Fog is a real worry. Seems to have lost his way as a forward. Always wrestles. Long way from it atm

Let’s play mcasey at chb rather than as the last tall defender. This is where he played his best football as a young boy in the under 18

Parnell must be getting close to senior selection. The jake Bowey of Adelaide we need his speed decision making and kicking ability in the ones

Strauchnie should come in when we are up against two rucks. Wasted at SANFL atm

How does Borlase look?

I see he's listed as 192cm and 100kg. So pretty solid.

That's similar in size to Heath Grundy, who was a pretty good defender of KPFs alongside Ted Richards.

So the height doesn't worry me too much IF he has the strength and smarts.

Same height as Ben Rutten, though forwards seem to be taller these days.

That's true, the King boys, Daniher, McKay have some reach.

I still think size is no substitute for being able to read the play, smart body positioning, and also team defense / getting a chop out, which should improve as we get better and more experienced.

I'm not sold on Murray.
Frampton has a nice kick, and I trust him with ball in hand, but he seems like a liability in ever other situation.
Worrell is too light at this stage, and seems more a swingman 3rd tall type.

I'm really hoping McAsey or Borlase will come on so we can lock in our two keys down back. We saw last year that we can't afford for Doedee to be our 2nd tall def, and i'm glad we haven't resorted to that yet this season.

Problem there is Borlase's best part of his game is ability to read the incoming ball and intercept, he's exceptional in that area of his game.
But his major flaw he's not a great defender one on one losing too many aerial contests getting outmarked when he should be ensuring his opponent can't outmark him and just bring the ball to ground or thump it over the boundary enabling a reset.

Personally I doubt he'll measure up as a key back at AFL level, maybe as a 3rd tall interceptor because he certainly reads the play well but his lack of pace will make that hard.

Yea, we need to keep our high picks simple. Similar to the rachelle pick. Didn’t try and create a gem out of nothing, just pick the best player
To be fair, McAsey probably was the best credentialed player at that pick.

He just hasn't come on at all.

Again the excuses for a dud first round pick. “Best credentialed” according to who? You’ve spoken with other clubs and that’s what they thought as well?
F*** off EC - best credentialed for all the obvious reasons, like the fact that he won the VicMetro MVP, that he was an All Australian at u-16 and u-18, that he kicked a bag in u-16 and then went back to be an All Australian.

We can argue that he's absolutely gone nowhere since being drafted and we can argue about whether you should take a key defender that early - but he was well credentialed at that pick.

Nice language.

So based on these credentials, he would have been a shoe in to go high with other clubs too? But I’m surprised GWS traded up and didn’t take him. Sydney overlooked him as well, why? Surely best credentialed would have been too hard to pass up.

You're wrong here mate, Fischer was easily the best credentialed Key Position Back in the draft across the entirety of his junior career.

He was the obvious choice for any team looking for a quality KPD/KPP prospect and we obviously were with Talia already showing signs of wear and tear at the time.

Trading down still enabled us to pick him and gave us the pick we took Luke Pedlar with the following year.

Gws were always taking one of Lachie Ash or Hayden Young to replace Heath Shaw.

Best credentialed key back. Best player available? Clearly not. So are you suggesting despite Hamish stating you pick quality over needs with high picks, Hamish went against his own philosophy?

You'd have to ask Hamish and list management why but I can certainly see why they went the way they did securing both the player they targeted and Pick 9 in the following year's draft as it turned out.

Pretty good deal on paper Pick 4 2019 for 2019 Pick 6 and 2020 pick 9...I think most clubs would jump at that if they thought they would still get the player they wanted in 2019.

I guess they could have chosen Dylan Stephens curently playing VFL instead the other player we were strongly linked to?
Of course that would have meant foregoing a top 10 pick in the 2020 draft.

We could still have done that deal and picked another player, so the pick swap deal is irrelevant.

If he’s not chosen the best player available at 6 then that’s on him. Throw in his other first round failings and questions have to be asked.

As for list management, maybe if they didn’t give Keath away for a packet of chips after developing him, we might not have had to go KPD at pick 6. Then they could have chosen best player.

Yeah and if your aunty had the landing gear she could be your uncle.

Keath was offered way more money and a longer term deal by the Dogs, we were never doing that at his age and with his injury history.

And Butts was emerging at the time as well.

You don't know if GWS had done that pick swap if we didn't tell them we were selecting McAsey. GWS had to match Carlton's bid at pick 9 for Green so had we selected Serong, Fremantle would have picked Green with their pick 7 as they had 7 and 8 and GWS would have went into more point deficient.

Quite possibly if the AFL brains trust hadn't given the Suns the priority pick to go with their already pick 1 Noah Anderson would have been running around in a Crows guernsey on Friday (or at least until Victoria/family beckons) because the Demons were linked with Luke Jackson a long way out from draft night.

I doubt we pass up Noah Anderson if he was available and he should have been.

And guess what? Neither do you, even with your basic football knowledge and detective skills ;)

Other clubs used pick 6 and 9 in the last 2 drafts for a KPD.

Yep. And the other 6 and 9 in those two drafts were Josh Rachele and Archie Perkins.

In fact, much to my point was that Hawthorn drafted that KPD at 6 to take over from Hartigan (rookie) and eventually Frost (rookie).

Now granted, Denver may have a good AFL career, he at least has the right athletic traits. But just because other teams have also done it, doesn't mean it was a smart use of a top 10 pick.

But we could have still done that pick swap and not picked up McAsey right? You’ve skipped over my main point with both your replies

So you’ve just skipped the main point that we could have still done that pick swap and picked a different player to McAsey?
IMO that player would have been Dylan Stephens who we were also heavily linked to in the run up to the draft.

I know it doesn't suit your agenda but that's probably the way we would have gone again IMO.

Is Dylan Stephens going great...No

Is Dylan Stephens going better than Fischer McAsey...Yes both in an AFL and VFL/SANFL sense.
