Adrian Fletcher asked to retire

By Fremantle!! Unbelivable. Cameron Schwabb was just on the news saying players like Fletcher have to leave the club.
WTF??? You mean tough, hard, skillful, put in 100% all the time, natural leaders have to leave the club???

Yet another blunder by the Dockers. I cant believe they would ask him to leave...and not Mcmanus

(by the way...Cameron Schwabb has a nose that would put Bill Lawry to shame :D )

You are kidding??? Fletcher???

Is he a prick or something? That's the only thing I can think of because the Lions got rid of him too when I didn't think they should have.

Seems like a strange one. I would have thought that with a young team it's important to have a few experience players there to help lead and guide them.

And Fletcher killed us in the final round too, so I'd say he'd certainly still be an effective player, even if only coming off the bench.

What does Spidey have anything to do with this thread incidentally ?
By the Way i reckon Fletcher should retire. He's finished. Been a great player though.

That is amazing! He is one my most respected players in the league. I remember seeing him at the gym once in the off-season when he was at Geelong, and had just been traded to StKilda at the time. He was there all alone and i was very impressed by the work ethic the guy had. I could see in his eyes that he was determined and driven and it didn't surprise me one bit that he went on to be a gun at Brisbane and Freo. I really hope that he can leave footy on his own terms, rather than be forced into it by a (sorry Freo fans) crap club.

Hold it folks
This guy is near the end of his career,
Getting on in years.
Ok sure he probally had at least one year left in him.
But he is on 300 000 a year, and that is allot of money to be freed up and better spent.
He along with the retirement of Modra and probally Kickett

Is basically 1 million a year
That can be spent on the likes of Pavlich or Black.

Longterm picture here people.
Fremantle since the first 2 or so years (under neesham), havent made any trading blunders.
This rubbish that we make mistake after mistake has to stop.
Look at our trading record this year

Mcphee=35 (should have been a top 10)
Carr=One of the best taggers going around
Woods=Aweseom prospect
Bell=Top 10 midfielder in the league and one of the best leaders in the competition

That was from last year alone
Goin back further and we recieved Cook, pavlich, brown and haselby.

We will have to wait and see
Black wont be at your club next year if you cant offer a decent deal for him.
He is probally too nicer a guy for your club anyway.

Dud on the park you say
You mean brown who the pies offered 500 000 a year to come play for them.
Pavlich a center half forward all clubs would kill for
Longmuir, ruckman come forward to rival Frasher in the next 10 years.

A collingwood supporter cant really talk
Your track record since Freo's inception into the competition has been worse then them.
Your list is only looking slightly strong after 6 years of failer.
Fremantle sure is in the same position, but you dont see me calling Collingwood players duds now do you

And all these good trades that Freo has done has led fremantle to where Sabre?
Wooden Spoon.

I think its a mistake to get rid of Fletcher - especially when a bit of tough leadership is what is needed at the club. If anything you would think other players would be asked to retire before him.
He WILL be picked up by another club.

Yeah i think its a big mistake. I would love him at our club if it wasnt for his age, as we are trying to rebuild and find new young talent. But i think he would be a great fit for a team like Collingwood, they are a young team and bringing in Fletcher for a couple of years could help with a little experience. I think he would fit right in with Bucks and O'Bree.

I wouldn't be surprised in the Eagles picking up Fletcher, after all, it would free up Cousins from doing the midfield hack work, it would let Cousins run free to create, which is what he is best at.

The Coasters would love to see Fletcher under a pack feeding it out to Cousins.

Can't for the life of me figure out why Freo would be getting rid of him, they hardly have a surfeit of experience.

As I said in another thread - I wouldn't be disappointed at all if the Hawks traded at 3rd or 4th round pick for him, his experience and ball winning in the midfield for one or two years may be enough to get us a premiership.

He averaged 28 possessions in his last 10 weeks. If he is on so much money Sabre why can't Freo just offer him a smaller contract - he must know with his age he isn't worth $300,000 a year? I'm just amazed Freo didn't wait until the trading period was over before announcing this - surely he must have some currency on the market?

Hmmm ...

Well I personally think Fletch is a champion, great bloke who has server the club with distinction - HOWEVER, as was harped on all year by Benny Allan, is defensive accountability, which with Fletch's legspeed was never even an option, and as such his direct number used to have ALOT of space to work with.

Now, the club has 2 options - carry this liability, which the older he gets is only going to get worse unfortunately - or take the path they did - harsh ... no question at all, right desicion ... probably.

There are many clubs that can probably afford to cover a slower bloke like Fletch, but when we have Cook, Hasleby and Bell - then speed becomes an issue, and unfortunately one has to get squuezed out - and lets face it the others have 7-10 seasons left, so sadly Fletch has to go.

If this current administration is willing to actually make the hard descions to revamp the squad, regardless of name, stature etc - this gives me great hope for the future.
