We all think it happens, but to see it openly admitted has got to lead to an investigation for bringing the game into disrepute doesnt it?

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/119906/default.aspx

"I had no hesitation at all in the first two years of ensuring this club was well placed for draft picks," Bailey said.

And this isnt a "Melbourne Coaching' thread... its about the specific admission of coaching for picks, and how far that ranks up the ladder for reasons to look into bringing the game into disrepute... admitting to undertaking actions which can lead to manipulated match results and ladder positions has got to rank pretty highly.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

How? There is a reward for coming last so ... WHY WOULDNT YOU COACH TO LOSE? Make no mistake EVERY coach does it. Worsfold did it last year.

NOT their fault!!! I commend tankers why? Tanking = winning. The AFL cant say anythjing because they are respoonsible for it. THERE IS A PRIZE FOR GETTING 16th/17th posi so why wouldnt teams try to get that 16th/17th position??

Wooden spoons mean jack s**t. There is no relegation and no reward AT ALL infact you are punished for finishing 9th!! so What next? investigate why a team tried to win the flag??

Never admitted to tanking once in that article. He played players in different positions because he believed it would benefit them and the club. An investigation would only find speculation - he was told to do what is the best interest of the club.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

Theres a difference between 'thinking it happens', and an open public admission though isnt there.

We all suggest different teams might have done something, but there's never been proof. We all thought West Coast might have been iffy at different points in the past few seasons, but when we needed to lose to the Dogs to get a start of first round priority pick, we fought out a win and missed it... so your Eagles tanking theory gets blown away.

But here is a club admitting that it manipulated its performances in order to get draft picks in two consecutive years.

I find that even more distastful perhaps than salary cap rorting... where you get a short term gain.

Melbourne gets a CAREER-LONG benefit of having players play for them that they shouldnt have been entitled to.

"ensuring the club was well placed for draft picks" in his first two years, right from his own mouth, doesnt spell it out for you enough??

While he didn't admit he tanked...but he alluded to it!

The AFL needs to stop tanking once an for all.......maybe it's time for them to set an example?

Try sticking to facts not baseless myth.
The AFL will do nothin because its a Victorian club.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

The AFL cant say anythjing because they are respoonsible for it.

that's it in a nutshell.

they created the beast, and ignore that it was happenning.

by making it difficult for clubs to recruit established players from other clubs, it means having first selection on the new talent coming through is of even greater importance. then they dangle the PP carrot out there..........what would you expect a poorly listed club to do?

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

Well the first thing he did at the club was let go of Travis Johnston for pick 14 so draft picks obviously were on the agenda regardless of any tanking debate.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

Not having winning has your highest priority and trying to lose are not the same thing.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

haha I go for Swan Districts... dont mess with the black ducks kids!! (clip is from the AAMI ad)

Glad you cleared that up, we were all thinking frightened ranga :p

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

Well they tanked for picks ,... but then they picked Watts ( erratically good ) over Natainuii ( Publicity machine as well as a high rucking , high leaping and tackling machine ) . That may prove to be Baileys/ Melbournes biigest mistake. I do hope Watts shows how good he could be , but ............

Regardless of what is said in the rest of the article that comment is pretty damning. No escaping the fact that positioning for better draft picks is called tanking regardless of where players were positioned on the ground for developmental purposes.

One would have to assume that this was approved by the club administration and if so then they only have themselves to blame. If the club hierarchy is willing to sacrifice the pride and heritage of the jumper for better draft picks and supposed 'player development' then the players can hardly be blamed for thinking of themselves when the going gets tough.

Melbourne should be dragged over the coals for this admission, though they probably won't, but at least this has the potential to see that rules are changed and hopefully for the Dees that a cultural shift could occur that will see a prouder, stronger club emerge.

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

Pfft good on him for admitting it! There's plenty that have done it.
Ratten, tank you very much. Woosha 2010. Malthouse 04/05 etc....

Re: Admitted Coaching for Picks - AFL Investigation?

he is the coach, if he placed player development over not making finals, big deal.

it is a big deal, IMO. it's one of the major problems with this league. the elite league of any sport is not an arena for player development, unless it's the AFL.
