Watches as everyone collectively says "Dyson Budarick who?"

Gold Coast fans meanwhile rub their hands together.

Still, Ill take 4 of the top 5 happily enough.

is this guy an underager or something? is getting absolutely 0 mentions on any of the draftboards, none of the GC academy players are really

http://www.aflq.com.au/queensland-u16-state-academy-squad-named/

I noticed some highly rated U15 names from last year missing:
B Shelton
T Fullarton
Anyone know what happened to them?

U15 All Australians in Jack Clayton and Connor Ballenen are in however.

BJ Shelton if playing back on the Darling Downs. Needs a break from too much footy, travelling to Brisbane and school work. I presume he has stood down from rep stuff for a while.

He chose less footy. Personally, id have chosen less school work..haha

And two GWS kids and a Swan inside 14. Seems unlikely given history.

How many northern state kids have EVER been drafted top 15 in the last 15 years?

Riewoldt
Armitage
Heeney
Williams
Weller

Who am I missing? (Rooey might not even make that cutoff).

I know the academies are helping but 5 out of 15 in a year?? Doubling it?

A very valid point that you make however what has also occurred is that a if Metro were absolutely shite and won't offer much toward the top end of the draftees. Last years draft had 7 VM players taken inside the top ten and if this occurred this year then highly rated academy players would be pushed further down the order.

Jarred McVeigh (Mark just misses your cutoff).

I never twigged Hale was so high in his draft. I think Hayes might be the 1998 draft, which would miss the cutoff - but 15 years was just an arbitary number.

To some extent, it seems to be common for qld kids to be rated highly midyear before drifting out towards draft time. But I take your point about the weakness of Metro, and those spots in the draft have to be filled by someone.

Genuinely don't think club would match that if the draft were to happen tomorrow, would just go with Keays with 2nd pick. Don't get me wrong, he had a good champs but I wouldn't think too many have him that high!!!

Left footed 200cm, multiple position player with elite agility could go anywhere really - and as a Queenslander, his future development ceiling should be higher than a Victorian kid.

That being said, I can't see a bid higher than 15 for either of them. If we take the 1112pts that pick 15 has on it, and take 25% off; we're owing 826pts (around pick 22 / 23).

Depending on what happens during trade week; we may just use what we get for Aish and potentially Leuenberger to take these two players and simply use our normal 2nd rounder for a player in the draft we like.

Can't wait for the trade / draft period actually :)

A trade involving Dixon would throw a big spanner in the works though, especially if we don't finish last.

I think the Dixon deal makes or breaks Hipwood coming to the Lions. Draft someone like Schache (depending on finishing position) and trade in Dixon and I would highly doubt we would then take Hipwood as well - unless Dixon/Aish trades leaves us with some additional later picks to get Keays and Hipwood as well.

Happy to go in to slight deficit for next year to get Keays and Hipwood though IMO - just as long as we don't compromise deal for Allison next year

And that'll depend where we end up and how he develops over the next 12 months. Rolls too o_O

It doesn't really surprise me. Dyson and quite a few other boys who played consistently well enough over the three games to put themselves on the radar aren't getting the credit they deserve. It looks like before the first ball of the champs was bounced the Talent Academies decided they were only going to push for a select few to get any recognition. The same players were continuously talked up in match previews, named in the "best" and labelled "draft prospects" in report after report. Myths about how good some of them are were created and repeated over and over until they became blindly accepted as fact. One good quarter or one good mark over three entire games has got some of them being talked up as real prospects, even if they went missing or consistently displayed basic skill or decision making errors over the rest of the champs. Gone are the days when footy smarts and skills got you recognition - now its just about height, testing results and "project player" potential.

After watching Caleb Daniel and others debuting in the past couple of seasons I think this phase is over.

Caleb Daniel has a long road ahead of him to be an AFL player at 167cm, Boomer Harvey always had exceptional footy smarts, skills and an amazing turn of speed. Daniel was impressive but he ran around by himself, he will get closer attention this week. Daniel dominated at under 18s level, I don't think Dyson has done the same. He is an impressive underage footballer, I struggle to see how this will transfer into senior footy.

I agree with that, I was actually at that Bulldogs game last week and the Carlton pressure on the ball carrier last week was almost non-existent.

Daniel was good last week, no question, but with his height and associated deficiencies opposition teams will work him out pretty quickly in my view.

Unless Daniel is Boomer reincarnated, and I think that's unlikely, he probably won't have a long senior career, but I'd be happy for him to prove me wrong.

Has rolls shown anything to say he would be up there in draft calculation? From my reading/games viewed Allison was really the only prospect worth looking at for QLD next year by a country mile. He was neat, reminded me a lot of Rodgerson a few years back. Will become an excellent state level player but didn't see anything elite/potentially elite that from my understanding recruiters look for in potential draftees.
