Now that we know the situation a full explanation is required as to the priority picks.

Which year do we use them?
In the next 3 years we will loose most of our team so do we draft as soon as possible so that we have a touch more depth even though they are latter picks or do we hang on and use them in say 4 years?
Also what does the draft depth look like in the next couple of years?
Also which father sons look like will be available and how will this effet the above.

The first time we finish outside the 8 in the next 5 years. I think in 2014 will be the best year in terms of position in the draft.

I think the club will look to rebuild.
Trade in a couple of players to have us remain a good team for a few years, but want to keep the winning culture whilst we have the likes of Bartel, Corey, Enright around.
Use them when those guys retire or 1 year away from retiring at which time I think will be our low point & get max value from the picks

Must not use now...picks 25 and 31 in a compromised draft, no thanks.

Keep for 2012/2013 we will get good value, and this will be the right time as more players will retire around then.

Someone more familiar with the priority draft picks might correct me but I think a club is bound to give the AFL twelve months notice before they can be used. If so, that would rule out the forthcoming draft.

No see here http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/103436/default.aspx

We can use them this year but as I said we'd be silly to.

As DanA said, the best year is our first year outside the 8, but the trouble is (after this year) you must nominate to use them at the start of the year, so you have to guess that you will finish outside the 8.

i'd probably be using them in the next uncompromised draft (2012) which will probably be when we start to bottom out anyway. in theory it would be nice to trade a couple of players away while they still have currency, but there's at least a dozen players that i couldn't bear to see play out their careers at other clubs

Is it really 25 and 31?

I'm not up with things this evening.

However, use them this year. (the round one pick) Gamble, and save pick 9

For example, if we fall to say 4th last on the ladder after the retirementts off the premiership group.
We could hope it's a strong draft & then go pick 4,5 & 9 in the one draft.

If we do lose another player to GWS, we could possibly end up with a further 1st rd pick.

Why you delete my pic?

you are too quick. I modded the post after reading what we get. :)

Round 1 pick is almost useless, in any year.
No reason to wait 3 years and then 3 years of development.

USE.....now

yes i'm pretty sure.

using them this year is silly.

It says that one of the picks is to be taken in the middle of the first round, regardless of where we finish on the ladder. I assume that will be a pick 9 in an uncompromised draft? But in this coming draft a pick 12 or 13? Is my reading of that correct?

No

Geelong Cats – Mid-Round One selection
Should the Geelong Cats wish to activate the selection in either the 2010 or 2011 NAB AFL Draft, during the two expansion-period Drafts, the selection would be placed at the end of Round One.

See...so it's really better to bank them for 2012 when you would actually get a mid first round selection

I find it frustrating...

because at the end of the day, they aren't and won't ever compensate for losing Ablett.

Even in the long term, if we use them in 2012 or whenever the next best position we are in, we can't trade for someone of his quality with those picks, and they certainly don't reflect his draft pick value.

But what's even most annoying for me, is that if we draft with those picks - the players won't develop in time for any 'compensation' of Ablett... because they are worthless until we're low enough on the ladder, so we have to wait a couple of years, further reducing the chances of those ever picks alleviating the problem of losing our best player.

Compensation my arse.

I've been reasonably quiet so far - but thats my little vent there.

If this was Vietnam, compensation would be 30 virgins per year for the next 10 .
It would be easier to swallow. so to speak

If we finished 4th last in 2012 or 13 for example, we would get picks 4, 5 and 12.

We are not going to finish 15th in 2012,13,14.

!!!!!

we might finish 10th in one of those years.

Use now

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but two points.

If you use your picks this year they will come at the end of round 1 after WC's PP.

If other teams also decide to use their compensation picks at the end of the first round then the picks are allocated based on ladder position at the end of the year.

So, GC 9 picks+16+1 WC PP means that your picks at best if utilised in the 2010 draft will be 27 and 28.

If Adelaide decide to use the Bock compensation pick they will be 28 and 29.
