Interesting. You'd have to think that statistically speaking the likelihood of a player coming through in the next decade who had a grandfather who played 200 SANFL games for their club would have to be relatively high.
It's a silly name for the rule. It isn't grandfathers, still fathers. I think.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Surely time for another change to the rule to make sure we don't get Ben Jarman?
Whats the progress on this kid? Is he above average?

Its funny how one of the slowest players on our list, was breathtaking to watch. Never forget once Jars was laying on the ground and kicked a goal at Footy Park. The good old days, when it was Port who???

The "Grandfather" rule is just the nickname that it was given (by the AFC) when it was announced, it's not a formally part of the name. Players aren't eligible for selection if their Grandfather played 200 SANFL games (unless your name is Ebert - and both your Father & Grandfather played 200 games).

The reason they gave it that name is because the rule change only really affected players who were active in the 1970s, players who were (mostly) far too old to have kids of draft age, they were more likely to have grandsons in the right age.

Not sure GWS have a want or need for pick 30. They need to cut back another two from their list this year i believe.
Hunt, Giles, Cameron, O'Rourke, Jacks could be gone. Plus I'm sure theyve got a few kids that didnt come on as expected that can be delisted.

GWS were allowed 50 players this year. They had 46.

Next year, they are allowed 48. They've already had 2 retirements (So 44), and Frost will be going. That fulfils their 3 mandatory changes. They don't need to do anything.

Unless its a top 10 pick and even then, draft picks beyond 10 is useless for them.
Not really,

Is this assuming that all of their players will make it?

I'm sure there will be players on their list that will bust.

They will probably use 3 picks, it just depends on how low they can get those 3 picks.

As mentioned, Gilham and Hunt retired
Frost and Jaksch apparently wanting to head home
Then possibly
Giles
O'rouke
Cameron.

I'm sure somebody will be delisted.

So will probably lose 7 or 8, also depends if they trade players in though.

So people saying Cameron has met Port now.

I'll be annoyed if they get Ryder, but I'll cry if they get JC.

What are we, every players bitch just used to bump up their contract $$$??

Anyway, time will tell.

I liked the look of brooksby. Good size, would be ok with it if we nominated a fourth rounder under the FS rule
That's not how FS bidding works. We nominate him as a FS selection. The other club then have the option of bidding for the player. If one or more teams bid, then we have to use our 1st selection after the highest bid. If nobody bids, then we get to select the player with our last "live" selection in the draft, in much the same way that we famously "drafted" Tex Walker at #76.

Funny, I was looking back at some old threads the other day that were trying to pick out young future stars ... and a lot of the names thrown up ended up being pretty top-notch.

The Gibbs father-son stuff was talked about a lot, and lots of posters mentioned that "unless they decide to change the rules" he would be coming to AFC. Lots of posters followed up with "as if they would" and "no chance of that happening" ... and look where it finished :)

Got the same feeling with your post there dayton :)

I didn't think there was a bidding process for the old NSW scholarship process. Clubs could select a NSW scholarship player with their last pick in the national draft or rookie-list them, without having to counter bids. As far as I know, there were only 3 NSW scholarship players drafted as part of a national draft: Tex, Craig Bird & Jarrod Witts. There were some others that were rookie-listed.
