Roast AFL admits umps wrong

The umps just have to let more go. Often little things are paid in close that are technically correct but 9/10 they don't see it so it gets let go. Let those ones go and I think people will be more content with it.

I think that’s the problem, they are so inconsistent at paying the inconsequential ones. They pay less in non contact sports like the NBA. They should focus on the ones that are obvious infringements and not worry about the ticky touchwood ones.

But even then they miss the obvious ones. How they missed puopolo’s unrealistic attempt is beyond me. The entire ground saw it. Even the commentators mentioned it. So it’s probably a mix of incompetence and too many shit rules to police.

Yes but by only playing 40 odd free's they didn't influence the game by playing soft ones. As you say, so many rules in our game. Mitchell also copped a fair wack around the ears but wasn't given. I don't mind them missing a few, but when they influence games like they did against Adelaide and Carlton, yesterday was fine by me.

Umpires will always screw both teams.

When you’re winning it’s easy to overlook, but when it’s tight you alway feel like they’re against your team.

I mean, imagine how Port supporters felt losing a final due to a Selwood shrug.

Everyone gets screwed.

Umpires can stumble their way through our matches like they do with all teams, it won’t stop us from winning premierships. (Yep, everything links back to us being premiers).

Always good to vent though, so continue on.

Whenever I get frustrated I just remind myself on average they’re equally bad towards everyone.

Felt like they screwed us all year in 2017 when we were 18th in free kicks differential, but it swung our way in the Grand Final. It averages out.

Swung our way in the GF because we beat the crows in contested possessions. It makes sense the more you’re winning it the more free kicks you get. We didn’t get any special rub of the green or treatment from the umps GF day. There were non calls both ways on the day.

I do agree pro sides don’t let the umps be a factor. Which is what we did last year even though there were some howlers that influenced games. But doesn’t mean the standard isn’t great. Nor why a side that is usually pretty good at contested footy is last on free kicks. Seems to be a trend and I don’t know why that is.

why the actual **** can't boundary umpires make decisions? Half of the trash we get served up is directly due to umpire being inside the play and the play facing the boundary and the poor umpire not having any clue what's going on. Just change your numbers of umpires and shift it around so EVERY umpire (bar goal) is the same bloke - a field umpire.

although it is also the grey areas in the rules that contribute to the trite we and other clubs see week in week out I feel like more often than not umpires make bad calls because they don't have the best view.

What have you got now... 3 field, 4 boundary.

What happens if you have 5 field and 2 "boundary". Where the field umpires spread around the ground to envelop the boundaries and then you have one "boundary umpire" down each length of the field to primarily assist in ensuring the boundary calls are correct etc. (Like a linesman in soccer I guess)

This wouldn't entail 5 blokes running around like our 3 do now, but rather have 5 blokes covering the duties of the 3 central and 2 boundary umpires.

Maybe I'm crazy?

You want Boundary umpires to add to the confusion that is umpiring LOL

Why not give the runners a whistle as well while your at it!

Bring this device into service to use on umpires after a Richmond game to assist them in future correct decision making.

Not sure you read the entire post, but I'm pretty sure the bulk of the idea involved exchanging boundary umpires for field umpires and changing the way in which the umpires set up and officiate around the contest?

whats cost us are the ones NOT paid, all mentioned previously , like we re playing to a diff set of rules

Very good post! Would like more than once if I could.

Reading this thread makes me wonder if we have some flat-earth types lingering....

Umpiring is contentious in virtually every sport over the globe. Questionable decisions are made in Olympics, World Cups (any sport with a world cup), Commonwealth games, golf, tennis..... The best teams and the best individuals find a way. Like we did... in 2017.

After round 3 we have the top 3 umpires pets and villains

PETS:
Collingwood +23
Brisbane +20
Sydney +13

VILLAINS:
GWS -24
Richmond -20
St Kilda -17

Not that surprised.... we have been consistently second to the ball and subsequently attempting many tackles.

If you want to find out who is really being screwed find out the number of incorrect or unwarranted free kicks for and against. Not surprisingly you will probably find those stats harder to come across. The umpiring department will have them but I doubt they'll give them to you.

Yep, but they don’t pay them all because they can’t and will never see them all, so they need to stop paying the touchy ones altogether. One of my favourites is a one on one contest where both kind of have hold of each other. Instead of calling play on they’ll ping the one that’s holding a little bit more.

Two answers.
Change the format so there are eyes on outside of ground rather than all central or cut back on umps and have one and just whatever is seen is seen. Less inconsistency due to interpretation and less whistles

The umpires make wrong decisions both ways and I'm fine with that. I throw my arms up but I don't yell out abuse or get too wound up.

What does concern me is when I see one umpire making consistently poor decisions.

We've had Leigh Fisher in rounds 1 and 3 and both times I think he's umpired far too litigiously.

I'd be very interested to see a stats of goals scored for us and by the opposition based in those two games on free kicks or 50s paid by Leigh Fisher.

Agree... +1

Umpires are going to **** up it's just what happens, but what gets fans raging is the interpretations of a rule for one team and not the other,
example the protected area rule.

In round 1 plenty of times blues were encroaching the protected area and the umpires ignored it or told them to move away, tigers encroached and blues players are getting police escorts to the goalsquare.

It's all about consistency, if you pay a free to one team then you need to pay a free to the other team for the exact same thing.

Yep, and in every other bloody game that weekend it was happening and the Umpires weren't pinging anyone for it. There was obviously a meeting after our match.
