Thinking of flying up with a mate who barracks Sydney for Swans V Cats August 16th, ANZ Stadium. Was wondering if anyone here could recommend overnight accommodation at a reasonable price that is placed ok for footy and then maybe drinks later on?

Any help much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about finding a place out near ANZ. The train service from Central is pretty good - free (with a footy ticket), run constantly, and about 20-25 mins. The city is a far better place to stay and much livelier for drinks afterwards.

Don't have any specific recommendations - but there should be a host of places in the city to cater for your budget

Yeah, go with the city, although sometimes it is overpriced and tacky. If you want a bargain, get some accomodation in Parramatta because its only a 5 minute drive along the motorway to Olympic Park. No, before anyone says, Parra is not a hole.

You can get accomodation ranging from Crowne Plaza to Formule 1 and everything in between, without the extra hundred or so dollars getting accomodation in the city brings. About 20 minutes in the train to Olympic Park station after you change from Lidcombe (or the 5 min drive), and like Costanza said, transport is included in the ticket. Not sure about drinks in Olympic Park itself, but Parramatta has the Roxy and the Albion and heeaps of others.

If you want something closer to the Stadium, the Ibis and Novotel are probably a couple of hundred metres away, but Olympic Park is pretty boring outside of game day itself.

This is my game of the season, win or loss :)

Kings Cross mate, compared to Frankston, Kings Cross will feel posh!..:thumbsu:

p.s, Mooneys still a dud....:)

The only thing to note is that the last train leaves around midnight (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so yeah your drinks would have to be at the city.

Yeah was thinking accommodation as close to Sydney as possible depending on price, don't need to be spoiled or to spend too much.

Also how does the train ticket and footy ticket to Homebush work? I'm assuming a Geelong AFL member will have entitlements (my mate is not however)?

The price of return train travel is included in your ticket. Not sure that a Geelong AFL membership will do you any good unless that gains you entry to ANZ Stadium (which I doubt). But if you buy tickets ahead of the game, just show them at the manual gates at any station and they'll let you in. If you're wearing footy gear they won't even glance at whatever you shove under their nose, in all likelihood - though that might only work if you're decked out in red and white.;)

There is a novotel out at ANZ, prices ok if you book early $150ish

The whole place is a dead though.

Thanks very much for help people. Did some searches and closest to city: Best Western Hotel Unilodge (186 Broadway, Ultimo, Sydney) seems to be reasonable at $107 twin share single beds.

Nothing to flash about the Unilodge, but if you want a good basic hotel then not a bad choice.
Also have a look at the Travelodge hotel especially one on Phillip St, which has the added advantage of being part of the NSW Leagues club, so drinks are club prices rather than over inflated pubs/night clubs.

Yeah good basic will do, don't plan on being in it for long. Checked out Travelodge Phillip St and said it's unavailable on hotels.com.au. Fair bit more expensive anyhow.
