year, he has become 'better' over the last month. But by better its really been enough to hold his spot, rather than adding anything extraordinary to the team.
Maybe harsh but its just an opinion.
