Toast A Swift Return

He looked very smooth and steady, almost like Butler. He got ran down from behind again which seems to happen every game he plays. It always makes me cringe considering his knees. Is it awareness he lacks, or does he think he can outrun his opponent? I can't pick it.

Was brave and took a bounce in horrible conditions and thus had to slow down. Also that he lacks awareness.

One of our best? He runs to unwanted space for cheap disposals. He wanders around, wont chase the opposition with the ball and looks for every opportunity to beef his stats. I couldn't think of a worst player on the field today.

I suggest you watch a replay, I thought most of Swift's possessions were in traffic handballs. Of his 23 possessions 10 were contested, hardly the work of someone looking for cheap disposals.
Ochre was right about your OP.:thumbsd:

Obviously not the game you were watching. Were you there? I was watching him position behind the play and his positioning was atrocious. And when he did have the ball he was average at best.

Swift's was one of the hardest runners on the ground today and probably could have collected another 2-3 disposals running forward had some of our half backs/midfielders opened their vision.

There was nothing wrong with his positioning and in a congested situation he really set us up a few times.

Swift's awareness is as good as anyone in the side. It's what will make him a very good player.

Looked good today. Great by hand and zippy around packs. Had a couple of bad kicks but overall I thought he played well.

Good to see swifty have a real crack today was very good and showed some encourageing signs .Not too concerned with the errors he made in the last quarter .Would be stiff to miss out next week.

I suspect we might have another bored freo-supporter in disguise, given the recent join date and the s#@t-stirring comments. I'll let you in on a secret. Look at the top left of your screen, and click on "My BigFooty." On the new screen, look at the left margin under "Settings & Options" and click on "Edit Ignore List." Then just type in the member name of anyone here you wish to ignore. Bob's your uncle.

Ummm, Tim Gossage wasn't on Swift's back until late in the last. He also said "well done Swift" a number of times, this means Swift did very well as this mongrel is a massive critic - more so then even the harshest on BF.

You Ray Charles.

Was very crisp today.

I still think we'd see a better player if he spent more time starting in the centre, one thing very noticeable live is that he plays quite a sacrificial role, was running hard all day to provide outlets across the flanks/wings, and at stoppages was minding Cassisi all day.

Am I imagining it, or does he arch into his lower back when he runs a lot more than he used to? I seem to remember him running a bit like Kerr (ie with a very straight back) and getting a lot of power through the legs and hips, which he seems to have lost a bit.

See EasternHill's post on a lesson how to actually give intelligent input.

Now i know there's something wrong with you;)

A pretty good game overall from Swift (not sure it deserves a toast though), he really got into the thick of it a few times and it just looks like something is going to happen when he has the ball, a trait of a great player. Hopefully he keeps up the progress.

Yeah, fair point. I'm in Melbourne, so forgot it was raining during the game. The TV cameras do a great job of cutting right through the rain, to the point where sometimes you don't even know it's raining. Was it raining all game long, or just on and off? I guess the 35 scoring shots is a pretty good effort really considering the bad playing conditions.

Had far more impact than Masten's been having.

Best game i've seen him play.

Needs to do something about his anorexic heroin-addicted 12year-old schoolgirl gait.

Apart from that, seemed to follow the ball, be good /clean in close and was stronger in the contest / tackling than ive seen previously.

Would persist with him but worried about his output next week.

Oh, it deserved a toast Jets. Best output for a year or so. His attack on the ball was fantastic to see, when he slid in and sent some Port player arse up and the ball spilled out to the Eagles for a goal, well I haven't seen him do that in a long time, if ever. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Was a solid contributor, but still contributed some silly turnovers.

Loved how posters on here reckon he's EXPLOSIVE.

He had a chance to run in at goal and got caught :o

But will be in the 22 next week. Just hope it doesn't cost us. ;)

He has shown an explosive few steps before. He did a few times today, but nothing like he has in the past. He tested well enough in his draft camp:

20-Metre Sprint (seconds)

1. Ashley Smith – 2.80
2. Jack Watts – 2.82
3. Stephen Hill – 2.83
4. Nicholas Naitanui – 2.86
5. Tom Swift – 2.89
6. Ryan Shoenmakers – 2.90
7. Nick Heyne – 2.91
=7. Sam Blease – 2.91
9. Luke Shuey – 2.92
=9. Taylor Hunt – 2.92
=9. Matthew DeBoer – 2.92

Shuttle Run / Beep Test (level)

1. Chris Hall – 14.6
2. Rory Sloane – 14.5
=2. Steele Sidebottom – 14.5
4. Luke Shuey – 14.4
5. Jarrad Blight – 14.3
=5. Tyson Slattery – 14.3
7. Dan Hannebery - `14.2
=7. Ian Richardson – 14.2
9. Tom Lynch – 14.1
=9. Tom Swift – 14.1

I was happy to see Swift burst forward of the pack a couple of times and get rewarded for his efforts.

Played well today and I for one am absolutely rapped he didnt get subbed.

Darling wasn't - he looked at the interchange assistant with a touch of disbelief, disdain, refusal, anger and a whole dose of you have to f*cking kidding me? when handed the red vest

Pinged the red vest into the interchange bench

Saw that.

Suck it up Jack, you're not that good just yet.

Jack was good in the first quarter but disappeared after that. We had to lose a tall due to the wet and he was the least performing.

Thought he fluctuated between handy and horrendous.

Has great hands in close, and seems to instinctively know what to do to make the play happen but looks out of touch and too slow for the pace of AFL footy. Hopefully the coaching staff either see the former and persist with him for consecutive games or don't and cut him loose now. Bringing him in for 1 or 2 games in a row once in a while isn't benefiting anyone.

And I'm told I'm a harsh critic. :p:D

Agree with that last sentence though, give him an extended run and see what he's got. :thumbsu:

I mark our young midfielders pretty harshly because I've seen the calibre of midfielders it takes to win the flag.

Aside from Shuey and to a lesser extent Scott Selwood none of our young midfielders have shown anything to date to convince me that they're anything to write home about (I'm not counting Stevens, Gaff etc. who have barely played). Ebert, Masten, Swift etc. aren't complete duds, but every club has a couple of young midfielders who appear just as good for the same amount of time in the system. Realistically we need another 1 or 2 midfielders as good as Shuey to be a contender in the coming years.

Patience

Look at Rosa as an example of how a player can improve ( IMO Ebert, Masten and Swift are all more talented)

Some players look great early in their careers yet stagnate, others are the opposite like D Swan, Boyd, Montagna ect
