Academy Rorts - The 2025 Draft Thread

Every thing is falling apart off field. Next thing you'll know, there'll be board assassinations and we'll be back in the Leppa years.

It's weird. I noticed in the Dyson Sharp interview as well, he singled out Brisbane Lions as the only club that didn't interview him. So clearly even Geelong, Collingwood and St.Kilda spoke to him in spite of knowing they are no chance of getting him.

Off field standards may be slipping quietly.

We could just say our fax broke and could not find anyone in Brisbane or Ipswich that knew how to fix it.

Twomey said on Gettable today that he thinks we'll take all Academy bids with our picks at the draft. Draft pick trades will come at the draft rather than before the blackout. And, Annable likely to be the 3rd matched bid in the top 10 after Uwland & Patterson.

So he could potentially be pick 4-6.

It really shows how drafting players is such a high stakes game of prediction and potential upside.

Nobody in their right mind would take Patterson over Annable based on the information in front of you and exposed form through the various programs.

However, that little birdie on your shoulder that 'hopes' Patterson might exponentially improve based on some pretty incredible athletic traits may now see him drafted before Annable.

I can 100% see both sides to the argument about who you might take first, but I would take Annable every day of the week despite the temptations associated with Patterson.

To me Annable is almost a guaranteed 200 gamer.

Patterson however 'could' be the next Nasiah or Judd, but he could also easily be the next Richard Tambling or Chris Yarran.

Risk vs reward I guess and such an interesting part of the process!

So if we take 3 academy kids, who are they? And who would be the fourth if we go with four?

1. Annable
2. ??
3. ??
4. ??

I’m struggling to see us draft 4 academy kids in the national draft.

There should be a kid at our second pick that would be rated higher than our academy kids.

Obviously I have no idea how they’ve performed away from the academy and vfl team, but Annable is the only kid I believe has performed at a level to be drafted.

Prindable looks like a lesser version of James Worpel.

Bridge doesn’t look like he’s improved since his U16 year.

And I’d only be comfortable taking Waller in the rookie draft.

What is our likely 2nd pick number after Annable
The club will obviously try and trade to get more points, but that 2nd pick is still likely to be a late one.
Pick 5 is 1962 points (discount 1765)
Pick 9 is 1355 points (discount 1220) I doubt Annable goes later than 9 so at present that is picks 17 & 23.

Lions Picks 17, 23, 44, 51, 59, 68, 79, 97, 115
Total 1756 points

I’ll be surprised if Annable gets past pick 6.

Pick 59 will be our 5th pick going in, and currently does not hold any points, so won’t be used in any bid matching, and I don’t believe it moves up far enough before we’re on the clock.

However, after matching Annable, it has the potential to significantly move up the draft board.

All depends on if a team bids on another of our kids before it becomes a live pick for us.

Twomey has said he believes they will be 57 kids selected in this years draft.

Is there any way to know who different teams have actually interviewed or been talking to?

It would be interesting to add a layer of transparency where each contact has to be officially lodged with the AFL and there could be a list of draftees and next to their name the clubs they have officially spoken to / been interviewed by. If a team is very selective with who they talk to players would possibly feel more prioritised etc as well - could keep some new content coming between the trade period and draft.

Not beyond what gets reported in the media regarding draft interviews.

Sheehan lists around 12 rucks/ tall forwards, so there could be plenty of options with a late pick. Be interesting to see who we take.

Even if you don’t land players you speak to during the year in the draft, I would imagine it doesn’t hurt down the track if they ever think about leaving.

Oscar Allen and Jordan Ridley are two players we were heavily interested in in their draft years and both expressed interest in joining us this offseason.

Ed Pascoe’s 2025 Phantom AFL Draft
The Lions will be hoping an Annable bid doesn’t come before pick four to avoid going into deficit, but regardless it would seem they won’t select until late in the draft. There is a chance they take a player they really rated who has fallen, and in that case may forego brining in some academy players.
Who the Lions take from their academy will also be tough and they are likely to bring back any that missed to their VFL side next year. McFadyen has improved a lot from that very program and could be taken, and although I haven’t selected Harrison Bridge here, he is still a very real option.

Thanks for the link. Just Ed Pascoe's opinion of course.
I did like McFayden when i watched the VFL.
A good pair of hands and a nice leap to go with that. More goals than points also a positive

He kicked 37 goals 23 behinds for his 19-game first VFL season.
His season average: Goals 2, Behinds 1, Disposals 11.4, Marks 4.4 and Tackles 1.5
A good effort for an 18-year-old that turned 19 in October.

Ed Pascoe's Lions Draft Selections

Pick 4 – Daniel Annable

Pick 49 – Fergus McFadyen

Pick 51 – Tyan Prindable

Category B – Isaac Waller

Rookie Upgrade – Shadeau Brain, Bruce Reville

Yeah, I didn't list the specific picks because they seem a bit off. We're meant to be drafting 3-4 players according to Twomey for 4 open main list spots once a Cat B is upgraded to make room for Murphy. Which should be Brain since he's been a Cat B rookie for 3 years, and would mean we can't take an academy pick for a Cat B spot.

The aim of this Phantom Draft is to replace every position that has opened up from each team’s 2025 list.
Brisbane Lions List balance targets

Small/General Defender

Small/General Forward

Centre Midfielder

Tall Forward

I am not sure that Ed has stuck to his stated purpose with our selections. So, we all know Annable is coming, but from there he has not addressed any of the identifed list needs. And, I'm not sure I agree with the needs list. I agree with those suggesting we need an Andrews replacement developing and another young, raw ruck.
I guess you could make an argument that McFadyen is a general forward, but at 189cm it feels like we already have enough forwards around that height. I like Prindable and would be happy enough if we draft him, but not addressing list needs, really.
My take on this is that we are letting it be known we're drafting from the Academy. So, Ed has worked with this. If we weren't I would hope we'd be thinking about how to get Thredgold if he is still there that late, or take a chance on someone like Cody Curtain with a late pick or rookie.

He has the other Cat B spot freed up by promoting Reville to the main list.
