AFL 2012 Team Analysis: WEIGHT

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Sorry if you covered this, but are these values for the teams best 22, top 25, top 30 or whole list ???

These figures of aften swayed by "fringe" players or kids, who are on the list but will realalistically have minimal impact in games/finals.
Coryne,

These figures are for the whole list, rookies included and players who havent played a game. As every team analysed has these "rookie" players then the balance between each team is equal.

I did an exercise to take out the "rookies" and the results did not change alot.

Yeah seems a bit misleading seeing Pavlich named as a midfielder, our forwards are Pavlich, Bradley, Anthony, Mayne, DeBoer, Mellington/Ballantyne

Midfield is: Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe, Hill, Crowley, Broughton/Ballantyne

Backs: McPharlin, Dawson, Johnson/Grover, McPhee, Ibbotson, Duffield

Rucks: Sandilands + Clarke/Griffin

McIntyre is not 98kg, he's listed at 79kg. Dangerfield is the crows highest mid at 91kg. How he weighs 6kg more than Thompson I do not know.

It would be interesting to see the average weights of each teams starting 22, rather than the whole squad.

I disagree, it's a very interesting op.
Not if it's based on a mix of 2011 numbers, 2012 numbers, and mistakes.

Supposedly the "top 4" heaviest groups of midfielders all missed finals last year, and Hawthorn/Carlton/WCE are towards the lower end.
Poppycock IMHO.

Tigs & Dogs might have drafted some heavier types doesn't mean they'll play, let alone that they're any good.
You'd back the likes of Mitchell/Sewell/Judd/Murphy/Kerr/Priddis all day long.

The cynic in me says this thread was only created so the OP could highlight Richmond's heaviness and implied muscle. These stats are never accurate though so I wouldn't have bothered.

Welcome to my team analysis for the upcoming 2012 season. In this series I will be analysing each team´s rank within the AFL in terms of weight, height, age and games played. I will also go a step further to break down the analysis between defense, midfield, attack and ruck.

So lets kick off the season by going in depth in to each team´s weight analysis. You can have a look at the full sizes pictures at my blog.

...

Did you make those charts yourself? If so they're rather shocking, and I'm not simply saying that to troll/bag you. Feel free to PM me if you would like some tips.

I don't have time to review the actual numbers at the moment, but will do so during my lunch break.

Where's Taylor Walker in that forwards analysis? He's 100kg.

Lots and lots of inaccuracies. Lock the thread imo.

No surprise to see Cloke as the heaviest forward.

Guy is a man mountain.

Surprised Geelong isn't higher. They're obviously much 'harder' than most then.

Maybe Geelong have a shorter average height?
Say a Collingwood player is 190cm and 86kg and a Geelong player is 181cm and 85kg the shorter player is going to be stronger than the 190cm player despite the statistics.

For those questioning the data... The OP clearly stated it was sourced from FootyWire, so any queries about data accuracy lies with FW, not with the OP.

FW may have some old/inaccurate values (especially in height and weight measures as I believe these are primarily loaded when a player is added to FW or perhaps changes teams)... However as the OP expands into other analysis measures (as they've suggested they will do) than FW is still the overall best source of data that is publicly accessible (Champion Data would be the best source but IIRC isn't publicly available).

Cheers

FightingFury... I finally got around to replying to your PM.

Here is a sample that I quickly knocked up in about an hour (data collecting from FootyWire, data cleansing, chart creation etc).
