Yes, thought Cornish is a Suns Academy player

No mention in NEAFL report re invitees about Tickner or Conway not being invited for any specific reason

Let's just say SC Paige values quantity of information over quality. Been proven many times over this year, so don't rely on anything they put up that isn't corroborated elsewhere.

Recruiters talk. You can only think that we've let our feelings known about where we will potentially draft these kids and that other clubs have a fairly good idea of where they'd bid. Perhaps only a few clubs rate them around about the mark that would challenge our potential pick, not enough to earn them a combine gig but a state screening. Rutledge may not have had enough interested. Smith and Freeman are project players and a club might throw a late pick at one of them, while we would only spend a rookie list spot.

They'd also be two that recruiters would know little about, comparative to Tickner and Conway who are long term products of the system.

However draft combine is more than just physical testing. It involves full medical screening (useful if interested in Tickner given a few injuries in past), and the best opportunity for interviews by full recruiting team etc.

These boys who have been well known in the system for some time have often been tested multiple times (far too often many of them would tell you!) and everyone knows about their physical attributes and weaknesses. Often its the other parts of the combine that are more valuable for clubs, esp for the non Victorian boys who haven't had lots of prior contact with recruiters.

Yeah Paige often tends to put two and two together and get 5. She does have a few genuine contacts but nowhere near the amount she would lead you to believe.

I would draft Bertoli-Simmons. Under the radar but I like him quite a lot. Looks like the type of guy we have been drafting of late. Mainly outside, good runner with good skills. Can go inside if he needs to. I definately have him on my radar coming into the draft.

Watched the reserves on the weekend and can see why you like him Quigley

He was playing down back a fair bit and had a fair few intercept marks and rebounded quite well. Has a very quick low trajectory kick on him as well which impressed me. I didn't watch him all that closely so didn't watch him the whole game, however I did notice him a few times and was largely impressed with his work on those occassions. On more than one occasion he led his opponent to the ball, marked and played on straight away and hit a target. Something to like there I thought.

Yep he has got some class about him. If he could finish the year with a few bigger possession games it would definately help him. Disposal numbers are a detriment for him I think.

To be honest if he wanted some higher possession games he would need to go play somewhere else. The big thing I noticed on the weekend was how often the top ups would be burnt by the listed guys despite being in good positions. Talked to a few others who said its a common occurrence. If its a choice to go to a 50/50 contest for a listed player or an open top up the decision making seems to be to go to the listed option more often than not. Don't know if they deliberately don't go to them or if its just because they train with the listed guys and expect them to be in certain positions however it certainly was noticeable. This is largely the reason I noticed him when he intercepted and rebounded, because he did the work himself.

Stats from the U18 championships

Some of the main academy names (assuming HR = handball receives?)

Isaac Conway (5 matches)
102d (65k, 37h) @ 58.8% (39 contested), 40 HR, 17m, 20t
19 clearances, 12 inside 50's, 13 rebound 50's

Cain Tickner (5 matches)
63d (42k, 21h) @ 66.7% (20 contested), 23 HR, 18m, 12t
11 inside 50's, 4 goals

Archie Smith (5 matches)
29d (13k, 26h) @ 62.1% (15 contested), 6 HR, 7m, 7t
90 HO, 11 FA, 6 clearances

Jonathan Freeman (3 matches)
36d (20k, 16h) @ 77.8% (18 contested), 14m, 8t
7 inside 50's, 5 goals

Liam Dawson (5 matches)
67d (40k, 27h) @ 68.7% (23 contested), 23 HR, 19m, 11t
6 inside 50's, 8 rebound 50's

Only had the 1 HO, so I left it out. The other big HO winners for Queensland were Brennan (48) and Kristelly (23).

As disappointing (from all reports) Conway was at the championships, he still features in the top 10 for disposals and clearances for the championships.

Freeman mustn't have had any ruck time.

Conway's champs are deceptive. On baller played out of position.

AFL Premiership winner and Brisbane Lions icon Jamie Charman marks Archie Smith as club's next star
Tom Boswell
July 31, 2013

BRISBANE Lions premiership winner Jamie Charman has backed Archie Smith to make a career in the sport after less than 20 games for the club's academy team.
The young ruckman has given up a lifetime of training in basketball and a scholarship to a top American university to pursue a career in a sport he has played for less than a year.
The Mansfield resident and Mt Gravatt Vultures player has been invited to attend the 2013 National AFL Draft Combine, where players will have one of their first chances to impress in front of AFL clubs.

Nick Jackson has had a horrible run with injury and missed the championships. Hopefully he'll be fit and healthy and be able to have a better crack at it next season, where I think he could potentially go in as an over ager.

what position does he play?

Conway named in the best for Aspley again. That's now 3 times in 3 games for the Hornets. I love it when guys kick on at senior level after the champs and Conway is doing very well.

Tickner kicked 3 goals in what I think might have been a return from injury?

Conway looks more and more comfortable at senior level with each game. You could see him relish the opportunity of getting a short gallop in the midfield last week for the Lions 2's. Looks so much better in the guts. Was short lived unfortunately.

Fairly sure Tickner missed last week (lions vs vultures) through injury.

Apparently around 10 players in the U18 QLD team this year were all 17 year olds. Which means next year's 18s should be the best Division 2 side by far. As 16 yr olds this team brushed by every other side easily to win the championship. Two Lions academy stand-outs of this group are Matthew Hammlemen (tall forward/possible ruckman) and inside midfielder Darcy Cameron-Reeves. Both are Morningside players. Darcy played for the Reserves on the weekend against UWS Giants. He was involved in some good passages and has played a lot for the Ressies this year (so I've heard). Lachie Weller is another outstanding player in this group but is a Suns academy member. A 16 year old to watch out for is Ben Keays. I think someone mentioned he won the best player for QLD 16s this year. A talented, left-footed midfielder also from Morningside should get the gig in the 18s team next year.

Welcome aboard lions2016. :thumbsu:

I didn't realise DCR was only 17. He did indeed show a bit on the weekend.
