AFL 2012 Team Analysis: WEIGHT

Welcome to my team analysis for the upcoming 2012 season. In this series I will be analysing each team´s rank within the AFL in terms of weight, height, age and games played. I will also go a step further to break down the analysis between defense, midfield, attack and ruck.

So lets kick off the season by going in depth in to each team´s weight analysis. You can have a look at the full sizes pictures at my blog.

pretty interesting stuff here, good to see the tigers putting some weight on, more contested footy this year for us! surprised to see big beef weighing in more then the mullet

Means slightly less than "average height", ie slightly less than flip all.
Should be on the "lists" board anyway IMHO.

Nice graphs for 2011, pity you didn't use current data though looking at the fact you have Lake at last years weight of 104 when he is down to 99, Minson at 106 when he is up to 109 and Jones at 94 up to 98 amoungst others

A few pies and Lake will be up to 104 again! Data changes all the time so you have to draw a line somewhere.

Club numbers can be extremely flexible. Anyone remember that year when Eade said the Dogs had put on an average of 6kg or something equally ludicrous??

Seriously... anyone who actually believes Shane Edwards is the same weight as Daniel Kerr...

A thread like this you think would be done using data for start of 2012 season instead of using data from start of 2011 season, your graphs are useless as are 12 months out of date, plenty changes in 12 months. Thread fail.

Doesn't seem to really compare to success. Weight doesn't equal strength and the height and weight statistics provided should be taken with a grain of salt. Geelong seem to come in around the half way mark suggesting maybe they have a good balance. Also this stat counts players who are not getting a game or are not going to get a game or many games.

Is Josh Gibson really the heaviest defender at Hawthorn? I'm dubious about that - I know Schoenmakers is listed at 86 kg on the website but surely that's low for a 196cm KPP who's been in the system for 3 years.

These figures of aften swayed by "fringe" players or kids, who are on the list but will realalistically have minimal impact in games/finals.

Includes Griffiths Graham & Wright for Tigers (as one example).

Tim McImtyre at Adelaide is 176cm and 98kg. Built like a brick shithouse. Plays more as a small forward in our NB cup games, but did do some midfield work.

Is on Rookie list, Callinan elevated before him.

Yeah figured that it did, just not sure if it should.


These figures for the top 25 would be best for looking at a clubs CURRENT position, while a whole list may be best for looking at their FUTURE prospects.

I checked the "heaviest forwards" chart and noted Tom Hawkins doesn't get a mention. He is 104 kg. Who else is missing? The data is misleading if incomplete.

This is so true. We have 2 bona fide ruckmen in Goldy and Hamish McIntosh - Both over 100 kegs. Petrie can and sometimes will pinch hit and he is over 100 but our average is 95kgs???????

Which string bean who is obviously on the rookie list and won't play this year killed the avg?

Interesting info but doesn't help once the ball is bounced!

At least with average height you are that height or not. Average weight, if one club is taller then their weight should be higher. And of course if team X weighs 90kg on average with 5% body fat, I'd rather that my team then one weighing 92kg with 10% body fat.

The other measures have some relevance, but unless the teams start posting body fat or skin fold measurements publicly it's way too subjective.

There's a difference between lean muscle mass vs. pure body fat when it comes to weight.

Height should also be taken into account.

For all we know, Richmond could be fat as fat ass.
