FOR the first time there has been a three-way tie for the Harrison Medal, with Tasmanians Kade Kolodjashnij and Toby Nankervis and Queensland's Liam Dawson sharing the honour. The medal is presented to the player voted the best of the Division Two competition, with the three judged the standouts.

Dawson is not eligible for the NAB AFL Draft until next year but impressed throughout the national carnival. A mid-sized defender and AIS-AFL Academy member, the 17-year-old closes down on opponents but creates run too. Against Northern Territory on Thursday, Dawson had a game-high 24 disposals.

Dawson was also awarded the Queensland most valuable player award, with Nankervis taking home that mantle for Tasmania.

Can someone explain just how our Academy graduates can be enlisted to the cause outside the normal restraints of the Draft etc. Is it a case of, being our Academy, it's we get first dibs? Or a case of seeing we should be better informed as to available talent we might be first in, best dressed?

How are those kids we take on board counted against the Draft, assuming they are counted?

And how does the process prevent, if at all, the likes of Eddie et al getting their mitts on the best of our kids?

It is subject to the bidding system that the Father-Son rule is. Clubs can bid a draft pick on one of the Academy players. We then get the match that bid with our next highest draft pick. Or we can choose not to, in which case the bidding club secures the player.

If no club bids for an Academy player, we can take them with our last draft pick (or we not).

Just to add to this if no one bids for them in the main draft i thought we had the option to preselect them in the rookie draft if we didn't want to take them onto the main list. They then count under our extra qld rookie list allowance. Pretty sure how it works but may stand to be corrected

Nah, we have to pick main draft or rookie draft. If we pick the former and no one bids, we get them with our last national draft pick. We can't get them in the rookie draft. If we pick the latter, the player goes into the national draft as normal and if no one picks them they automatically go on to our rookie list.

Knew there was something I was missing. Cheers dlanod

Conway and Tickner would be our likely to grabs from the academy come draft time?

Archie Smith apparently in the frame too, should he choose footy over basketball.

Seems a perfect candidate for the rookie list (should he opt for footy).

In addition to TBD's Smith, there's a couple more smokeys in Freeman (KPF) and maybe Rutledge as well. Gribble seems to have fallen off the radar somewhat.

The rookie list might get a make over if enough academy kids put their hand up. Do/can they stay on in the academy if not drafted in their draft year and maybe be picked up as 19 or 20 year olds ? Being QLD development kids there might be a decent selection of them that need those extra couple of years before being draft ready.

It'll take a while IMO. We're only talking about two definite ND options (Conway, Tickner), one probable rookie (Smith), and one either or (Freeman). Most of the other kids would be rookies at best, which we could pick up through our zone selections as usual pre-rookie draft.

Cool, so even past draft age we still get first dips on them via zone selection? Was just wondering if there was an age at which we lose that first dips on them at. Being the academy pulls talent from other sports its likely most will take longer.

I would draft Bertoli-Simmons. Under the radar but I like him quite a lot. Looks like the type of guy we have been drafting of late. Mainly outside, good runner with good skills. Can go inside if he needs to. I definately have him on my radar coming into the draft.

I don't know how over-agers work with the academy. I'd assume they don't, but we still have the non-academy zone selections in the rookie draft that we alternate with the GC on.

The under 16s finished on a high with Qld having a good win against NT after losses to NSW and Tasmania. I didn't get to see any of the games and just followed along with the match reports on the AFLQ website.

In the win it sounds like it was the Lions kids that really stood up (apart from Filewood who is a Sun and kicked 8). Ben Keays got the medal and was named the best for Qld in all three games and was the best against Tasmania. By the sounds of it he played in the midfield and defense. Nate Dennis, a rookie search player (ruck) was named BOG against Tasmania and amongst the better players against NT. Adam Tipungwuiti also got named in the best a couple of the games playing through the midfield. Josh Elsmlie (sounds like a ruck/forward), Corey Wagner, Hayden Jeffries, Eric Hipwood, Josh Brown and Charlie Driffield also got mentions as having good games against NT and Blake Hartley and Ben Glover got mentions as have good games in the other two matches. So quite a few names thrown up there. Lets hope they continue to develop.

I don't know anything about these kids at this stage but I look forward to seeing them next year.

Given Qld 18's relatively poor performance as a team and individually this year its hard to see more than a couple of Qld boys getting on the Lions list (more would be a risk to list I think as would be listing on " potential potential" as it were). Don't believe in the idea of players not playing to potential in championships to "hide" players for Lions and Suns - boys know that no guarantee either will pick up any Qld boys so need to put their best form forward for all recruiters to see.

Smith in particular I see as a risk - played next to no footy, very raw. A friend at Mt Gravatt told me he chose to work rather than play reserves on Sat - sure boys need to work, but if he's really committed to improving his footy and getting drafted he needs to be playing and learning at every opportunity. If he's seen to have raw potential that's fine, but he needs to show he's he's committed, not just seeing what AFL can offer while he's weighing up his US basketball offers. Certainly if we rookie listed him couldn't afford to take any other very speculative picks.

To be honest love the other local Smith - Josh from Morningside - state 18 last year - probably felt to be a bit undersized for AFL (went to state screening last yr but not picked up) but an elite kick and really committed to footy.

Just on the afl news and it seems only freeman and smith from Queensland are the only ones invited to the draft combine. No Conway or Tickner.

It did say a further 85 players will be asked so there maybe a few more in there.

I think the 85 other players are the ones going to the state-based combines, if I remember that article rightly. Interesting that there was that much interest in Archie Smith.

Ah hah, while looking around I found this page (which may or may not be accurate):

Cain Tickner, Isaac Conway and Aden Rutledge have not been invited as they are in the Brisbane Lions Academy

Although Freeman and Smith are listed as a Lions Academy players so I think that page might just be incorrect.

First thought is it might be that being in Lions Academy has excluded them, but really when you think about it doesent make a lot of sense.

Players in Academy's in Qld subject to bidding in same way as potential father sons, and they still get invited. And in the past in compromised drafts only players who didn't get invited were ones who clubs had already committed to - from my memory (which might be wrong!) Sexton didn't go to draft camp as GC had signed him, but Jackson Allen did as he hadn't signed as yet?? And in Academy system noone can be signed till bidding takes place, so to be fair to boys should be going to show what they can do / be interviewed by other interested clubs as well. Not Likely that Lions will take all of them.

In past invitees either needed several clubs to have expressed interest (3 or more usually) or be someone AFL decide should be tested - eg last year overseas players, rookie types etc. So Archie could be there as a few clubs want to see him test, or maybe because AFL want him there to push his case and try to lure more boys from other sports... Alir Alir invited last year - hard to know which category he fell into.

The other 85 going for a single day of testing likely to include a few Qld players - did last year. Some 18's and also older NEAFL players - Clouston invited last year after great year for Redlands

Interesting that the page has been edited to read:

Cain Tickner, Tyler Cornish, Isaac Conway and Aden Rutledge have not been invited as they are in the Brisbane Lions Academy

Isn't Cornish from the Suns Academy?
