My position on this issue has been stated a number of times

Its just Port themselves can't work it out as both PAMFC and the PAFC claim the pre 97 SANFL history as their own

As for beating you, well its been tough, but the wheel will turn and if you havn't won a flag in the mean time, what's the point really?

Yeah exactly Jars, Port have finished top in the last two seasons after the minor round and for what????????????? Ohh i know to CHOKE in the finals, I reakon you Port sad sacks have missed the boat now and it will be at least another 7-8 yrrs before you will have another crack at the flag, you will have alot of retirements of the next two years probably more than what Adelaide will

We didn't "miss out" on heritage last year.

We wore our original guernesy*. The difference with us and the others is that they have all changed away from their original jumper whereas we have stayed the same.

We wear our Heritage jumper every home game and we shouldn't need to manufacture some other gimmick to feel involved. Just wear our 1991 jumper as other have said.

It would be very sad day if we wore something else.


* Technically it is slightly different with the white border around the numbers.

yes.
(I would be lucky to go to 2 Crows games a year normally, but the fact that the Crows were in the prison bars wouldn't stop me going or watching them on tv.)

Spot on, we was born in 91 out of the turmoil of 90 & that is the start of our tradition.

Quite partial to the odd licorice allsort myself.

Read the Advertiser today and I agree with John Halbert.

The SANFL state jumper should be kept for state games and not given to those who haven't earn the right and distinction of wearing it. The AFL is not a State of Origin competition.

However... also mentioned was a guernsey from the premiership winning AFC team of 1886 in the SAFA, decked out in red and black--probably similar to West Adelaide.

This would follow the same sort of path that the Dockers took when adopting the red and white jumper of the original Fremantle FC of the late 19th century.

AFTER having no throw-back jumper to wear in last year's AFL heritage round, Adelaide wants to dust down an old SANFL state team guernsey for this season's theme weekend in late July.

And while the Crows say they have every right to wear the state jumper against the Kangaroos at AAMI Stadium on July 30, the move – still to be approved by the AFL – will stir heated debate.

No disapproval will be louder than that of former state players who say the SA jumper should always be earned – and some Crows players are not worthy of wearing it, let alone capable of upholding its traditions.

Former state and Sturt captain John Halbert – who emphasises he is "very proud of my state jumper" which he wore with honour 17 times – says he is not "very keen" to see an AFL club side wearing an SANFL state guernsey.

"The Adelaide football team and the SA state side are two seperate identities – and they should not be confused," says Halbert, the 1961 Magarey Medallist.

Halbert wonders how Port Adelaide-based players worthy of wearing the SA jumper in Origin football, if this still existed, would feel in seeing Crows players adorning a jumper denied to them by the AFL's focus on club football ahead of state games.

Fellow Magarey Medallist and former West Torrens captain Bob Hank, who represented SA 27 times, also says the state jumper cannot be handed down to a club side. "Adelaide's request (to wear a state jumper) is really stretching it a bit far," he said.

"It would lower the standing of the state jumper."

Adelaide says the state jumper – whether it be the chocolate-and-brown version worn early in the 20th century – is appropriate for the Crows.

"It reflects we are born from the SANFL, from the SANFL clubs," says Adelaide general manager of commercial operations Phil Harper. "We are a conglomeration of the SANFL clubs. We're not technically a state side but we need to recognise that we come from the SANFL."

It is doubtful the Crows would adopt the 19th century state jumper that had the SANFL's representative team wear black-and-white stripes, a uniform later claimed by Collingwood.

And it is intriguing that the Crows have not revived the red-and-black jumper of the original Adelaide Football Club which won the SA premiership in 1886.

This would follow the path taken by Fremantle, which joined the AFL in 1995 with no direct link to a WAFL club. The Dockers last year adopted for heritage week a red-and-white jumper worn by the original Fremantle Football Club that set the roots of WA football in the late 1800s.

SANFL president Rod Payze last night said Adelaide's plan had still to reach the SA Football Commission, the highest authority in SA football and guardians of the state jumper and the two SA-based AFL licences.

He would not comment on Adelaide's rights to the state jumper before reading its proposal at the commission table.

Port will not again wear the black-and-white jumper of its SANFL past when it plays Essendon at Telstra Dome in heritage week. The Power is working through its 19th century wardrobe to find the guernsey it will revive this season.

What about those guys that now wear the State jumper when representing the SANFL against the VFL and the WAFL. Some of those players are nowhere near as good as most Crows players eg Nigel Fiegert etc etc.

I don't think we should wear the State gurnsey either but its not a question fo the players not being good enoug to weat it

I didn't say that they did have a right to wear the gurnsey

I am just saying the team was invented to represent the State in the AFL.

But the State team is a completely different entity and agree we shouldn't wear it.

Doesn't mean there isn't a link though.

You can't use a South Australia guernsey - not all your players have earnt that honour.

But the current Crows guernsey represents The Rest Of South Australia perfectly; its colours cover all the SANFL teams except Port Adelaide - the very reason you were created in the first place. That is your heritage

A club that we share absolutely no tangible linkage with whatsoever except for the name. If we do adopt that strip then the board should be shot for rubber-stamping the idea.

We are the Adelaide Football Club... est 1990.

Our original guernsey is the tri-colour strip, and we should be wearing that. That is our heritage.

- No mish-mash SANFL crap that's representative of the 9, (or 10) clubs.

- No state of origin strip. Half the side hail from outside SA and as such, it isn't appropriate for them to wear the state guernsey.

- No red and black 1800's crap. The AFC of the 1800's bears no significance whatsoever to the AFC established 1990, bar the name... the tradition, history, results, of that club has nothing to do with us.

We first competed as a club in the navy, red and gold hoops, and that's what we should be wearing in any 'heritage' games. In my opinion, anything else is not true to our 'heritage'.

I agree with Jars458.

The Crows were formed from the 10 SANFL clubs. That is their heritage.

The state gurnsey is the only gurnsey that represents the 10 SANFL clubs.

Therefore, it is a gurnsey that can correctly be linked with the heritage of the AFC.

The only two viable options for the Crows on heritage week are the 1991 gurnsey or the state gurnsey.

It just should never be the State guernsey!!

That guernsey was originally in effect a reward to the elite playing in the SANFL competition for their performances in that year. With no disrespect to Nathan Bock he and several others in our side would never have earned such a guernsey at this stage of his career.

Later on it virtually became a reward to the best South Australian footballers irrespective of which team or State they were playing in, when the selection basis became State of Origin.

How the hell then does the State guernsey relate to the Crows?? It doesn't of course, and neither should it have to either. IMO it would be an insult to those past players who earned the right to wear that jumper if the Crows were to wear that as their heritage guernsey.

1991 is when the Adelaide Crows played their first game, and that is the guernsey which should be our heritage guernsey. That and no other!!
