How lucky are we that we had a forward looking government at the time that enabled the AO redevelopment to occur. It is a world class facility so close to CBD.

Talk today that Tasmania is struggling to get new stadium off the ground. Key figures in Tasmania continuing to oppose development and some suggest it won’t be built and ready till 2031. If that’s the case unlikely Tassie come into comp until sometime after 2028

Queensland Gov and opposition struggling with decision to grant new stadium there Will know on March 25 what will happen

Crows and port so lucky that they have this stadium although we need to be careful we do not price out footy fans from games. Let’s hope this situation is rectified soon. $95 for reserves seat in western stand according to one caller on 5AA is prohibitively expensive

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the whole thing fall over. I have always maintained that. The state can barely afford it.

And the longer the uncertainty continues good luck attracting quality coaches, list Managers etc or even getting the Sanders and McKerchners etc to not recommit to exisiting clubs instead of waiting for this unfolding debacle. They said on radio it could be 2031 before new stadium is ready which is 4 to 5 years after they start building next year (at the earliest)

If you believe that, you’d believe in fairies in the bottom of the garden.

We all love AO, but let’s not pretend the redevelopment was for the people of SA.

It was a cynical political decision commissioned to save Port Adelaide from dying, and in the process it killed off any possibility of a brand new stadium like the one Western Australians got.

I'm probably in the minority but it never sat well with me losing a cricket ground and the sanfl being rescued by the government/tax payer.

I would have liked to have seen the sanfl have to reinvest their dividend and port have to operate on a budget that reflects their smaller supporter base. Instead everyone kept doing the same and the tax payer took the hit.

I don't disagree with the motivating factors, but you can't argue that the outcome has been a resounding success. Both sports in SA have prospered as a result, whereas the alternative would have left our city with two undersized venues competing for events. So, inadvertently, Rann, Foley and Vlad did serve the people of SA. I bet that pisses them off...

Be nice once it's finished.

Move the scoreboard to KRO, chop down a couple trees, replicate the southern stand at the northern end. The hill is great for cricket, crap for watching footy in the middle of winter.

Was a sweet deal for SACA and cricket in general - removed all their debt and only pay for upkeep for half a year.

Was a sweet deal for SANFL, able to sell off AO and get their cut from the 2 AFL playing at AO clubs forever. Why??

Was a disgraceful deal from the Labor government who were desperate to look after Port Powah.

Was a crap deal for the AFC, now we're left with the worst stadium deal in the country.

It would be hard not to prosper when given half a billion dollars. 😃 Usually this argument involves someone who is passionate about something which is not viable eg extravagant sports stadiums, arts, academics etc trying to argue that it would serve some greater interest if the government took other people's money and gave it to them either directly or indirectly. The rest is just how it's sold from a PR point of view.

Retractable hill and trees for cricket, stands for footy.

Honestly I think a lot of the outcomes have been in spite of the decisions rather than because of them.

Aussie Rules as a product is so attractive, you have to do a lot of bad to make people lose total interest. But boy haven’t the clowns running the game tried their best at that.

Port was really the stakeholder that was rescued. It was a compromise for every stakeholder, except them. They were extinct without that move.

The strange thing is the way the government down here got stared down by Gill. No stadium - no team.

Good luck stopping it now btw.

A lot of people in Hobart are either against it 100% - or for it 100% - not much in between.

Those for it argue its progress for the city, developing a site that needs development, uses a lot of funding from the Feds / AFL and will make lots of money for Hobart businesses.

Those against it say it will take money from more important issues and reward elite sport with the spoils that won’t flow down to the grass roots AND it will strip the coffers for decades to come.

Cars plastered with stickers “No Stadium” or “Yes to the stadium, Yes to the AFL team”.

I generally avoid the discussion down here - people are very set either way.

I do think it will go ahead at the new site. It will take longer - it will cost more - but it looks like it will happen.

That site will be amazing as a precinct, but expect lots and lots of protests over every aspect.

I remember being sceptical after the Fooeys concert a few months before the AFL season when it was just hell trying to get out, but the public transport I guess has a lot to do with it.

It's so much better than being stuck on West Lakes Blvd for an hour before and after the match. Has made attending games from the country exponentially easier.

Agree about the money though. Every year we hear about Marvel and MCG freezing ticket and food prices, while the SMA here is like "Oh you better believe we're upping prices again." It's becoming a costly day out.
