Have a different view of how the club will approach the draft from my previous go. If our picks have gone, then plan c then d.

10. Myers/Ebert/Rioli/Motlop
27. Maric/Vezpremi/Greenwood/McGinnity
30. Grimes/Ward/Dangerfield/Farmer
38. Dawson/Salter/Westoff/Rentron
59. Petrenko/Taylor/Otten/Grimes
71. The Phantom
75. Pass

So my picks are:
10. Myers
27. Maric
30. Grimes
38. Dawson
59. Petrenko
71. The Phantom (Mr. Walker)
75. Pass

Does anyone else find the national draft just as exciting as Christmas was when you were younger?

Loving it!

to be honest this is the first real time ive been really pumped about a draft. Its very rare that we have has top draft picks and so many picks in a draft.

We have never nailed a top 10 draft pick so im hoping our pick 10 will be a gem!

cant wait for christmas and cant wait for the draft!!!

I am the complete opposite this year, usually I am fired up and can't wait this year its meh.

Sorta given two here, what i would perhaps like to see happen(within reason) and what i actually think might happen.

Hope:
10: Brad Ebert (Mid/Flanker)
27: Addam Maric (sml fwd)
30: Levi Greenwood (BP/Mid)
38: Robbie Tarrant (FF)
58: Jarhan Jackey (sml fwd)
71: Nick Salter (key fwd)
75: Taylor Walker (GUN!)

What I think might actually happen:
10: Dave Gourdis (CHF) (with Ebert, Myers and Rioli already gone)
27: Levi Greenwood (BP/Mid)
30: Marlon Motlop (FP/Mid)
38: Andy Otten (Utility)
58: Jared Petrenko (sml fwd)
71: Nick Salter (key fwd)
75: Taylor Walker (fwd)

Havn't paid too much attention to defenders because frankly there are much more pressing issues in the forward line and midfield, defence can wait a year and it is the easiest to fill in case of injuries.

I see us taking 1 KPF between picks 10 and 38 preferable Gourdis, Tarrant and Scott Simpson.

Wouldn't be suprised to see Dawson Simpson picked up any where between 30 and 58, also James Wundke, Matt Westhoff or Kepler Bradley could be from 38 onwards.

Think our first pick realistically will be out of Ebert, Myers, Rioli and Gourdis(perhaps maybe Rance as well), appart from Gourdis and Rance, none of the KPPs/Rucks interest me early.

Could see us picking up a development ruckman late, which is where Dawson Simpson comes in, if not we will rookie list one.

If Brad Ebert is not avliable at 10 which is likely.. maric would be worth pick 10

10. A.Maric
27. L.Greenwood
30. P.Veszpremi
38. M. Farmer
58. T. McNamara
71. T. Grima
75.T.Walker

do we think now that farser is nominating for the pre-season draft we'll hold a pick for that draft? there is now more reason to have a better look in that pool of talent...

I reeeeally hope we get one of myers and ebert at pick 10 and if not a slider
such as cothin, morton, palmer or someones....i want myers or ebert though realistically!

I cant wait, have to set the alarm for staurday!!!

Fraser has nominated for the ND and he has apparently said he will only go to St. Kilda.

Am I the only one that would want a genuine midfielder with pick 10?! For some reason Myers doesn't intruige me much! He is a HBF who could play on the wing but can he really become a TRUE midfielder?! Not convinced!

I would prefer if we got Ebert. I doubt Masten would slide to 10 and there are strong rumours suggesting he has a promise from the Eagles if Richmond takes Cotchin. Even if the talk of promise is bogus, I can't see Fremantle passing on a local midfielder like Masten.

The way I see it, there are 3 obstacles between us and Ebert, Melbourne, Essendon and Brisbane. It would be a minor miracle if he slides to 10 but miracles do happen :)

I agree. If the question was would we want a young Milne or Didak I'm sure the answer would be yes. Word is he will be better than Milne and imagine if we had Milne roving up forward to all our forward entries over the last few years. I don't think they will do it because they want a midfielder and they will be chastised if they let a good midfielder go but I'd love to see Maric as our 1st pick.

This is an extremely tough exercise this year because past Pick 30 it's anyone's guess really. This will be one of the most unpredictable drafts and it will make a lot of pundits look very silly (guys out at 50 in Phantoms could go 20 and vice versa). Considering the field of talent is so even after a certain point it makes this sort of thing basically impossible. With that said, I'll give it a crack. Bear in mind,

10. Alex Rance (WA - key back)
27. Sam Reid (QLD - inside mid)
30. Andy Otten (VIC - tallish utility)
38. Thomas Rockliff (VIC - small/medium forward)
58. Nick Salter (SA - medium/tall forward)
71. Jared Petrenko (SA - small forward)
75. Some country NSW boy who's been showing up at training lately :p

I'll give a summary explaining why I made each of these picks.

10 - Rance - This is a pick I can definitely see the club doing. Rance is the prototype of a modern back line player and our back line is pretty much the epitome of a modern back line. He runs the ball, has good, reliable disposal especially by hand and would slot in beautifully as a successor to Nathan Bassett. He will need to improve his dummy spits though. They're non existant.

We're always looking to improve in this area and I think a quality modern back man will be high on the clubs list - even if it's not an immediate need. It's an area that I think the club will want to stay on top of though. This isn't a pick that will excite most, but it's probably my more preferred realistic option as I don't see Ebert sliding, I'm not sold on Rioli and I don't see us taking Veszpremi that early.

Smokeys for Pick 10 are Jack Grimes and Patrick Dangerfield. Craigy would love both of these guys and the work rate they would bring to the table in a midfield/back line role. Basically the role that Doughty or Massie plays, but massive upgrades.

27 - Reid - This is based on us not going for someone like Grimes or Dangerfield with Pick 10 because Reid is a tough player who will go in hard and extract the ball from a pack. That description makes him sound just like a pure rover, but he's got a reasonably well rounded midfield game. His disposal by hand in close is the best in this draft IMO. I also rate him as having one of the best work rates as well, which will appeal to the club. He just lacks a bit of damage factor to see him go too high and his disposal by foot divides opinion. Some think his kicking is fine and some think there's a fair bit of work to do - I'm of the latter opinion.

30 - Otten - Modern utility who you could play anywhere on the ground. If he's still there at 30 then he's too good to ignore. I put him here because he's generally rated around here but I can see him being a big mover on draft day who goes earlier than expected. Brings good pace to the table and is a slick mover in traffic. Can play a third tall role at either of the ground, but his athleticism means he is also a very good outside midfielder. Not that I'm comparing him quality wise, but think of the sort of role Cameron Bruce plays, but with a defensive string to his bow.

38 - Rockliff - I've practically written an essay on this guy. Just search for his name on this board. Will be that small forward many on this board are hoping to draft early, but I don't have us taking. There are options later and I don't think it is necessary to take one so early (especially with the comparatively low strike rate of small forwards taken early in the draft).

58 - Salter - This pick purely on the speculation that we will take him as I have never seen him play. The departure of Welsh makes this move seem imminent.

71 - Petrenko - Blistering pace and can bolster those small forward stocks. Might as well use a late speculative pick on someone who brings excitement and speed to the game, especially as established that we're lacking in that department. Rockliff is a natural footballer but not a supreme athlete, but an enigmatic presence in the forward line. Petrenko is a wonderful athlete and despite the difference in athleticism having Rockliff and Petrenko late in the draft would be a wise move (if possible) IF we don't take a small forward earlier.

For the record, I considered including a ruckman, but there will be plenty on offer in the rookie draft and it's been a few years since we had an 18 year old ruckman come into the system, so now is the right time especially with this draft being deep with ruckmen.

VicCrow do you think it would be wise to take a punt on Reid if is disposal is suspect? Surely with Knights, Thompson and Gill we have enough of those?

Skillful quick footballers are a must

What about Michael and James Wundke? I think they would be good home grown prospects with late picks. Maybe even a rookie spot?

The latest buzz seems to be Nick Salter. It seems to be a given that we will pick him up but I am a little perplexed as to why. Usually when I see someones prediction for the draft and they mention Salter, there is a big void next to his name explaining why. His best game was round 14 in the local league where he kicked 5 goals against a very tired performance from Westies. He played maybe a dozen or so games in 2007, not including finals. He is a 189 cm 90kg forward . Do we really need another one of those. I think if we were to draft him he would find it hard to make it into the team.

Dont get me wrong I think Salter is a good footy player but I never would have picked him ending up on a AFL list. Maybe someone who has seen him play a little more footy than I, can inform me as to why he would be a good pick up.

Agree entirley on these last 3 posts. Just hope NC does!

Vic Crow great effort! :thumbsu:

I would personally love to get Andy Otten becuase if the information I have read on him is anywhere on the mark, he would be exactly the sort of player Craigy would like as he would give us some flexibility. He would give us someone to take over the role of Ben Hart (not saying he would be that good) but also provide more flexibility by being able to go into the midfield. He can play on talls and smalls and would give plenty of rebounds from the backline.

I would be pretty disappointed if we picked up Rance. I am NOT a fan of picking up key defenders that early especially since their strike rate is ridicilously low with first round picks. What the club needs to do is draft a safe player and the safest bet you could get is a midfielder.

I would be disappointed if we picked up Rance. I could definetly see him going to St. Kilda with a pick before ours or maybe, and thats a big maybe, to Brisbane at 8.

Well, first of all his disposal is not dramatically bad. Like I say, it divides opinion. Some people actually rate him as a fantastic kick, where I think there's something not quite there and every now and then he'll miss his target. More than anything, I think that it's a decision making issue and that it can be worked out.

To be honest, Chris Knights is a fantastic example of someone who you can pick up with question marks over his kicking only for him to turn it around. He is a much improved kick now and I wouldn't consider him to be in a crop of Crows players with questionable disposal. It's not brilliant, but it's not heart in the mouth sort of stuff.

Thommo I'll give you, but Gill plays a completely different position where a high percentage of his kicks will be at goal. I wouldn't say Gill's kicking is a reason not to get a player with suspect kicking, unless that player was also a forward.

The problem is, it's probably asking a bit too much for a skillful and quick footballer out at picks like the #27 I had Reid pinned for. Players will have their deficiencies at that stage and you won't find too many that are rated as both skillful and quick at that stage. Perhaps that makes is a more pressing need to take someone like that with #10 but I stand by my call on Rance because I think the combination of all the others make up for other areas that we need to address.

I looked to the Heavens and it was foretold...

10. Ebert - Slippery slide he will
27. Motlop - To stop the evil Port Power 1 pick later
30. Vezpremi - After a massive oversight by the dark side
38. Bradley - To thwart the Dockers 3rd choice only 2 picks later
59. Petrenko - Injury will leave him untouched
71. Smouha - AFC love their project players
75. Walker - The force is strong

Rookie#1 VB - The second coming

I then asked for this weeks winning lotto numbers and was told that I needed to put more money into the pay phone, damn psychics...

Pick 10: Ebert/Myers/Rioli Mid-fielder

Pick 27: Ward/Veszpremi/Greenwood Mid-fielder

Pick 30: Maric/Jarrhan Jacky/Motlop Crumbing forward

Pick 38: Nick Salter Tall mobile forward

Pick 57: Bradley Tall HFF

Pick 71: Petrenko Quick elusive utility

Pick 75: Taylor Walker Yessir!!

For our first 3 picks I have ranked 3 options in the order I would prefer them, not knowing which ones will be available at our pick - but happy to get any one of the 3 at that pick.

Macca the perfect result IMO

I'd go exactly the same :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Just wondering if anyone has any pics and stats on Nick Salter? Done google search without any luck

You haven't seen haim play have you ;)

No way is he ever going to be a midfielder .........IMO he's a sticky fingered forward who takes not spectacular marks but he just seems to pluck them out of players hands or just using his body.

I'd love to have him since I saw him in last years U18 grand final.

But no ....he's not a midfielder and I have huge ????on a backline role.
