Well any club with a half decent 1st Round pick will get a significantly more out of the transaction when offloading it now! It'll be a sellers market
Ironically it will make a lot of trades harder to happen. The bidding system has created so many trade up/down options for other clubs to open up trades. This will make it harder

The more tweaking and twerking to the draft system the closer we are to the Bosman ruling to be applied to the AFL.

AFL lives in a cocoon but IMO we are getting closer to someone testing the rules through the court system.

I can't see Collingwood or Carlton missing out on a gun and not to be resolved via litigation.

Surely this is not Swannie's doing and he has not transformed into another mediocre administrator that have graced Dill House.

AFL will realise they have overcorrected like they did with the NGA matching a few years back and relax it again after a few seasons. Nothing surer.

Too many people love the romance of F/S and once a big Vic club doesn’t get their baby boy it will erupt and they will renege. Bookmark it.

Andrew Dillon proving once again you don’t have to have a long neck to be a goose.

Someone did a table of how the new bidding system works under the new rules.

PickLowest Extra pick with one pick laterLowest Pair of Picks to Match
12 + 276 + 7
23 + 3610 + 11
34 + 4112 + 13
45 + 4414 + 15
56 + 4516 + 17
67 + 4817 + 18
78 + 4818 + 19
89 + 4820 + 21
910 + 4921 + 22
1011 + 5022 + 23

All you need is our prospects to say they don’t want to leave Brisbane. Some may want to others may not. And we give them a guarantee that we will take them.

These rules will advantage non-Victorian clubs due to flight risk.

Gunna be some good death riding opportunities with this

They don't even need to go that far. Just tank the draft combine, and tell the player to go soft in the final year. You only need to drop a few places for it to work well for us as it looks like you'll have to sell the entire club to match a pick 1 bid

Do you mean if a club has a father son or academy kid and is looking to sell the pick for a points upgrade?

If the AFL remove all discounts, so teams have to match at full value, and are only allowed to use two picks, I don't see teams getting a big points upgrade trading back.

North currently hold picks 20 (757 points) & 21 (721 points) which is enough to match a bid at pick pick 8 (1443 points) in this years draft (before all the compensation picks are handed out) and Gold Coast hold pick 13 (1080 points). If a bid comes earlier, Gold Coast are going to have to live trade a future first for a current first round pick, and hope they find a buyer.

Gold Coast could in theory match a bid at pick 4 (1962 points), if they could trade their future first for pick 18 and add it to their pick 13. But pick 3 (2178 points) is pretty much out of reach as they'd need picks 12 & 13, and I'm not sure a team holding pick 12 would be willing to trade it for a future first that has a fair chance of being worse.

To make it less open to Vic outrage - Perhaps they just have to say I'm ok with you taking me but that I will likely request a trade home after 2 years. Not many teams will risk a high draft pick on a player they know is a confirmed flight risk.

So say we get 23 for Starcevich (assuming Allen, TDK generate band 1 compo; Draper and Silvagni band 2 - Silvagni may not - and then West Coast get an end of first round pick to trade to us for Starce), with our clever maneuvering of the past we could still have a semi-decent live pick in this draft - would a player like Cody Curtain be a possibility? - seems to have dropped way back and may be a little slow and lack some athleticism now but has that big impact body already that is something different to what we have at both ends of the ground at the moment. Would also be a decent chop out in the ruck possibly with the potential rule changes in a couple of years with development and be that swingman we also don't really have. Possibly that is too many developing talls with ZZ and Lloyd but Lloyd may be more of a medium/tall defender.

Geesu and McFadyen don't seem to be mentioned even in the top 50 if we came out of the draft with Annable, Geesu, McFadyen (hybrid forward), Curtin (KPF/KPD/Ruck chop out) - that seems like a good effort all round really especially if we can get Geesu and McFadyen on the Cat B list.

Maybe draw his brother up with stories of the good times in Brissy too :D.

I think given the changes in bidding, maybe it would be good if we got a future pick as well. Cayleen Murray is looking like a top 10-20 pick and Cooper Hodge (if he picks us) would be around the 30's.

Matthew Owen is a better kid than Hodge.

One of the good posters on the draft board has his top 50’s for 2026 and 2027. Has Murray at 11 for 2026 and Bridge at 12 for 2027.

I’ve been thinking lately that Hodge might be a good long term replacement for Starcevich.
Worth a punt if he nominates us and he goes to the 30's or 40's. I think we got Jack Payne with pick 52 or something, so we definitely have a track record of turning late academy picks into good players
