Cam Mooney is the most "average" 4 X premiership player in the last 1000 years of AFL.... Surely!
Good luck to him all the same but, just saying...
He’s a 3 time Premiership player! 1999 when he didn’t get a touch, 2007 and 2009. Also played in the losing 2008 GF side. He was cooked by 2011 with James Podsiadly taking over his role.

If I remember correctly, I think the club at the start of the year offered Brad a contract on good money but for 2 years and then the offer was put on hold/retracted. Tin-foil hat thinking might be so we can see what he's offered if he exercises FA rights at the end of the year and either match or take the compo pick.

Fast forward to end of season and the Stengle linked indiscretions happened - I don't think we ended up making any contract offer to him.

If you don't want a player you offer them a low contract. If they sign you get a player for cheap, if they don't you get compo/picks and play the victim. You don't not offer a contract at all.

Does Carlton really want to be known as the destination for overpaid players....

McGovern, Williams, Saad, Martin...

To be fair all of those guys were relatively speculative picks. McGovern and Martin carried big injury worries, Williams was sort of on the hope he could play on ball, Saad was probably always overpaid.

Cerra however is the closest thing you can get to a guaranteed star at 21. If by some miracle he wanted to come here I’d be offering the house for him.

There's low contract and then there's Jarryd Lyon low contract - I remember reading we offered him something under $200k a year!

Anyhow, I think things got so toxic between club and Brad that we just took the FA compo at the end without matching so did not offer anything to Brad.

The club viewed Jarryd as excess to their needs and were trying to get him to find a club interested in taking him on board - Seems like Jarryd didn't get the memo and really wanted to stay lel.

With Brad we were rebuilding and he was someone of value coming out of contract. We were always trading him regardless of his off-field indiscretions etc. Matt is finding himself in the same position.

Didn’t he miss half his first year on the list and did substantial hammies in 2017 and 18 as well as miss the GF (can’t remember what for)
****ed if I know. Makes a better story otherwise.

Not underrated .....it was horrible this year ....ROB kicked the ball, generally under pressure, and without any thought or plan on where he was kicking it .....just terrible & impossible for players in front of him to read

So like the rest of the full time mids. Hack kicks whilst ignoring handballing to a player clear of the contest must be a coaching issue. Just hasn't sunk in with Schoey yet, but I have hope.

We all saw how this book was read last year. If we have offered 2 - you bet a side will come in offer 4 at $550K and we will be lucky to get a 3rd round compo pick for what was our best pure mid - a previous all Australian mid. Oh and its not like he is 30 years of age - he is still mid 20's.

If that happens, it just makes us look like a total laughing stock

it's not just our offer they need to beat, it's everyone else that's interested. We didn't offer Brad a cent and yet he got $600k plus bonuses. 2 is good though, perhaps other clubs do the same and a bidding war is more likely at 2, given groin surgery, than 5.

It's very possible we offered that much.

It's the go find yourself another team so we can get a compo pick spéciale - his brother got the same offer.

no he didn't. It's well reported that the offer we had on the table mid year was pulled. Going into FA period, Kelly said that we'd get all the FA offers (he didn't understand the process) and decide what to do from there. There was no contract on the table for Brad.

Hawks, bombers and Tigers are also in the mix apparently.

Good for Cerra, there's no way he should go to the death trap that is the Blues.... Hawthorn probably the best fit.
Where there is smoke there is fire

These clubs would have been ''mentioned'' as part of the negotiations with Carlton - standard manager BS

Its a brown paper bag contract for Cerra

He will be at Carlton

Wow they really wanted him gone then lmao. Not even a courtesy minimum contract.

More like they didn't know how the process unfolded in any greater detail than half the posters in here. They thought they'd be availed of offers from other clubs. What the clearly didn't understand is that once a player goes down that path the offer they see isn't an offer, it's a playing contract that's been lodged with the AFL. Players have been sold the dream and are committed by that time and even matching won't change it.

I reckon a courtesy minimum contract would be worse. No contract whilst he explores FA value with us having matching opportunity is better than Lyonsing him.

Not so sure. If lets say richmond offered 5 years at $500k..a side matt might think can still get back to finals and push for another flag and north offer $650k for 4 and he thinks no chance finals for a long time, he might have the personal ambition to forgo some money for extra contract length and the likelihood of finals. It will depend on money AND ambition

The best small forward in Eddie and even Charlie haven’t won flags so there’s evidence an elite small forward isn’t needed and mediocre small forwards like Richmond’s is all you need based on that argument.

Im also sure there have been elite mids, Key position players, flankers who haven’t won flags but mediocre ones have.

Quality of coaching and game plan, plus injuries also need to be taken into account.

Ruck is easy to isolate because there’s one maybe 2 playing in a side per game so it’s easy to come up with biased analysis.
Elite mids are a six to eight member unit.

Has there been a premiership winner without that elite midfield group?

Richmond had fantastic small forwards - all they proved was you could find them at all stages of the draft. That group of small forwards changed how the game was played with their intense forward pressure.

You only need one or two rucks. Teams with mediocre rucks often win flags. I'm not sure what about this is confusing, but it's how's how irrelevant it is to overspend on ruckmen.
