Yes, PSSP selections go on the rookie list. Dangarman had already included the PSSP on his list of options, which is why I didn't bother mentioning it.

MSD selections also go on the rookie list, but they need you to have a list position available (either a rookie list vacancy, or a player on the long term injury list). Unlike the other options, the MSD requires a list vacancy to exist mid-season, which may provide justification for leaving one rookie list position vacant in the short-medium term.

I'm stating the obvious, but for the midseason draft you also have the ability to replace longterm injuries (Milera) or "retired" players (Gibbs, Stengle). Most clubs would be able to manufacture a list spot if needed and interested.

On Wingard, I haven't really kept up with the latest, but with the Hawthorn firesale, I'd happily offer him 3 years at 400, and stick him in a forward pocket / flank in front of Rowe or Murphy.

Would offer a pick in the 30s or some form of pick swaps and see if it gets it done. Not sure if it would though...

They're not giving anyone away as such, they're asking a decent price.

Yes I would be happy to get Wingard on those grounds.

Otherwise no.

You are 100% correct.

We don't need to upgrade Butts/Strachan this year. However, in the unlikely even that the AFL is actually true to its word (there's a first time for everything), and the rule reverts back to 3-years for 2023, then we'd be forced to upgrade all 3 players next year. We're better off staggering the upgrades, and given our current lack of high picks in this year's draft, it's likely that Butts and/or Strachan will be upgraded this time around.

Surely Butts - locked in 22 player. Strahan still unlikely to play

Both have been on the rookie list for 3 years, and both signed 2-year contracts this year. Both are in the same position.

The AFL has allowed clubs to keep players on the rookie list for a 4th year in 2022. But unless they're lying, which the AFL almost certainly is (it's their habitual mode of operation), the rule will revert back to 3 years for the 2023 season. Note that Keays will also hit the 3-year limit at the end of 2022, which is why we need to upgrade at least one, preferably both, of Butts & Strachan this year.

I know this is pointing out the obvious a little bit, but my understanding is that Nicks really rates ball use and we are looking to improve in this area to get the best value out of Thilthorpe, Fog etc. with our forward transition.

The last two years has focused more on structures, culture and effort, and we now need to start adding the polish. This is why Callaghan, Rachele etc. are likely to be high on our list and this is why Cook was added to the seniors late in the year, Jones got moved to maximise his assets and we recruited players like Hinge the year before. But it also sounds like the Hawks and Tigers want Callaghan really badly too and this complicates our potential to do other deals e.g. spltting picks.

My gut says we will be taking pick 4 (or higher if we can) to the Draft with Callaghan in mind, Melb's future first and our future second rounder will get Dawson over the line and we might then look to add another ball user with our current second rounder. Maybe a small forward like Cooper Murley given we tapped Chandler from Melb on the shoulder?

I have also heard that we really like Hobbs, but he obviously doesn't suit the current needs of the club as much as Callaghan does. It sounds like he is a great leader, worker and natural footballer; kind of in the mould of a Sloane or Selwood. Even though I too think that ball use and speed is a huge area of need for our mids, if we were to end up with another Sloane type I wouldn't be that unhappy.

I'd consider Callaghan/Hobbs, Dawson and Murley a win for this trade/draft period if that's how it pans out.
