I still think Ablett Sr. has/had more raw talent than Jr. I can't say who will end up the better player, though. It's too close to call.

Junior is the best midfielder since 2007.

It's still Senior comfortably. The only way Junior can try and catch him is if he continues his 07-current form for the rest of his career. Leading GC to new highs (not necessarily a premiership) will add to his CV.

For pure freakish ability and the 'high degree of difficulty' Ablett was incredible, but Leigh Mathews and Wayne Carey were, in my opinion, the best two players I've seen play.

I guess jnr is much more dedicated and a lot fitter than his old man and is a fabulous footballer,

I think senior gets undersold about freakish ability vs actually being the best player.

No other player has ever come close to the unique skillset he brought to a team. Didn't he move to permanent FF for his last several seasons and just consistently bang over 100goals a year from then on? and prior to that would regularly kick bags along with 30+ touches on a wing/HF(hello 14goals against my mob from a wing!) Freak? yes.. incredible? yes.. best player ever? yes...

The crowning moment for mine 1993 as his first season as permanent fwd 17 games for 120+ goals lol

To answer the OP, I'd pick senior ahead of junior.

Now, to digress and risk the consequences.... you make some good points.

I saw a bit of Ablett - both in the reserves at Hawthorn as my brother was around the Cats at the time and I had a friend who was good mates with Gaz. He was amazing, no doubt about it. And indeed, because he did so many freakish things so often that there almost became an expectation he should the 'easy' things more often. He was, as you pointed out, almost a victim of his own incredible standards.

My opinion is purely subjective. From the players I've seen I rate him marginally behind Mathews and Carey.

I still rate Judd of '04-'07 as better than Ablett of '07-'10.

Both are all-time greats, though.
