Hello. Perhaps you've been here before. Perhaps you haven't. If you haven't, here's what you need to know: these threads have a long history of being dumpster fires. For that reason, we take a much stricter approach to moderation than we otherwise do.

What is okay:
  • Heated debate / disagreement
  • Criticising the game / developers
  • Praising the game / developers
  • General shit talk

What is not okay:
  • Personal attacks / name calling / abuse / criticising the person rather than the argument / game
  • Repeating the same thing over and over and over and over (and over) to push an agenda or attempt to dominate the thread

We will not hesitate to permanently thread ban you if you are taking too much of our time.

The other thing I’d like to see is parts of the gameplay sped up a little. It felt a bit slow at times and even at a PES-level speed where say, a wing chasedown was way slower than should be and not as excitable. Not comparing, but Evo 2 nailed the movement/command speeds for me.

Evo 1 was great as it had multiple speeds to choose from in the options that helped make overall speed and thus scoring more like real life.

In Evo 2 other than adjusting players stats, I literally used a frame rate limiter to slow the gameplay down. Otherwise it felt line watching a match in fast forward VHS style.

AFL 23 was similar, everything just accelerated far too fast. Add the teleporting tackles and it wasn't fun.... until I got used to predicting my next move 1-2 steps before executing them (re: when doing the kick in from full back, pre determining the direction then whether I'd kick or handball in the next play before doing it).

I'm also confused as to why only 4 and a half months ago, they tweeted that 23 was getting an updated 2025 roster. Are they still doing that? That doesn't make sense if they're releasing a new AFL game. Or, did they change plans, and decide to throw together AFL 26 really quickly?

Yep hence why I think it is a pretty late decision, copy paste job. With added my career as the ‘improvements’ to justify bringing out a new game and charging everyone another $100

Truly a shovelware dev, pumping out iterative broken releases and surviving purely out of licensing agreements.

I thought 2023 was an outlier year but they will release cricket, union, afl and league this year. Just not sustainable if they want to release decent games.

I'll double check the settings tonight but from memory they didn't do the job. It wasn't the same as Evo 1 - hence why I opted to use a frame rate limiter to get a more desired result.
I set the running speed to 0. I wanted it lower than that, but 0 gave the players a more "weighted" running speed.

Rugby 25 actually looks and plays like a PS2 game. I’ve never been one to say these AFL games look like old PlayStation games but geez they must have whipped Rugby 25 up on Windows 98

Weren't there rumours not that long ago that they were re-releasing 23 as some sort of Pro Team Edition (couldn't be a GOTY Edition lol)?

Perhaps this is where those rumours came from, and that's all this is. 23 but with 25 lists and career mode tacked on (which, if Ross can be believed (lol) was close to coming out for 23 anyway).

More than a rumour, it is on the classification website ’AFL23 + Proteam bundle’ classified in January.

AFL26 classified 1 month later…

Guys we've already had it confirmed by an independent poster on here that it's not just 23 with lipstick slapped on it

So we can be on the lookout for biased reviews and “testers”, who were the clear shills last time round?
I remember distinctly there were a few who got early versions and piled on the praise, only to turn around and claim that they must have tested a “different version” - one that we never actually got.

idk what the deal was with twistie3 and afl23. It felt like he was all buddy buddy with Ross before the game came out (maybe a bit of $$ to say the game is good or whatever). But now he actually says the game is bad and points out flaws. Maybe the deal with Ross expired...

If they fixed up a few of the mechanics/bugs in AFL evo2, and fixed the graphics, I'd almost guarantee that'd be better than whatever AFL26 is. Not sure how they allocate the licenses but they should've left it with wicked witch for AFL evo3.

I think big ant must be on a really tight leash license agreements. I have played their cricket games, and you can't change things about the licensed players. Major players you can't change anything but their ratings, some of the lesser players you can give them different bats etc.

In AFL23, I genuinely think there might be 5 fully scanned/licensed players who didn't have white boots. In evo 2 you could change all of their accessories even if they had a face scan. Players can't even have changing sleeve lengths for weather in AFL23. They could easily put a temperature thing into the game, and under a certain temp players will wear a longsleeve if they have enabled. It's clearly too much for the devs to update boot colours and stuff like that, so let the nerds like me who find that more immersive to do it.

Can anyone remember what the story was with release day? They accidentally updated the wrong thing and then couldn't reverse to the version of the game that supposedly worked?
I think it was a tweet from Big Ant, the day or so after it was released. Later, after the game released, there was some strange revisionism about the beta version being amazing, when there was a lot of discussion as the beta version gameplay footage came out about how it looked bugged/glitched, Ross claimed that was because it was an earlier version of the game, and that the released version was suppose to be far more ahead in development. I believe what really happened, the game wasn't QA tested properly and they rushed it out as shovelware, because they ended up just developing it even after release, it wasn't finished at all.

From memory, the story was that the beta everyone played at the launch event and the streamers used was absolutely destroyed by the day 1 patch. Then it took them months to backtrack and improve on it

Yeah it was another game (tennis maybe) they claimed the wrong version was released, AFL23 a patch somehow destroyed it.
