News Adelaide falling behind in Revenue

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I have said through the Trigg saga that i felt the club was too conservative in only looking at the Adelaide market instead of being more aggressive nationally.

But i was shocked when i was reading this article over a coffee this week .....and more surprised it hadn't already been discussed in the media  ......surely a real story for the ol 5AA folk?

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/th...ed-to-56-million/story-fndv7pj3-1226811508363

The article was about footy department spending ......but my interest was how poorly the Adelaide Football Club revenue has been in comparison to even Port Adelaide who gets $5M more revenue than us

The Adelaide Football Club is equal 3rd worse AFL club for revenue, equal with the Western Bulldogs .......and only beating St Kilda & North Melbourne ....WTF!

It's no excuse but aren't we only one of the clubs without club rooms and gaming revenue? That being said we are the biggest club in the state, it's quite sad.

That revenue figure needs to head north at a rate of knots. If it doesn't, people need to stand aside and let someone else have a go.

I find that article staggering.

No, Port is .......$5M a year better than us

Do Port have gaming revenue?

We used to be compared with the West Coast Eagles ......who are now $22M a year better than us ......it's pitiful and wreaks of complacency

In my Bay 13 days I used to have a running battle with D One about this. They have pokies which brought in substantial revenue. They also had Gordon Pickard kicking in millions.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not justifying our lack of revenue, it isn't good enough and a blight on how we have declined.

Our administration really does go from strength to strength. What a bunch of competent winners.

This really shouldn't come as a great surprise to anyone - part of the appeal of moving to AO was getting a "clean" stadium, where they can generate a LOT more money from the corporate boxes and advertising than they can at Footy Park (where the SANFL take all the cream). Adelaide & Port have had the worst stadium deal in the league since Vlad sorted out the Docklands mess. This should improve significantly with the move to AO.

What I found interesting was that our debt was listed as "none". Presumably this means that the Westpac Centre has now been paid off in full. It is the repayments on this which have been directly responsible for our losses in the last couple of years.

With revenue streams set to improve by several million dollars with the move to the AO, combined with the Westpac Centre being paid off, we should return fairly quickly to being one of the more profitable clubs in the competition this year.

Fingers crossed.

Though not particularly related to revenue certainly a thought provoking article in The Age today by John Pierik quoting Leigh Matthews, Greg Swann, and Brian Cook regarding the runaway spending of some of the "bigger" clubs in their football departments in recent years.

Leigh Matthews has declared the splurge in football-department spending ''a real flaw in the administration of the game'', as Carlton chief executive Greg Swann raised the possibility that maintaining 18 clubs could prove to be impractical unless there is policy change.
Matthews, the legendary coach, player and now Brisbane Lions football director believes the ''penny is dropping'' within club land, after Geelong chief executive Brian Cook told Fairfax Media on Monday that a cap on football-department spending and a luxury tax would be introduced as clubs struggled to find ''sustainable business models''.
''There is a salary cap on players and it's been completely ridiculous that the sport has allowed the non-player expenditure to explode. As we know, the rich and powerful can fund the explosion but those who can't are just bankrupting themselves just trying to keep up,'' Matthews said. ''As Brian Cook said, you have got to equalise incomes, that's part of it, but it's just a waste of time unless you somehow curb the increases.''
Collingwood and Geelong are two of the league's top spenders, with the Magpies pumping in $22.46 million last season, an increase of more than 5 per cent, and the Cats pouring in $21.4 million, up 11 per cent.

Pokie machines are scumbags. I'm glad we're not associated with them.

If it ended up a choice between being spooners or having pokies which is it? And if we couldn't compete because we didn't have the revenue, would you then complain that the club administration were shit? I would because they don't have pokies. You would because you want your cake and want to eat it too. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

The outcome is no different for the pokie players where they play, they will just go give their money to someone else. There is absolutely no point taking the high road and losing competitiveness when the outcome for the person is no different.

Changes need to be made at a legislative level to help pokie addiction; the AFC being a white knight and becoming second or third rate to other clubs over it is stupidity.

I love the hate for a story that includes the line:
*Financial report not published, would not disclose 2013 football department figures.

So we don't actually have reported figures, so the author essentially made up the amount the Crows have.

Why spoil a good story with facts?

What worries me more is the secrecy yet again. Everything is hidden at our club and we have to take Trigg etc on trust. Nearly getting to the end of my tolerance. Maybe one year at AO will be the last for me.

Are you sure that line doesn't relate to the football department spend only? All the other figures have been reported when we released our results for 2013. The question is why haven't we released our football department spend?

Yeah cause we're hiding a good news story.

Understandable given how we've been drowning in positive PR recently
